  • Uttar Pradesh government has been successful in ‘eradicating’ encephalitis: CM Yogi Adityanath

    By PTI

SIDDHARTHNAGAR: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said his government has been successful in “eradicating” encephalitis in Uttar Pradesh and alleged that previous dispensations in the state did not do anything for the prevention of the disease.

Speaking at the launch of a campaign aimed at controlling communicable diseases here, Adityanath said encephalitis used to be a “curse” for eastern Uttar Pradesh.

“Due to this, a number of people died every year from 1977 to 2017. In eastern UP, 2,000-3,000 deaths used to take place every year because of this disease. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state government took on encephalitis, and through the Swachh Bharat Mission and other campaigns, we started working with the World Health Organisation,” he said.

“Those who had only given assurances for 40 years, could not do anything,” he said referring to previous state governments, and added, “We have been successful in eradicating it (encephalitis) completely. Our forefathers used to say that prevention is more important than cure.”

Encephalitis is a serious neurological illness that causes inflammation of the brain.

Its symptoms may include headache, fever, confusion, stiff neck and vomiting.

The disease most commonly affects children and young adults and can lead to mortality.

According to the National Health Portal, viruses are the main causative agents in encephalitis cases, although other sources such as bacteria, fungus, parasites, chemicals, toxins and non-infectious agents have also been blamed.

The chief minister further said, “This is an awareness programme, and if you associate yourself with this programme, then I am of the view that encephalitis, dengue, chikungunya and kala azar will be eradicated. We have also taken a pledge to eradicate filaria and tuberculosis, and we will not allow such diseases to last in Uttar Pradesh.”

Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh holds the “record” for setting up the maximum number of medical colleges in the last five years.

“We have established a medical college in Siddharthnagar and students have enroled for the first session. In the coming year, we will set up 17-18 medical colleges in the state so that people can avail services of health experts,” he said.

  • Bill tabled in Lok Sabha to add four communities in Scheduled Tribes list

    By Express News Service

NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha on Friday passed a bill to include certain communities in four newly created districts of Uttar Pradesh in the Scheduled Tribes list. The bill, which was approved by voice vote by the Lower House, amends the Scheduled Tribes Order to recognise Gond community in Chandauli, Kushinagar, Sant Kabir Nagar and Sant Ravidas Nagar.

Tabling the Constitution (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) Orders (Second Amendment) Bill, 2022, Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said the Narendra Modi government is committed to the welfare of tribals and has been increasing the budget allocations for the welfare of tribals.

“The Modi government is committed to the welfare of tribals and this bill is just a way forward,” Munda said, adding that the government was coming up with different bills for reservation as the list of such tribes is different in different states and the issues ought to be deliberated in Parliament.

Rejecting the Opposition charge of politicising the issue, the minister said that bill provides for welfare of tribals in Uttar Pradesh where the elections have already been completed. “This is not linked with elections,” he added.

Participating in the debate, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the government should come up with a comprehensive bill for reservation of SCs instead of working in a piecemeal manner. Similar issue was raised by NK Premachandran (RSP).

BJP MP from Madhya Pradesh Guman Singh Damor said some tribals who are very poor and uneducated are being converted by offering inducements. These people are getting converted for inducements and due to this our tribal culture is being “destroyed”, he said.

Speaking before Damor, Congress MP from Odisha Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka said his party supports the bill and welcomes the necessary steps by the government. “Now they talk of conversion, the Hindu marriage act is not applicable to tribals. A tribal who converts to Christianity is being attacked… they want to do away with reservation, have given away land to industrialists,” he said.

  • After free rations, Yogi govt prepares to set up community kitchens across Uttar Pradesh

    Express News Service

LUCKNOW: After giving an extension to the free ration scheme at its first cabinet meeting, Yogi government 2.0 is proceeding to set up community kitchens across the state in order to provide food that is free of cost or highly subsidised to the poor and deprived.

The UP government has been distributing free rations to 15 crore beneficiaries every month since 2020. Under the scheme, the beneficiaries get packed 1 kg of whole chana, 1 litre of edible oil, 1 kg of salt besides 5 kg of wheat and rice per unit (family member) per month.

The community kitchen scheme would be commenced in consonance with the recent order of the Supreme Court, delivered in January, whereby the Centre was asked to start a model scheme for community kitchens across the country providing additional food grain to states to address the issues related to malnutrition.

As per official sources, the Yogi government has begun preparations to set up community kitchens in urban and rural areas to provide cooked nutritious food for free or at very nominal prices to the poor.

Then modalities to start the scheme will be chalked out at a high-level meeting shortly this week involving all the departments concerned. Different departments may be given different roles in running such kitchens, said the sources.

The sources claimed that besides the urban and rural local bodies which will be entrusted with setting up the kitchen in cities and villages respectively, food and civil supplies department will make the food grain for meals available andIntegrated Child Development Services department will ensure nutritional and caloric value of the food cooked in such community kitchens.

Issues related to the pricing per meal and the criteria of beneficiaries to get access to community kitchen would also be decided in the meeting.

In UP, the significance of such kitchens can be assessed by the fact that the state figures among over a dozen states which fall in the ‘severe’ category of malnourishment.
