CPJ Demands Bangladesh Free Journalists in Politically Charged Cases

In a strongly worded appeal from Washington, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has demanded that Bangladesh’s interim government withdraw charges against four prominent journalists languishing in jail without trial. The cases against Farzana Rupa, Shakoil Ahmed, Mojammel Haq Babu, and Shyamal Dutta smack of political revenge, CPJ contends, with zero chargesheets filed after 18 months of detention on unsubstantiated murder allegations.

Addressing Minister Mohammad Asaduzzaman directly, CPJ detailed how these arrests under Muhammad Yunus’s prior interim rule targeted journalists for their reporting and perceived political leanings. Extensive document reviews, family testimonies, and legal scrutiny by international experts found no basis for the claims. “This pattern of fabricating cases undermines your commitment to fair governance,” the letter asserts.

Health crises compound the injustice. Rupa endured isolation in a high-security cell for death-row inmates. Dutta’s stroke went unreported to kin, exacerbating his cardiac and apnea conditions. Babu’s post-arrest cancer diagnosis and surgery have gone without vital monitoring, endangering his life.

CPJ calls for outright dismissal of charges, immediate release, and safeguards for the journalists’ well-being before any decisions. With elections looming, this moment tests Bangladesh’s pledge to press freedom. Releasing these reporters isn’t just justice—it’s a signal to the world that Dhaka prioritizes human rights over political vendettas, bolstering democratic credentials ahead of the polls.
