Let’s break down the key features you need to consider when buying a new handset

    Operating System

Android and iOS are the two most commonly used operating systems in smartphones nowadays. Android is employed by a wide range of manufacturers, while iOS is exclusive to Apple. Choose the one that fits your requirements.

    Display

A smartphone with a 5.5 or 6-inch HD or QHD display is usually an ideal option. If you enjoy streaming videos, editing photos or videos, downloading, playing games, and watching movies, this display will allow you to enjoy a rich media experience.

    Battery

The power of a smartphone is determined by its battery life. If you use apps, play games, stream videos, and more, opt for a smartphone with at least a 3500mAh battery or above for optimal performance.

    Storage

The storage capacity of the smartphone plays a crucial role, especially if you store a lot of music, photos, and videos on your phone. You can opt for the 128GB or 256GB storage variant, respectively.

    Camera

The camera is the heart of the smartphone, especially for those who love taking pictures, creating vlogs, and shooting videos. The megapixel count is not the only factor to consider; other features like aperture, shutter speed, image stabilization, and autofocus should also be taken into account.

    Connectivity

A smartphone with a USB interface, Wi-Fi, the latest Bluetooth version, along with a location technology (GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo, QZSS) are basic requirements for users.

  • Gamers got new toys with PS5, Xbox Series X, new Nvidia and AMD cards but left waiting for deliveries

You are in the middle of a pandemic. The schools are shut down. There are no exams. You can’t go out and meet friends. What do you do for entertainment? Pick up your PlayStation, computer, smartphone and, play games. In the past year, this applied to people from every walk of life. 2020 was a crucial year for the gaming industry. Both Microsoft and Sony introduced their new-gen gaming consoles and there was an increased demand for computer hardware as well.

Several announcements were made. How many of them were fulfilled is a different story altogether, especially in India. The affected distribution chains, economic challenges and even company goof-ups, made 2020 a promising, yet frustrating year for gamers.

The industry remains hopeful and see these issues as no different than those faced by other sectors. Manvendra Shukul, CEO of Lakshya, one of India’s leading game art creation company compares the delays and disruptions to those seen by Hollywood films.

The phone has also been listed on the Geekbench benchmarking website.

Photos of the handset were also revealed last month. This Samsung phone is expected to be launched in the budget category. According to a report by rootmygalaxy, Samsung Galaxy M12, a smartphone with model number SM-M127F / DS, has received a certificate from Thailand’s NBTC. This listing revealed that the Samsung Galaxy M12 will have an Exynos 850 processor, up to 3GB of RAM and Android 11 OS. At the same time, Bluetooth SIG and Wi-Fi Alliance website listings were reported to have features like Bluetooth 5.0 and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. • 12 trends that show how true wireless earbuds became one of the ‘hottest’ gadgets in 2020

The year 2020 saw the market for Truly Wireless earbuds (TWS) expand. The pandemic and consequent rise in work from home as well as increased dependency on smartphones for entertainment led to the exponential demand for TWS earbuds. Depending on what users are looking for — sound quality, comfort, battery life, or noise cancellation, there is a range of options for all. Here’s looking at key trends that shaped the TWS market during the year.

The economic slowdown caused by the Pandemic did not affect the TWS category. As per IDC, TWS made for 39.7% of the overall earwear category, as close to 4 million TWS devices were shipped during the third quarter of the year 2020, recording a four-digit y-o-y growth of 1156.3%.

  • Poco Laptop Models May Be Coming to India as Rebranded Mi Laptops, Alleged Battery Listings Suggest

Poco may launch laptops in India as two laptop battery models have reportedly been spotted on Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website. The model numbers R15B02W and R14B02W are listed with both Mi and Poco branding which suggests that these could be rebranded Mi laptops that launch under Poco branding. It seems like Poco, that recently became an independent brand globally, is looking to diversify its portfolio beyond smartphones. As of yet, the brand has not shared any information on any upcoming laptops.

