  • MP BJP to go into 2023 Assembly polls with ‘Abki baar, 200 paar’ slogan, eyes 51 per cent vote share

    By PTI

BHOPAL: Buoyed by the party’s resounding victory in Gujarat, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Madhya Pradesh has come up with ‘Abki baar, 200 paar’ slogan for the next year’s Assembly elections, setting the ambitious target of winning more than 200 seats in the 230-member House.

The saffron party, which has been in power in Madhya Pradesh for almost 20 years, also aims to garner 51 per cent votes in the polls that are due by the end of 2023.

“The party is setting the target of bagging 51 per cent vote share and winning more than 200 seats in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls next year,” state BJP chief V D Sharma told reporters on Saturday after emerging from the party’s executive committee meeting in Katni district of the state.

“Abki baar, 200 paar” (this elections, more than 200 seats), he said, adding that the party had received 53 per cent votes in Gujarat and rewritten history in that state with the landslide victory.

The BJP won 156 seats out of 182 seats in Gujarat, where elections were held on December 1 and 5, and broke the Congress’s 1985 record in that state – when Madhavsinh Solanki won 149 seats.

At the meeting, where MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other leaders were present, the party resolved to win more than 200 seats.

After 15 years in power, the BJP had lost the 2018 Assembly polls in MP, paving the way for the Congress to form a government under the leadership of Kamal Nath with the help of elected independents, MLAs from the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party.

However, a rebellion by nearly two dozen Congress MLAs loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia, a Union minister who is now in the BJP, led to the collapse of the Nath government in March 2020.

The BJP subsequently formed its government under the leadership of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

“In the last Assembly polls in MP, the Congress and independent candidates backed by it together won 114 seats, while the BJP had to be content with 107 seats,” senior journalist and political analyst Rakesh Dixit told PTI.

“In 2018, the saffron party garnered 41. 02 per cent votes, while the Congress managed to cobble up 40.89 per cent votes. The BJP had to sit in the opposition for 15 months until 22 Congress MLAs mostly loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia rebelled, paving the way for the return of the saffron party to power in MP,” he added.

  • MP: Congress leader calls for ‘killing’ PM Modi to save Constitution; govt orders FIR

    By PTI

BHIOPAL: A senior Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh has made a controversial remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking people to be prepared to “kill” Modi to save the Constitution and the future of minorities and Dalits.

The state government has ordered the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the Congress leader and former state minister, Raja Pateria, who made the remarks.

In a video that surfaced on social media on Monday morning, Pateria can be heard telling Congress workers, “be ready to kill Modi. Kill in the sense of defeating him”.

“Modi will end elections. Modi will divide on the basis of religion, caste and language. The future of Dalits, tribals and minorities is in danger. If you want to save the Constitution, then be ready to kill Modi. Kill in the sense of defeating him,” Pateria told a meeting of Congress workers at Pawai town in Panna district.

MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan targeted Congress over Pateria’s remarks, saying the reality of those who are undertaking the Bharat Jodo Yatra is coming to the fore.

“An FIR is being registered against him (Pateria) and the law will take its course,” he said.

After the video surfaced, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra told reporters Pateria’s statement against the prime minister is very objectionable and he was immediately directing the superintendent of police to register an FIR against the Congress leader.

Earlier, state BJP chief VD Sharma shared the video clip Pateria’s video and demanded an inquiry wondering if there is a plot to assassinate the prime minister.

“Former Minister Raja Pateria’s incitement of public and Congress workers to assassinate Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi is extremely serious and condemnable. Was there any preparation for this conspiracy in Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Todo Yatra from Madhya Pradesh recently? This should be investigated,” Sharma tweeted in Hindi.

Meanwhile, Pateria issued a video statement clarifying he meant to “defeat” PM Modi in the elections but his remarks were wrongly presented.

“A video related to a mandal meeting yesterday at Pawai has surfaced. I am a follower of Mahatma Gandhi who can’t talk about killing anyone. It was wrongly presented. I wanted to say defeat Modi to protect the Constitution, dalits, tribals and minorities and also to remove unemployment,” he said.

CM Chouhan said the “reality of those who are undertaking Bharat Jodo Yatra is coming to the fore”.

“Congress people are not able to compete with PM Narendra Modi in the field, that’s why a Congress leader is talking about killing him. This is the height of hatred. True feelings of Congress are being revealed. An FIR is being registered against him and law will take its course,” the chief minister said in a statement.

