Fourteen Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been detained by the Sri Lankan Navy after their vessel allegedly crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). The fishermen, who departed from Tharangambadi in Mayiladuthurai district on Saturday evening aboard a mechanized boat registered in Vanagiri, encountered a mechanical issue mid-sea. This malfunction is believed to have caused their vessel to drift into Sri Lankan waters near Point Pedro. Sri Lankan naval patrols intercepted the boat early Monday morning, arresting the 14 crew members and seizing their vessel. They were subsequently taken to the Kankesanthurai Naval Base for questioning. Fishermen’s associations have voiced serious concerns and are urging both governments for the swift release of the detained individuals. They emphasize that the boundary crossing was unintentional, a result of technical difficulties. Diplomatic channels are being engaged to resolve the situation and secure the fishermen’s return. This incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by fishermen operating in the Palk Strait and the ongoing need for a lasting solution to maritime boundary disputes. The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department has notified the Indian High Commission in Colombo, and efforts are underway to coordinate with Sri Lankan authorities for the fishermen’s release. The state government plans to submit a report to the Union Ministry of External Affairs, seeking intervention.
