Colombo witnessed a landmark moment in India-Sri Lanka relations as New Delhi transferred two state-of-the-art BHISM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita and Maitri) medical units to its island neighbor. This gesture, rooted in the Aarogya Maitri program, equips Sri Lanka with mobile hospitals capable of managing 200 emergencies at once, complete with drugs and minor surgery kits for rapid response.
Complementing the aid, India will supply 50,000 9mm rounds to the Sri Lankan Navy, bolstering naval interoperability. INS Nirvikhak, a specialized diving and rescue ship, ferried the cubes after arriving on April 21 for the ongoing IN-SLN Diving Exercise, the fourth of its kind, concluding on April 27.
The drills have showcased remarkable synergy, with divers executing complex underwater mixed-gas operations with precision. Off-duty, the teams bonded over volleyball and a beach cleanup, emphasizing shared values of discipline and sustainability.
As per Indian Navy insights, these engagements embody the SAGAR doctrine, promoting security, growth, and holistic advancement across the Indian Ocean. This aid package not only addresses immediate humanitarian needs but also fortifies long-term strategic alliances, highlighting India’s proactive neighborhood policy amid regional challenges.
