  • Hardik Pandya roasted on social media for screaming at senior pro Mohammed Shami

    By IANS

MUMBAI: Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Hardik Pandya’s outburst at team-mate and senior India bowler Mohammed Shami, after the latter did not go all out to take a catch in Monday night’s game against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), has not gone down well with the all-rounder’s fans.

At the DY Patil stadium on Monday, a measured half-century from captain Kane Williamson, after their bowlers had applied the brakes in the last five overs, sealed SRH’s eight-wicket win over Gujarat Titans.

Dear Hardik, you are a terrible captain. Stop taking it out on your teammates, particularly someone as senior as Shami. #IPL #IPL2022 #GTvsSRH pic.twitter.com/9yoLpslco7

After the bowlers had conceded 44 runs and taken three wickets in the last five overs to restrict Gujarat to 162/7, Williamson led the chase with patience and precision while making 57 off 46 balls, laced with two fours and four sixes. He found support from Abhishek Sharma (42) and Nicholas Pooran doing the finishing job with an unbeaten 34.

It was in the 13th over being bowled by Pandya that the Titans skipper shouted at Shami after the latter apparently did not go all out to take a catch offered by Rahul Tripathi. Before that, SRH skipper Kane Williamson had hit Pandya for back-to-back maximums off the second and third ball of the over.

The Titans had an opportunity to dismiss the New Zealander’s partner Tripathi off the last ball of the over when the 31-year-old batter’s upper cut went horribly wrong and flew towards deep third man.

@hardikpandya7 shouting at the #mohammedshami is disgraceful what Shami has done for #Indianteam is commendable and #Hardik has not even done half of it. #shameful #HardikPandya

Hardik Pandya doesn’t deserve to be the Captain of any team one who doesn’t know how to speak to the team members and that too a senior player shouldn’t be the Captain you do not win all games Cricket is a gentleman game pls note @hardikpandya7

Just watch the Kane Williamson reaction when Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi & Markram dropped catches & compare it with Hardik Pandey reaction to dropped catch by Shami, Pandya was screaming at his senior partner Shami, that’s the difference between a Leader & a Captain #SRHvGT

Shami, posted in the deep, could have latched on to the catch had he moved forward. Instead, the veteran India pacer moved back a couple of steps and collected the ball on first bounce. Already clobbered for two sixes by Williamson in the over, Pandya vent his anger at Shami.

A fan called Pandya a terrible skipper, tweeting, “Dear Hardik, you are a terrible captain. Stop taking it out on your teammates, particularly someone as senior as Shami,” while another fan wrote “@hardikpandya7 shouting at the #mohammedshami is disgraceful what Shami has done for #Indianteam is commendable and #Hardik has not even done half of it. #shameful #HardikPandya.”

Another fan wrote, “Hardik Pandya doesn’t deserve to be the Captain of any team one who doesn’t know how to speak to the team members and that too a senior player shouldn’t be the Captain you do not win all games Cricket is a gentleman game pls note @hardikpandya7.”

  • Great to spend some time learning from Dale Steyn: Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Marco Jansen

    By IANS

NAVI MUMBAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Marco Jansen said spending time to learn from fellow South African and pace bowling coach Dale Steyn has been great for him in terms of learning.

This is left-arm pacer Jansen’s first brush with the mega T20 league after making heads turn by picking 19 wickets in his debut Test series against India, followed by picking nine scalps in series against New Zealand.

“Obviously it’s great to learn from him (Dale Steyn). As a youngster, I’ve come here to try and learn as much as possible from him because he knows the conditions quite well. He played here more than a few times, so great to spend some time with him and obviously been learning a lot,” said Jansen in pre-match chat with broadcasters Star Sports ahead of match against Gujarat Titans.

Jansen admitted that he is yet to get used to the heat in India but has adjusted his bowling as per the conditions here. “For me personally the humidity, that quite gets to me. But otherwise, the pitch and conditions – it’s basically summing it up what the pitch requires from you as a bowler – whether it’s pace, bounce or seam movement. It was a bit challenging at the start but I’m getting used to it.”

Jansen, who made his IPL debut in an eight-wicket win over Chennai and scalped the big wicket of MS Dhoni, signed off by saying that Hyderabad is looking to make improvements in every match. “After that win (against Chennai), everyone got quite good confidence out of it, we just take it game-by-game and just trying to improve every time we get an opportunity to do so.”

  • Injured Washington Sundar likely to miss Sunrisers Hyderabad’s next two matches

    By PTI

NAVI MUMBAI: All-rounder Washington Sundar is likely to miss at least the next two IPL matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad after suffering split webbing in his bowling hand, head coach Tom Moody has said.