  • Time has come to implement Uniform Civil Cod in country: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

    By Express News Service

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh has become the latest BJP-ruled state to be actively considering implementing the Uniform Civil Code. Addressing a gathering of tribals in Barwani district on Thursday, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “I’m of the firm view that UCC should be implemented across the country.”

“Time has come for implementation of the UCC and one wife norm for everyone. Why should there be two sets of legislations/laws in the country. In Madhya Pradesh, I’m forming a committee (to study and implement UCC) and one marriage norm for everyone,” Chouhan said, while addressing the PESA Act new rules (implemented recently in MP) awareness event.

Interestingly, the stage of event from which the CM made the announcement, had among others, state’s animal husbandry minister Prem Singh Patel, who officially has four wives, as declared by him in his poll nomination affidavit filed during 2018 assembly elections.

Many BJP-ruled states, including Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Karnataka, have either formed committees for implementation of UCC or have supported the idea to implement it. The announcement suggests that the BJP is likely to make UCC a big issue ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha polls and MP elections due next year.

Recently when asked about several BJP-ruled state governments promising UCC, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had accused the BJP of just raising the issue for political advantage ahead of elections.

BHOPAL: After the Madhya Pradesh Economic Offences Wing found alleged misappropriation of funds by a bishop in Jabalpur and recovered cash from his house, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said it will be probed whether the money was being used for religious conversion or any other illegal activity.

The EOW conducted searches at the house of P C Singh, the bishop of the Church of North India Jabalpur Diocese, on Thursday morning following the registration of a case of cheating against him.

The agency had last month registered the case after he was accused of financial misconduct while running an educational society of which he is the chairman, officials have said.

During the searches, Rs 1.65 crore in cash, 18,342 US dollars, 118 UK Pound besides 48 bank accounts and documents of 17 properties among other assets, Chouhan said on Friday following a meeting related to the development.

“Irregularities and frauds have come to the fore on a large scale. The state government will get it investigated whether the money was being used for illegal purposes. It will also be investigated if the money was being used for religious conversions and other illegal works through the trust,” he said.

“All these cases are also being handed over to the EOW. Conversion or other illegal activities in the name of religion will not be tolerated at any cost,” the chief minister said.

Officials have said that preliminary investigation in the case had revealed that Rs 2.70 crore collected as fees from students by the society’s various institutions between 2004-05 and 2011-12 were allegedly transferred to religious institutions, misused and spent by the bishop for personal needs.

BHOPAL: Just four days after buying the national tricolour from a women self-help group in  Bhopal, the Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan travelled on a cruise in the Upper Lake in the state capital on Monday, as part of Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan.

Braving the continuous rain, Chouhan, carrying the national flag high in his hands, turned a patriotic singer, singing famous patriotic songs like ‘Apni azadi ko hum hargiz mita sakte nahin and Mera rang de basanti chola’ on the music played by the state police’s band.

Accompanied by school children (who also carried the national flags), Chouhan while waving the national flag, travelled atop the cruise on the lake, encouraging people for the success of Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan.

People lined up on the banks of the lake, which particularly included kids, waved to the CM as the cruise travelled on the lake through areas, including the VIP Road, Boat Club Road, Sheetal Das ki Bagia, Retghat and the Raja Bhoj Statue.

“The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is not just an act of hoisting the Tiranga, but it is a resolution that we should contribute maximum in the development of the nation. We should leave no stone unturned in performing our duty. Hoist the Tiranga yourself while hailing Mother India and inspire others to do the same,” the CM appealed to the people lined up on the road on the banks of the upper lake.

“The citizens of Madhya Pradesh have become emotionally attached to this campaign. Our Tiranga is our pride. We are remembering the martyrs, because they not only sacrificed their youth but their whole lives. Martyrs filled the land of India with the colour of their blood. India became independent. By remembering those martyrs, we are taking India on the path of progress according to their dreams.”

BHOPAL: The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh has ordered a probe into the commercial use of National Herald assets in Bhopal.

“Certainly a probe will be conducted as to whether the concerned property is being used commercially or not. If it’s found that the concerned property is being used commercially then the property will be sealed. Those using the property commercially will subsequently have to face strict action,,” state’s urban development and housing minister Bhupendra Singh said on Thursday.

He added that action will also be initiated against all those officials who helped in changing the land use of the concerned National Herald property (building).

Importantly, the Associated Journals Limited (AJL) — the company which earlier published the National Herald newspaper — had properties in multiple cities, including Delhi, Patna, Mumbai, Bhopal and Indore.

The concerned property in Bhopal is located in the Press Complex in Maharana Pratap (MP) Nagar.

Earlier in the day, the MP CM had justified ED’s action in the case, including the sealing of Young India’s office in Delhi.