The Poco branded laptops are expected to come with battery models R15B02W and R14B02W, as tweeted by known tipster Mukul Sharma. These model numbers were spotted on BIS certification website, which means that they will eventually launch in the country. However, both models were listed under Mi and Poco branding which further suggests that these could be rebranded Mi laptops that will launch under the Poco brand. That isn’t surprising at all, considering the number of Poco phones that are rebranded Redmi phones.

As per an AliExpress listing, the battery with model number R15B02W appears to belong to Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro 15 that is available in China. Judging by the R14B02W model number, it could be for a 14-inch version of the laptop. These laptops models could come to India under Poco branding.

  • Android Emoji Kitchen update lets you customize emoji in 14,000 new ways

Ever think there aren’t enough emoji on your smartphone? While new options get added every year, Google has come up with a way to help you express yourself by customizing emojis that you already have on your phone.

Android Emoji Kitchen was unveiled in February this year giving the option to combine certain elements of different emojis, but now an update has expanded the feature bringing 14,000 new options.

Why would you want this? It allows you to take elements such as the shocked face and combine it with the ghost so you can change the expression on certain emojis and more. Some of the options aren’t the best, and we’ve managed to make some pretty weird combinations, but with 14,000 choices there’s a lot to experiment with.

This update began rolling out for Gboard beta users in October, but if you weren’t part of that beta, Google has now confirmed the update will be rolling out for all in the coming weeks. We don’t have a specific time just yet though.

It’ll be available to all those with Android devices running Android 6 and above, but it won’t be available on Gboard for iOS so iPhone users miss out on this one.

  • Amazon, Apple powering a shift away from Intel chips

For close to a decade, supporters of the chip technology that powers mobile phones vowed to shake up the market for computers. For the most part, they made little headway. Now that finally seems to be changing, in a potential power shift over the direction of the computer industry.

The change is being driven by Apple and Amazon, two tech behemoths that are cutting their dependence on the Intel chip technology that has long controlled most personal computers and larger server systems. Instead, the companies are increasingly leaning on their own homegrown chips that were designed using technology that Arm, the British company, licenses for smartphones and other consumer products.

Apple fired a salvo last month when it introduced new models of Mac computers that for the first time used its own Arm-based chips. In June, Amazon’s cloud computing business started marketing a new computing service based on its own Arm-based chips, telling customers the service was both faster and cheaper by one-fifth than its Intel-based offerings.

On Tuesday, Amazon unveiled a second computing service for businesses based on those same chips. It also discussed gains made by users of the first service that was introduced in June, such as Snap, maker of the Snapchat messaging app. Amazon added that Twitter plans to begin using the technology as part of a broadened relationship between the companies. “The larger the customer, the more excited they are,” said Peter DeSantis, who oversees computing infrastructure for Amazon Web Services.

The actions by Apple and Amazon are causing ripple effects across the $400 billion semiconductor industry. Their moves suggest that key decisions in chips may increasingly shift from silicon suppliers, where the power had long resided, to chip users with the resources to make their own components. For computer users, the moves may ultimately result in more technology choices, snappier computing speeds and lower costs.

“Everyone’s like, wow, Apple’s totally in; Amazon and others are in,” said Keith Kressin, a senior vice president at Qualcomm, a large supplier of Arm-based chips. “This is going to happen for real.”

Intel became a dominant force in computing in the 1990s, emerging as the biggest supplier of processors for PCs and later exploiting its high-volume manufacturing to make lower-priced chips for servers. But the company did not make chips for smartphones, which became hugely popular starting in 2007.

Enter Arm. The 30-year-old company, which Nvidia recently agreed to buy from SoftBank for $40 billion, delivered chips that used less power than Intel processors. That difference — which meant that mobile phones might run all day on a battery charge, rather than just a few hours — attracted makers of chips for mobile phones, such as Qualcomm.
