  • JD(U) call for Agnipath review correct, scheme withdrawal long overdue: Sanjay Singh

New Delhi: AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Thursday said the JD(U)’s demand for review of Agnipath scheme is “100 per cent correct” and stressed that the scheme should have been withdrawn earlier. Earlier in the day, JD(U) leader K C Tyagi told reporters here that the party has demanded a review of the Agnipath scheme, and will “pursue” the caste census issue. Speaking to PTI Videos, Singh said, “Agniveer is betrayal with Mother India and the Army. The prime minister should have withdrawn it earlier.” “Earlier a jawan was trained for a year but under this scheme (Agnipath), you reduced the training period to six months. Every youth is ready to sacrifice his or her life for the country. But you are weakening the army. This demand from JDU is 100 per cent correct,” the AAP leader added. In June 2022, the government rolled out the Agnipath recruitment scheme for short-term induction of personnel with an aim to bring down the age profile of the three armed services. • French rapper MHD gets 12 years in prison for youth’s murder

    By AFP

PARIS: French rapper MHD was sentenced Saturday to 12 years in prison for the 2018 murder of a young man in Paris who was rammed with a car before being set upon by a mob and stabbed.

Five of his fellow defendants were also jailed over the killing, receiving jail terms of between 10 and 18 years, over what prosecutors said was a fight between rival gangs. Three other men were acquitted.

The pioneer of afro-trap — a mix of hip-hop and African traditions — MHD rose to fame after becoming a viral sensation in 2015.

The 29-year-old, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, was charged with homicide in January 2019 and imprisoned. He was released after a year and a half in custody as investigations continued, and released a new album.

As Saturday’s verdict was handed down, several women in the public gallery burst into tears. MHD hugged one of them, maintaining his composure.

Those convicted — who all pleaded not guilty — have 10 days to appeal.

During his final statement to the court, before it retired to render the verdict after three weeks of proceedings, he again proclaimed his innocence.

“From the beginning, I have maintained my innocence in this case and I will continue to maintain my innocence,” he told the packed court.

The prosecutor had asked for an 18-year prison sentence for the rapper, acquittals for two of the accused, and jail sentences of 13-20 years for the others.

On the night of July 5, 2018, 23-year-old Loic K was rammed by a black Mercedes and then beaten up and stabbed by around a dozen people in a gritty part of the capital’s 10th arrondissement.

Although the rapper denied having been at the scene, a local resident filmed the incident from his window, and the Mercedes was quickly identified as belonging to MHD.

Other witnesses identified him by his haircut or a sweatshirt by Puma — for which he was a brand ambassador — according to investigative reports seen by AFP.

The car was found abandoned and burned out in a car park a day after the killing.

“A judicial truth emerged despite the law of silence,” said Juliette Chapelle, a lawyer for the victim’s family.

The killing happened in the Cite des Chaufourniers, a low-income estate in the area that the former pizza delivery driver continued to frequent despite his fame.

The football-mad performer, who was born in France to Guinean and Senegalese parents, is best known for “Afro Trap Part 3 (Champions League)”, a song in praise of the Paris Saint-Germain football club.

He had made waves abroad, drawing admiration from global stars such as Drake and Madonna.

  • ‘Amrit Kaal’ declared to create new consciousness among youth: Kerala Governor

    By PTI

BAHRAICH/ GONDA (UP): Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared the next 25 years as India’s “Amrit Kaal” to create a new consciousness among the youth so that the dreams of freedom fighters can be realised.

Addressing a function organised by the Rotary Club here on Sunday night, Governor Khan said it was the wish of the freedom fighters that the coming generations should live with self-respect.

“Many of us may not live to see the 100th year of Independence, but this Amrit Kaal or Amrit Mahotsav has been announced to create a new consciousness among the younger generation as India completes hundred years as an independent nation.”

“Many freedom fighters would not have thought of seeing the dawn of Independence. Many could not see it. But they made sacrifices for the nation’s future so that the citizens can walk with their heads raised with self-respect,” Khan said.

He said the need of the present is to provide education to everyone. Khan was in Bahraich on a two-day visit during which he attended several programmes.

In Gonda, Khan told reporters that India is the only culture in the world, which saw divinity in humanity and has humanised the divinity.

“We see God even in ants. The speciality and identity of India is its promotion of knowledge and intelligence,” Khan said.

The Kerala governor said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making efforts to bring a new consciousness to the country.

“Politicians and the public are not separate. Consciousness should be aroused in people who create leaders. If there is a layer of dust over anyone, then it should also be cleaned. We cannot escape our responsibilities,” he said.

To a question on non-BJP parties accusing the Centre of misusing the ED and CBI, Khan said, “The responsibility of safeguarding the Constitution is that of the court. Our institutes are not only doing a good job but have also become strong with time.”

“It is possible that someone may violate its dignity at a point, but that it is not final. If anybody has any objections, then they can seek court protection,” Khan said.

  • Bengal youth chops off wife’s palm after she lands govt job

    Express News Service

KOLKATA:  In a shocking incident, a youth in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district chopped off his wife’s right palm on Sunday after her goal of landing a government job, which was opposed by the man and his parents, came true. An investigation by police revealed the accused, Sheikh Mohammad, feared that his wife might leave her after getting the job and committed the offence so that she would be disqualified for the job.

Renu Khatun, the victim, recently got a job of a nurse in a state-run hospital for which she was preparing for the past three years. She was to join the service next week. “Her husband, who is a grocery shop owner, and in-laws were against Renu’s dream of working as a government employee. Mohammad and his parents are presently at large,” said an officer of the local police station.

Mohammad first smothered Renu with a pillow and then severed her palm with a chopper, said the police. “After Renu fell unconscious, Mohammad took her to the local hospital hiding the severed palm at home. The incident came to light after the woman became conscious and narrated her plight,” said the police officer.

Renu’s father Azizul Haque lamented that he never imagined his daughter would have to pay such a price for achieving her goal. Police said Mohammad had told his friends that Renu might leave him. “He wanted her to be disqualified and this is why he committed the crime,” the officer said.
