  • Heavy rains: Lucknow schools, higher educational institutions to remain closed on Tuesday

    LUCKNOW: With heavy rains lashing several parts of Uttar Pradesh, the Lucknow district administration has declared holiday for all schools and higher educational institutions on Tuesday.

    A statement issued by District Magistrate of Lucknow Suryapal Gangwar said that schools will remain closed on Tuesday.

    Citing a government order, the DM said all higher educational institutions will also remain closed on Tuesday.

    A state government official said higher educational institutions will remain closed in the districts where the authorities have declared holiday in view of heavy rains.

    Special Secretary, Higher Education Department, Manoj Kumar has said in an order sent to the Director of Higher Education and all the regional higher education officers that in view of the possibility of heavy rains in the state, District Magistrates of many districts have declared holidays in educational institutions and such orders issued by the district magistrates would also be applicable to higher educational institutions.

    Earlier on Sunday, the district authorities in Lucknow, Noida, Ghaziabad, Agra, Meerut, Aligarh, Mathura, Kanpur, Etah, Mainpuri and Firozabad had ordered closure of schools on Monday.

    Several parts of Uttar Pradesh continued to receive heavy rains on Monday.

  • UP: Rape survivor set ablaze by accused’s family; 1 held

    MAINPURI (Uttar Pradesh): A 15-year-old girl, pregnant after she was raped three months back, was allegedly set on fire by the mother and sister of the accused, police said on Monday.

    After learning about the pregnancy, the mother-daughter duo took the minor to their house on the pretext of getting her married to the accused.

    However, later on Saturday night, they poured kerosene on the girl and set her ablaze, they said.

    Superintendent of Police Kamlesh Dixit said the neighbours rescued the minor and rushed her to a hospital with critical burn injuries.

    She was later referred to Saifai Medical College and her condition is stated to be critical, he said.

    According to police, on Thursday the girl’s mother discovered her daughter’s pregnancy after she took her to a doctor for a check-up following a stomach ache.

    A case was registered against the 25-year-old accused of rape and his mother and sister have been charged with attempt to murder, he said.

    The mother of the accused was arrested on Saturday and sent to jail, he said, adding efforts are on to nab the youth and his sister.

    The SP said all possible help is being given to the victim for her treatment.

  • A 10-time MLA, 7-time MP, MSY started his career as a teacher

    LUCKNOW: Mulayam Singh Yadav, one of the most prominent leaders of Uttar Pradesh, served as the chief minister of the state thrice and also as India’s defence minister. He was elected 10 times as a member of the assembly and seven times as a Lok Sabha member.

    He passed away at the age of 82 due to multi-organ failure at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Monday morning. Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son and SP chief Akhilesh confirmed his father’s demise in a tweet through the official Twitter handle of the party.

    “My respected father and everyone’s leader is no more – Akhilesh Yadav,” the tweet on Samajwadi Party’s Twitter handle read.

    Mulayam Singh Yadav had been admitted at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram since August 22 and his condition deteriorated a week ago when the SP patriarch was shifted to ICU and then to CCU. Currently, his treatment was being supervised by the team of senior doctors of Medanta hospital. He had been on life-saving drugs.

    As per the hospital sources, Mulayam had been suffering from acute kidney malfunction leading to an imbalance in the creatinine levels in his body. In such a condition, after keeping him on dialysis for some time, the doctors had shifted the veteran leader on Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) support and life-saving drugs.

    Born on November 22, 1939, in the village Saifai of Eatwah district in central UP, Mulayam Singh Yadav took education initial education in Etawah followed by Fatehabad and Agra. A known wrestler, Mulayam after completing his graduation and Bachelor of Teaching (BT), completed his higher education at Agra University, where he did his post-graduation in political science.

    An astute politician, Mulayam had started his career as a teacher at Jain Inter College in Karhal, in the Mainpuri district. In fact, the SP patriarch had done his schooling at the same school in 1955 when he took admission in Class 9th.  He did his Class 12th from the same school and joined it later as a teacher in 1963. He used to teach Hindi and social science.