A disciplined bowling effort followed by skipper Kane Williamson’s half-century helped SRH beat Gujarat Titans by eight wickets at the D.Y. Patil Stadium on Monday night.

During the match however, Washington got injured and couldn’t bowl his full quota of overs.

His three wicketless overs – two of which were in the powerplay – went for just 14 runs.

“Washington has torn the webbing in his right hand, between his thumb and first finger. We must monitor that over the next two-three days. Hopefully, it isn’t a significant blow. I’d imagine it’d take probably a week or so to settle down,” SRH coach Moody said after the win.

In their next two upcoming outings, Sunrisers will take on Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Playing for a team that is thin on spin bowling, Washington has been the lone specialist tweaker for the Sunrisers so far this season.

Since giving away 47 runs in his three wicketless overs against Rajasthan Royals in his team’s opener, Washington has picked 4 for 63 across 11 overs.

Laid low by injury and illness over the last few months.

Washington had missed India’s three T20Is against West Indies in February after suffering a hamstring while fielding during the third ODI in Ahmedabad.

He had also missed the second half of IPL in the UAE last year after hurting his finger.

Meanwhile, the injury to batter Rahul Tripathi, which forced him to retire hurt midway through their chase against the Titans, isn’t a serious one.

After falling on the ground right after hitting a six, he needed medical attention.

“He’s fine, he’s just getting cramped,” Moody said.

“It’s humid conditions and we get him to run to hotspots, so he covers a lot of ground in the first two-three overs.

“That is something we may need to look at to make sure we get the maximum out of him with the bat because obviously, he is a very valuable player for us.”

  • IPL 2022: It’s four losses in four for struggling CSK after eight-wicket thumping by SRH

    Express News Service

CHENNAI: T20 is all about making the most of the powerplay and power hitting from thereon. The team that does well in these two areas tends to emerge victorious more often than not on a given day. Sunrisers Hyderabad first did well in the power play by not conceding any wicket, then their opener Abhishek Sharma (75) excelled in power hitting to set up a good platform for their team to defeat Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets in the Indian Premier League clash at Mumbai on Saturday, registering their first win of the season.

In contrast, CSK lost two wickets in the powerplay and this slowed down their run-rate. Although Moeen Ali made 48, none of the top-order batters of CSK could excel in power hitting. Having been put into bat in the afternoon, in perfect conditions, one expected CSK to bat out the opposition as they had huge depth in its ranks, but that was not to be as they succumbed to their fourth defeat in a row.

“It’s with the ball that we are disappointed, but we were 20-25 runs short. We were looking to fight till the end. 155 isn’t bad and our bowlers were looking to take wickets. We’ll talk about where we are lacking. We are professionals and need to work hard, stick together and come back stronger,” said CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja after the defeat.

Set a target of 155 for win, Hyderabad’s Abhishek and Kane Williamson first played a bit cautiously to have a feel of the surface and conditions. Once they gained confidence, it was a run fest. The duo added 89 runs for the first wicket in 12.1 overs.

After Williamson (32) fell to Mukesh Choudhary, Abhishek took charge of the proceedings. His presence of mind to pick the gaps to score effortlessly was on full display against a flat CSK attack. Rahul Tripathi did not lag behind and matched Abhishek stroke for stroke. The duo added 59 runs in five overs before Abhishek holed out off Dwayne Bravo to Jordan in the deep. Thereafter Tripathi (39 n.o.) and Nicholas Pooran finished the formalities.

Sources in the team indicated that CSK coach Stephen Fleming apart from the regular team meetings had a word with the players individually and tried to boost their self-confidence in order to arrest the slide. Sources also revealed that the former New Zealand captain had told the players to have self-belief in their abilities and start afresh, forgetting what had happened in the previous games. He advised them to play with a positive frame of mind. However this pep talk did not work.

Put into bat, CSK had an excellent start with Robin Uthappa and Ruturaj Gaikwad striking well. The duo handled the right-left combo of Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Marco Jansen effectively. But Ruturaj failed to convert his good start as he was castled by T Natarajan failing to read an inswinger, angled at the middle stump. CSK were reduced to 41/2 in the powerplay.

Rayudu and Moeen Ali consolidated to add 62 runs off 50 balls for the third wicket. But, Washington Sundar varied the pace and did not give the length for Rayudu to exploit. Eventually, Rayudu holed out off Washington to Markram in the deep. After Moeen’s dismissal, it was left to Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni to excel in death overs, but that was not to be as Marco Jansen and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar bowled well to restrict them to 154 for seven in 20 overs.

