India legend Sachin Tendulkar was among the first notable figures to acknowledge the achievement on X (formerly Twitter). He also gave a new name to the off-spinner from Tamil Nadu. He tweeted: “500 Test wickets for a one-in-a-million bowler! In AshWIN the SpinNER, there was always a WINNER. 500 wickets is a huge milestone in Test cricket. Congratulations, Champion!”

    Ashwin also got congratulatory message from Indian film star Dhanush. He tweeted: “Congratulations @ashwinravi99 on this incredible achievement. Thank you for making us proud.”

    Having made his Test debut in 2011, Ashwin has come a long way.The engineering graduate from Chennai started out as a top-order batter and tried his hand at medium pace bowling before settling for the role of an off-spinner, a decision that was forced by a back injury during his teenage years.

    Following the Kumble and Harbhajan Singh era, Ashwin had big shoes to fill and he has done that with remarkable consistency. In his first 16 Tests, Ashwin snared nine five-wicket hauls and became the fastest to the 300 wickets club.Ashwin has also proved his worth in the shorter formats, having played 116 ODIS for his 156 wickets in the format.     NEW DELHI: Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar will on Wednesday be designated as a “national icon” of the Election Commission (EC) to encourage greater voter participation in the electoral process.

    A memorandum of understanding will be signed between Tendulkar and the poll panel here on Wednesday.

    As part of the three-year agreement, Tendulkar will spread voter awareness.

    “This collaboration would mark a significant step towards leveraging Tendulkar’s unparalleled impact with the youth for increasing voters’ participation in the forthcoming elections, especially in general elections (to Lok Sabha), 2024,” the EC said in a statement.

    Through the partnership, the EC seeks to address the challenges of urban and youth apathy towards voting.

    The EC has been associating itself with renowned Indians from various fields by designating them as its “national icons” to motivate voters to participate in the electoral process.

    Last year, the commission recognised actor Pankaj Tripathi as a national icon.

    Earlier, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, stalwarts such as MS Dhoni, Aamir Khan and Mary Kom had been the EC’s national icons.

    Before entering the playing field at Holkar Stadium, Tendulkar spoke to the children, who were seeing a game live for the first time, and told them real winners are those who find solutions to the challenges of life, it added.

    The release said Tendulkar is working closely with Vinayak Lohani’s Parivar Foundation for the betterment of tribal children in remote areas of Madhya Pradesh through STF.

    NEW DELHI: The bonhomie between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Boris Johnson was palpable at a media event here on Friday with the UK PM referring to Modi as “khaas dost (special friend)” and calling him by his first name multiple times.

    Johnson also appreciated the welcome he received in India, especially in Gujarat, saying he felt a bit like Sachin Tendulkar and his face was ubiquitous like Amitabh Bachchan.

    Addressing a joint press event with Modi, “Thank you my friend Narendra, my Khaas dost is the phrase I would (like to) use in Hindi. We have had a fantastic two days here in India.”

    “Yesterday I became the first conservative prime minister to visit Gujarat, which is your birth place of course Narendra, but as you just said the ancestral home of about half of all the British Indians and I had an amazing reception, absolutely amazing, I felt a bit like Sachin Tendulkar and my face was ubiquitous everywhere as Amitabh Bachchan. I was everywhere to be seen and it was fantastic,” Johnson said.

    “This morning we have had wonderful talks and they have strengthened our relationship every way,” he said.

    Johnson said in challenging times it is important that we, the “khaas dost”, get closer together.

    “I believe the partnership between the UK and India, one of the oldest democracies and the largest democracies, is certainly the most defining of our times,” he said.

    Johnson arrived in Ahmedabad on Thursday as part of his two-day India trip and visited the famous Sabarmati Ashram and met industrialist Gautam Adani.

    In the backdrop of the rapid geopolitical turmoil, Prime Minister Modi and his British counterpart Johnson agreed on a new and expanded India-UK defence partnership and vowed to seal an ambitious free trade agreement by the end of the year.