    Mulayam was drawn to politics in 1960 when he started taking active part in the movement led by socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia after getting influenced by the socialist leader. However, he started his political journey formally in 1967 by contesting and winning the Assembly election as MLA from Jaswantnagar seat.

    A 10-time MLA and seven-time MP representing various constituencies across UP, Mulayam founded the Samajwadi Party in 1992 and he and rose to become the UP CM for the first time in 1989. He helmed UP thrice as CM from 1989-1991, 1993-1995 and 2003 to 2007. He was the country’s defence minister from 1996-1998 during the United Front government at the Centre.

    At present, Mulayam Sigh Yadav had been representing Mainpuri in Lok Sabha as MP. “Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji distinguished himself in UP and national politics. He was a key soldier for democracy during the Emergency. As Defence Minister, he worked for a stronger India. His Parliamentary interventions were insightful and emphasised furthering national interest,” Prime Minister Narendra Modiwrote in his tweet.

    “The death of Samajwadi Party patron Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was also India’s former defence minister, is a huge loss to Indian politics. May god grant peace to his soul, and give strength to his family members,” the Congress wrote on its official Twitter handle.

    Expressing grief over the demise of the veteran leader, UP CM Yogi Aditynath paid tributes saying an era of socialist movements has ended in the country with the passing away of the SP patriarch.

I pray to God for the peace of the departed soul and express my condolences to the bereaved family and supporters,” Yogi Aditynath’s post read.

    Amid the pouring condolences, the Uttar Pradesh Government declared a three—day state mourning and last rites with full state honours of the departed leader.

    Mulayam Singh Yadav’s mortal remains will be brought to Lucknow and will be kept at the premises of the state Assembly and the SP office. Last rites will be performed in his native Saifai village of Etawah, sources said.

  • Woman raped in moving car in UP’s Sultanpur

    SULTANPUR: An engineering student was allegedly raped in a moving car and thrown near a canal here in Jaisinghpur area, police said on Sunday.

    The incident had taken place Friday evening when a 23-year-old BTech student flagged an SUV for lift to go back home, they said.

    The driver allegedly raped her inside the car, threw her near a canal, and fled. The girl later told her family members about the incident when she reached her home.

    Circle officer, Jaisinghpur, Prashant Singh said that they have got a complaint and a probe is on in the matter and FIR will be registered after prima facie investigation.

    Later, the girl complained of severe stomach pain and it was found that she was pregnant.

    The village panchayat was informed and on October 6, the panchayat asked the accused to marry the girl.

    The mother of the accused then took the victim to their house, sprinkled petrol on her, and set her afire.

    The victim, who suffered severe burn injuries, was admitted to a district hospital in Mainpuri and later referred to Saifai for advanced treatment.

    The police have filed a case under sections 307, 376 of the IPC and relevant sections of the POCSO Act.

    The accused are being searched for and arrests will be made soon, the police said.

  • Mass cremation of Kanpur accident victims held; SHO suspended even as Yogi visits bereaved

    LUCKNOW: On a day, when a pall of gloom descended on Kortha village with the arrival of 27 bodies of those who lost their lives in a major road accident when a tractor-trolley fell into a waterbody in Ghatampur of Kanpur Dehat on late Saturday night, the police station house officer (SHO) of Saadh police station, which was nearest to the accident site, was suspended for alleged “dereliction of duty” with tractor driver still elusive of police net.

    UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the accident survivors at the Halet hospital in Kanpur and also the bereaved families at Kortha village.

    Meanwhile, in the wake of frequent road accidents resulting from tractor trollies being used to ferry the passengers as a mode of conveyance, the state government has ordered the respective district administrations government across the state to run a 10-day drive against the use of tractor trolleys to ferry passengers. The circular issued by the state government claims that those found flouting the rules would be slapped with a penalty of Rs 10000.