Brief scores: CSK 154/7 in 20 ovs (Moeen 48, Washington 2/21) lost to SRH 155/2 in 17.4 ovs (Abhishek 75, Bravo 1/29).

  • Avesh Khan bowls brilliant 18th over as Lucknow Super Giants beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 12 runs

    By PTI

NAVI MUMBAI: Lucknow Super Giants paid 25 times more than his base price of Rs 20 lakh to get Avesh Khan’s services in IPL-15.

The move was worth it as his excellent bowling acted as the catalyst for his team’s 12-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad here on Monday.

Heading into the lucrative T20 league as the most expensive uncapped Indian player, Avesh picked up four big wickets for only 24 runs and bowled a brilliant 18th over to turn the match decisively in LSG’s favour.

Asked to bat first, skipper KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda struck useful half-centuries to lift Lucknow Super Giants to 169 for seven after a disastrous start.

Chasing 170, Kane Williamson’s (16) innovation brought him two fours and a six but he paid the price for going overboard, his ramp shot off Avesh finding a sliding Andrew Tye at short fine leg in the fourth over with SRH score reading 25 for one.

Avesh brought about Abhishek Sharma’s downfall with a change in pace as the batter failed to read it while trying to loft him.

As Sharma made his way back to the dugout, last-game’s half centurion Aiden Markram walked out to join Rahul Tripathi in the middle, and the two began rebuilding the SRH innings.

Placed at 51 for two at the end of the seventh over, Tripathi used Tye’s pace to hit the Australian bowler for three fours and then, using his wrists, smashed Krunal Pandya (2/27) for a six over fine leg.

A quite 10th over was, however, followed by the dismissal of Markram, the bowler being Krunal.

Going strong at 44 off 30 balls, Tripathi tried to slog sweep Krunal and hit straight to deep mid-wicket, where Ravi Bishnoi was stationed.

Nicholas Pooran smashed Krunal over long-on for six and then carted Jason Holder (3/34) for 15 runs to bring the equation down to 50 form the last 30 balls.

Andrew Tye kept it fairly tight in the 17th over, giving not more than eight runs, before Pooran hoicked Avesh Khan over deep square leg for a maximum.

However, Avesh had the last laugh as Pooran mistimed his knee-high full toss.

Earlier, after his team lost three wickets for just 27 runs in the powerplay, Rahul (68 off 50 balls) found an able ally in Hooda (51 off 33 balls) and added 87 runs for the fourth wicket to revive the innings.

Rahul hit six fours and a six, while Hooda found the fence three times and also cleared it thrice.

Coming back from a long break after playing their opener last Tuesday, SRH made a dream start and left the Super Giants in all sorts of trouble early on.

Making a strong comeback after the pounding in his team’s heavy defeat against Rajasthan Royals, Washington Sundar (2/28) was handed the new ball and he delivered in his very first over, and SRH’s second, dismissing the dangerous Quinton de Kock with his off-break bowling on a grassy pitch that prompted Kane Williamson to put two slips when Bhuvneshwar Kumar started the proceedings.

Backed to bowl in the powerplay despite going for plenty in the previous game, Washington got de Kock (1) to chip one to Williamson at cover.

Few moments later, Washington had Evin Lewis (1) trapped in front of the wicket after the swashbuckling West Indian batter failed to execute his slog sweep.

It was another huge wicket for SRH given Lewis’ blazing, match-winning knock against Chennai Super Kings last Thursday.

Manish Pandey struck Romario Shepherd for a four and a six but then, going for one too many, ended up lobbing a catch to mid-on in the same over to leave LSG in a spot of bother.

Spurred by the early success, Williamson effected bowling changes frequently but he may have delayed by at least an over in introducing the attacking T Natarajan while opting for Abdul Samad’s innocuous, part-time seam up stuff at the DY Patil Stadium.

The pacy Umran Malik consistently hit 145 kmps but also leaked plenty of runs, allowing KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda to settle down and revive LSG’s innings.

Having withstood the early reverses, the duo of Rahul and Hooda went about their task in a professional manner, finding the boundaries as well as running the singles and twos as the 100 came up in the 14th over with Malik going for 16 runs.

Shepherd broke the partnership when he had Hooda caught in the deep to signal the arrival of the in-form Ayush Badoni (19 off 12), who got into the groove with a boundary.

  • IPL 2022: Brian Lara, Dale Steyn part of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s revamped support staff

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday named West Indies batting legend Brian Lara and South African pace great Dale Steyn as part of their revamped support staff ahead of the 2022 IPL.

Lara, who is usually seen commentating during the IPL, has taken up the coaching role at Sunrisers. He has been named strategic advisor and batting coach.

The team made the announcement via social media.

