  • Vivek Oberoi Opens Up On The Lessons Learned In Bollywood, Says ‘Never Bow Your Head In Fear’ People News

New Delhi: From making his debut as a gangster in Ram Gopal Verma’s Company to playing the conniving Vikrant Dhawan in Inside Edge, Vivek Oberoi has put the good into being bad. However, the actor seems he has had a change of heart on screen, as he plays the righteous cop Vikram Bakshi in Rohit Shetty’s cop universe “Indian Police Force”.

“It has been fun and the entire journey, I started as challenging the cops and now I’m playing one. The one aspect that I loved about Rohit Shetty’s cop universe, other than being part of this mega set, was playing this interesting character. I think OTT also allows you to get into the layers of a character, there is an arc to explore, and there is a different level of applying your craft. Apart, this show also focuses on the human aspect of these men. People have this mindset of staying away from cops and not dealing with them. Vikram Bakshi epitomizes that, the human aspect of these men.”

He recalls how playing a cop took him back in time, as he remembered being transfixed as a teenager watching his father( Suresh Oberoi) playing a cop in the 1988 hit Tezaab. “In an era where we portrayed cops as morally corrupt, lazy and laid back. My father was this morally upright cop, who sees the man behind the criminal, was a lasting memory.”

He recalls, how he was forewarned about coming on to the OTT space by “shubhchintaks”(well-wishers) who saw it as a fall from grace for a mainstream actor. But with a stream of success, he says, “One needs to be a disruptor. This is the medium of the future. It connects with the youth, am surprised I have young fans. So one has to keep reinventing and innovating. Even experimenting with mediums, Rohit Shetty had done that he has reinvented the grammar of filmmaking. So one cannot be insecure in life, you have to know your value.”

It seems he has taken a leaf from his own life and experiences. Being hailed as the most promising star, with hits such as Saathiya and Yuva, he hit a rough patch. He also for the longest time was infamously remembered as the man who challenged Salman Khan for being a bully in 2003 and paid a price. He says he has had constant career obituaries penned for him.

“After I did a Shoutout At Lokhandwala in 2007, despite its success, I had no work for a year and a half. It was very difficult as I wondered why there was no one signing me. Those were dark days and that day I realized I would define my journey. I reached out to people in the Southern industry if Bollywood didn’t want to give me work.”

He further says after I got married to my wife Priyanka, I realized best to leave the career obstacles out of my home. The only thing I can sum up 20 years of my career is realize that 99.9% of the things that you worried about back which is not worth worrying about. You can either not change them or they were too insignificant. It is either of the two and you realize that it is true when they say life is about moving forward. You can’t drive you know, on the road going forward looking in the rearview mirror of a car. You have to forge relationships with those who matter.”

His only advice for people who want to make is that conviction and convenience can never travel in the same boat, “Bow your head in humility, never in servitude”.

  • ‘Love democracy of OTTs, felt empowered outside of lobbies’: Vivek Oberoi

    By PTI

MUMBAI: Praising the democratic nature of the streaming world, actor Vivek Oberoi says the digital medium has empowered talent, their background notwithstanding.

Oberoi, who made his acting debut 20 years ago with Ram Gopal Varma’s acclaimed gangster drama “Company”, was one of the early Bollywood actors to foray into the OTT with the Emmy-nominated sports-drama “Inside Edge”.

“I love the democracy of OTT. I hope it stays. I felt empowered outside of lobbies. On OTT, it doesn’t matter who you are, what you do matters. If your work is good, you will get appreciation,” the actor, also known for “Saathiya”, “Omkara” and “Shootout at Lokhandwala”, told PTI in an interview here.

There are no trappings of the number game or fight to get maximum screens to release a movie on over-the-top (OTT) platforms, he added.

“It is extremely liberating because it does not come with the paraphernalia of what Bollywood had become. Everyone talks about the number of theatres in which a film releases, the cost of promotion, publicity, the lobby. There are people who single-handedly have so much power that they can crush somebody else. All of that goes away on OTT.”

Following the success of his Prime Video sports series “Inside Edge”, the actor said he received quite a few offers but chose to opt for diverse projects like “Dharavi Bank” and Rohit Shetty’s upcoming series debut “India Police Force” with Prime Video.

“Dharavi Bank” features Suniel Shetty as the larger-than-life don Thalaivan from Mumbai’s slum area Dharavi and Oberoi as a cop Jayant Gavaskar.

The show is directed by Samit Kakkad, best known for films like “Ascharyachakit!” and “Half Ticket”.

Describing his character as an enigma, Oberoi said playing Jayant Gavaskar was a “big challenge”.

“Jayant Gavaskar is somebody who thinks something, says and does something else. He is a passionate and fearless man. He says the world is not a fair place and he puts his and his team’s life at risk but he feels responsible. All this was a big challenge,” he said.

Reflecting on his fewer appearances in Hindi films, the 46-year-old actor lamented about the lack of work opportunities from noted filmmakers.

“As an actor, you do your job, you perform well, you get appreciated, and you shine when given an opportunity. But the opportunity needs to come from the other side. There needs to be good producers and directors, like Rohit who said he wrote this (role in ‘India Police Force’) with me in mind. And I have poured my heart and soul into it,” he added.

Amidst the lull phase, Oberoi said it was the love of his fans that helped him sail through testing times.

  • Delhi HC dismisses plea seeking summoning of actor Vivek Oberoi, family in alleged cheating case

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has dismissed a plea seeking the summoning of Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi, his father Suresh Oberoi and their Delhi-based firm Yashi Multimedia Pvt Ltd for allegedly cheating an entertainment company in 2003.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav said he was disallowing the relief not only on the ground that the petitioner has resorted to civil remedies but also because the court found that perusal of the entire complaint would not prima facie attract commission of the offence of cheating under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“Even non-disclosure of commission of offence on the basis of the entire complaint would be one of the grounds to quash the complaint as per the decision of the Supreme Court,” the HC said in an order passed on November 1.

Petitioner Deepak Mehta, CEO of Mumbai’s Mehta Entertainment initially approached a magisterial court here with a criminal complaint against the Oberoi family and their company, seeking issuance of summons against them.

The complaint was dismissed. The dismissal was challenged before a revisional court and thereafter the HC.

Dismissing the petition, the HC said, “This court finds no justification to interfere with the order passed by the courts below in exercise of its powers under Section 482 of the CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code).”

“Accordingly, the instant petition is dismissed,” it said.

As per the complaint, petitioner was running an event management business and organising shows of celebrities/cine stars and film actors in different parts of the United States of America.

According to the plea, in January 2003, the complainant was introduced to the Oberois and Suresh Oberoi asked him to organise some shows for his son Vivek in the USA and Canada in August and September of that year.

It alleged that the deal for organising the shows was completed and Vivek’s consent was obtained and it was agreed that the shows would be organised in August or September 2003 for which USD 3,00,000 were to be paid to the actor.

“The complainant further stated that he remitted the aforesaid amount in the bank account of respondent no.1 (Yashi Entertainment). The complainant organised the shows but respondent no.5 (Vivek Oberoi) did not turn up,” the plea alleged.

It said efforts were made to resolve the issue but the same failed and the complainant’s money was not returned.