    According to Kanpur DM Vishak G, Saadh police station SHO was suspended for dereliction of duty as the accident spot was near Bhadeuna village, barely a kilometre from the Saadh police station, but the SHO reached there after around an hour.

    According to the eyewitnesses, the tractor was being driven at a high speed despite requests by the passengers to slow down, Additional Director General of Police (Kanpur zone) Bhanu Bhaskar shared with media persons. “Subsequently, the driver lost control over the tractor and it overturned. The women and children came under the trolley,” he said.

    The tractor-trolley was on its way to Ghatampur after the passengers attended a ‘mundan’ ceremony at the Chandrika Devi temple in Unnao.

    CM Adityanath visited the village, which is 4-5 kilometres from the accident site, and consoled the families of the victims. “It is a tragic incident. The government, in order to stop such accidents, has been running many awareness programmes from time to time. I had appealed yesterday that road safety should be a subject of priority for us,” said the CM.

    “Today, I had called the officials of the transport corporation, and have categorically told them that there is a need to run a comprehensive awareness programme on road safety, and there is a need to connect the schools, colleges and all the stakeholders,” he said.

    Meanwhile, Kortha village sunk into a sea of tears with screams of grief everywhere as the bodies of 26 villagers, who were killed in the road accident on the highway in Ghatampur area, arrived after post-mortem examination in the early hours of Sunday.

    Every family of the Nishad community in the village which houses 200 to 250 homes, had lost one or the other. Twenty-seven people, mostly women and children, had died and around 20 sustained critical injuries when a recklessly driven tractor-trolley carrying around 35 to 40 people fell into a roadside pond on the highway in the Saadh area of Ghatampur.

    Besides CM Yogi, politicians, officials and the local populace turned up at the village to pay tributes to departed souls. Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, who reached the village to console the family, broke down and wept. UP Cabinet Minister Rakesh Sachan, Minister of State Ajit Singh Pal and MLA Abhijit Singh Sanga also reached the village with the dead bodies. They were consoling the family by visiting every house assuring all help from the government. 

    Locals thronged the mishap site in Saadh village and later the Dyodhi Ghat to see the mass funeral. The district administration has requested the families of the deceased in the village to perform the last rites together at the Dyodhi Ghat.

    AMROHA (UP): In a seemingly bizarre incident, guests at a wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district were asked to show their Aadhaar cards before they were allowed to pick up dinner plates.

    The incident took place in Hasanpur where two sisters were getting married at the same venue.

    Their family began panicking when they saw a huge turnout of guests, many of whom seemed strangers, and then decided to ask the guests to show their Aadhaar cards before they were allowed to enter the dining area.

    While a number of genuine guests who had come without their Aadhaar cards, saw this as an insult and left the venue without eating, several others who had their Aadhaar cards went in and enjoyed the meal.

    Some of the guests made a video of the incident and uploaded it on social media.

  • UP cop who raised issue of poor-quality food, gets transfer punishment

    FIROZABAD: As an apparent punishment for highlighting the issue of substandard food being served to the men in khaki, the police constable who had posted a video in this connection has been transferred to Ghazipur district, which is 600 kilometres away from Firozabad.

    Earlier, the 26-year-old constable, Manoj Kumar was sent on a ‘long leave’ after videos of him highlighting his plight outside the Police Lines with tears in his eyes and a plate of food in his hand had gone viral.

    He was captured on video saying that policemen were being served substandard food after 12 hours of duty. “Even a dog won’t eat this. How can we work if we do not have anything in our stomachs?” he had stated.

    Manoj Kumar, a resident of Aligarh district, said, “There are a total of six members in my family, including two younger brothers and an unmarried sister. My parents are old and undergoing treatment. It will be very difficult for me to take care of them by staying on duty over 600 kilometres away from them. I am the only earning member in my family.”

    A friend of Kumar, who is also in the police force, said, “It is disheartening to see that an honest man like him is made to suffer for raising a genuine issue. He comes from a humble background and his two brothers still work as daily wagers. In fact, Manoj worked as a child labourer as well to pursue his education.”