Steyn, who has played for multiple IPL teams in the past including Sunrisers, has been appointed the pace bowling coach.

He had announced his retirement earlier this year.

Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan remains the spin bowling coach.

Moody returns as head coach after fellow Australian Trevor Bayliss quit following the 2021 season.

Moody was Sunrisers’ director of cricket last season.

Former India batter Hemang Badani has been named fielding coach while Simon Katich, who has been the head coach of RCB, has been appointed assistant coach.

Sunrisers had retained three players including skipper Kane Wiliamson, uncapped Umran Malik and Abdul Samad ahead of the mega auction in February.

The team finished last in the 2021 IPL.

  • IPL retentions: David Warner, Jonny Bairstow not retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad

    By ANI

NEW DELHI: Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has not retained star openers David Warner and Jonny Bairstow ahead of the mega auction of the upcoming season. All the eight IPL franchises will reveal the list of their retained players later today. SRH thanked all the players ahead of the event on Tuesday.

“We thank the players for their contribution to SRH over the years. This is not a goodbye, as we hope to welcome back some Risers in the auction,” SRH captioned the post on Instagram. Commenting on the post, Warner express gratitude towards the fans and penned an emotional note confirming he won’t play for SRH in the upcoming season.

“Thanks to all of you for your support over the years, up and downs, my family and I can’t stress enough how much we appreciated the love and passion you showed towards us and the team. Candice and I truely wish all the fans the very best for the future and hope who ever you wish to support the best. Love the Warner’s,” Warner said.

Bairstow, the England opener, also thanked fans for the support during his stint with SRH. “Thank you all for your support! Hopefully at some point our paths cross again in the future,” Bairstow commented on the post.

The two new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises — Lucknow and Ahmedabad were allotted a budget of Rs 33 crore to pick three players who go back into the pool before the mega auction begins.

In the mail sent by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to all the franchises, which had been accessed by ANI, the rules were formally conveyed and the salary purse for all the teams was set at Rs 90 crore.

The amount is an increase from the IPL 2021 auction as then the purse was of Rs 85 crore. The eight existing franchises (CSK, KKR, RCB, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and SunRisers Hyderabad) have been allowed to retain up to four players.

The BCCI had set the retention window for the eight older franchises from November 1-30, and the window for Lucknow and Ahmedabad is from December 1-25.

If one of the eight existing franchises decides to retain four players, then they will be debited Rs 16 crore for the first player, Rs 12 crore for the second player, Rs 8 crore for the third player, and Rs 6 crore for the fourth player and the total deduction will be 42 crore.

For the eight franchises, rules have been set that they cannot retain more than three Indians (capped/uncapped). They cannot retain more than two overseas players and not more than two uncapped Indian players.

For the two new franchises — Lucknow and Ahmedabad — they cannot pick more than two Indian players (capped/uncapped). They cannot pick more than one overseas player and more than one Indian uncapped player.

  • SRH management didn’t give reason for sacking me from captaincy, reveals Warner

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Star Australia batter David Warner on Tuesday claimed that the Sunrisers Hyderabad management did not provide him with any reason as to why he was removed from captaincy in the IPL earlier this season.

Warner was replaced by New Zealander Kane Williamson as SRH captain during the first half of the IPL in India as the team was lying at the bottom after losing five out of six matches.

The change in captaincy did not reverse SRH’s fortunes as they finished at the bottom of the IPL points table.

A struggling Warner was omitted from the playing eleven in the last few matches when the lucrative T20 tournament resumed in the UAE.

“With the utmost respect for the owners, Trevor Baylis, Laxman, Moody and Murali, when a decision gets made, it has to be a unanimous one. You don’t know who the person is going for you and who isn’t,” Warner told ‘India Today’.

“The other disappointing thing for me was not being explained why I was dropped as captain. If you want to go along the lines of form, it is a difficult one because, I guess whatever you have done in the past would have some weight moving forward, you would think.”

The 34-year-old Warner said being stripped off captaincy was “a tough pill to swallow” but he would want to move on.

“Especially when you have played about 100 games for the franchise, I think I had four bad games in those first five matches in Chennai.

“It is difficult, a tough pill to swallow. There are still questions to which I think I’ll never get answers, but you have to move on,” he added.

The Australian said that he would love to represent SRH again but that is not in his hands.

“I would love nothing more than to represent Sunrisers but obviously, that decision is with the owners,” he said.

“I really enjoyed my time with Sunrisers, you all out there (fans) make it so special for us (family). Hopefully, I’ll get to come back out there, whether it be in the SRH uniform or someone else’s. I will salute you all when I come back to play in Hyderabad,” he added.