    FIROZABAD: As an apparent punishment for highlighting the issue of substandard food being served to the men in khaki, the police constable who had posted a video in this connection has been transferred to Ghazipur district, which is 600 kilometres away from Firozabad.

    Earlier, the 26-year-old constable, Manoj Kumar was sent on a ‘long leave’ after videos of him highlighting his plight outside the Police Lines with tears in his eyes and a plate of food in his hand had gone viral.

    He was captured on video saying that policemen were being served substandard food after 12 hours of duty. “Even a dog won’t eat this. How can we work if we do not have anything in our stomachs?” he had stated.

    Manoj Kumar, a resident of Aligarh district, said, “There are a total of six members in my family, including two younger brothers and an unmarried sister. My parents are old and undergoing treatment. It will be very difficult for me to take care of them by staying on duty over 600 kilometres away from them. I am the only earning member in my family.”

    A friend of Kumar, who is also in the police force, said, “It is disheartening to see that an honest man like him is made to suffer for raising a genuine issue. He comes from a humble background and his two brothers still work as daily wagers. In fact, Manoj worked as a child labourer as well to pursue his education.”

  • Harassed by father out on parole, two sisters in UP consume poison; one dead

    BANDA: Fed up of being harassed by their father, who was out on parole, two sisters allegedly consumed poison here, resulting in the death of one, police said on Tuesday.

    The incident took place in Parhri village under the Baberu police station area.

    Additional Superintendent of Police Laxmi Niwas Mishra said on late Sunday night, two sisters had consumed poison.

    Both the sisters were rushed to the Banda Medical College for treatment, where Priyanka (21) died on Monday.

    The younger sister Sapna (19) is undergoing treatment, he added.

    The mother of the girls Rekha Devi lodged a complaint against her husband Malkhan Singh, brother-in-law Suresh and Rajesh, following which a case of abetting suicide was registered against them, Mishra said, adding that the father has been arrested.

    Citing the complaint lodged, the Additional SP said the three often used to beat her and her daughters, threatened the with a countrymade pistol and did not allow them to cook food in the house.

    The accused were sentenced to life imprisonment in a double murder case, which had taken place 16 years ago and had come home on parole six months ago, he added.

  • Samajwadi Party’s march towards UP Vidhan Bhavan stopped midway

    LUCKNOW: Police on Monday stopped the protest march taken out by the Samajwadi Party highlighting the issues in Uttar Pradesh before the monsoon session of the state legislature.

    As the SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, legislators and other party workers started moving towards the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Bhavan from the party office located on Vikramaditya Marg, police stopped them near Vikramaditya Marg crossing.

    Following this Yadav and the other party leaders sat on a dharna there.

    During the march, the party MLAs and MLCs will raise issues of unemployment, price rise, crime against women and poor law and order situation in the state, the SP’s chief spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said here on Sunday.

    Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Piyush Mordia told PTI that the SP leaders were stopped near Vikramaditya Marg crossing. No arrests have been made so far in this regard, Mordia said. He said the party was given a route to take out their march but they did not opt for that route and went on another route, following which they were stopped.

    Mordia said the party workers were stopped, so that the common public does not face any inconvenience and there is no law and order problem.

    In view of the march, barricades were put up on Vikramaditya Marg by the police and the public was not allowed to use the road.

    The SP chief reached the party office at around 10 am from where he along with other legislators and party workers started marching towards the Vidhan Bhavan.

    The party’s planned protest at the Legislative Assembly against inflation, unemployment, and the law-and-order situation in the state could not begin on September 14 as police stopped its leaders from reaching the spot.

    Police personnel were stationed outside the SP office and the residences of its leaders in Lucknow hours before the scheduled protest. Heavy police deployment was also visible near the Legislative Assembly in Hazratganj.

    The protest was scheduled to start in front of the statue of former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh on the Assembly premises.
