    By Express News Service

NEW DELHI:  The Indian Navy’s latest indigenous guided stealth missile destroyer, Mormugao would be be commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai on December 18. Mormugao was built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDSL) as part of the Project 15B destroyers or the Visakhapatnam-class. On November 24, the MDSL delivered the ship to the Indian Navy. The event marks the formal induction of the two of the four Visakhapatnam-class destroyers.

“The ships under this project will have 75 percent indigenous content and this includes weapons and sensors also,” according to sources. Not only the indigenous content has gone up with the subsequent projects, it has also led to speed up into the construction period. The 15B is the third such indigenous project to manufacture modern destroyers with Project 15 (Delhi Class) having 42 percent indigenous content which was raised to 57 percent in the Project 15A (Kolkata Class).

Mormugao is packed with sophisticated ‘state of the art’ weapons and sensors such as Surface to Surface Missile and Surface to Air Missiles. The ship is fitted with a modern Surveillance Radar which provides target data to the gunnery weapon systems of the ship.

  • Opposition walks out of Rajya Sabha over demand for debate on Chinese border attack

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The entire opposition led by the Congress on Wednesday staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha after their demand for a discussion on the Chinese aggression on the border was disallowed.

Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the opposition parties wanted a debate to get full information on the Chinese aggression and encroachment on Indian territory, and that they stand by the Army and the country.

But Deputy Chairman Harivansh said there was no notice before the Chair and a debate cannot be allowed on the issue.

Opposition MPs shouted slogans for some time before staging a walkout. Those who walked out included MPs of Congress, Left, TMC, NCP, RJD, SP, JMM, and Shiv Sena.

Earlier Kharge said opposition parties want a “detailed discussion in the House” on the Chinese aggression and encroachment at borders.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in his statement on the clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Tawang sector hasn’t informed of the actual situation on the border.

“Our effort from the start has been that we get full information and the country is also informed of what the actual situation there is,” he said, adding there was some information that China has built bridges on vacant land.

Harivansh said there is no notice given by any of the opposition parties on the issue.

“There is no permission for discussion,” he said, and called for taking up the listed zero-hour submissions.

Kharge continued to speak but his mike was switched off.

“We are for the country. We are with the army,” he said.

Thereafter, the opposition MPs started raising slogans.

The Deputy Chairman said he had on Tuesday stated that clarifications on Defence Minister’s statements were not allowed as it was a sensitive issue.

Not satisfied, the opposition MPs staged a walkout.

  • Rajnath Singh’s statement on Arunachal clash incomplete, Modi govt hiding truth: Congress

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement in Parliament on the Sino-India border clash in Tawang was “incomplete” and accused the government of hiding the truth from the nation.

Congress spokesperson and deputy leader of the party in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi demanded that the government should tell the truth and not divert public attention by raising other issues like cancellation of FCRA registration of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

Gogoi and party leader Pawan Khera also accused the government of diplomatic failure with China, claiming that India has lost its pre-eminent position in Southeast Asia.

Both the leaders demanded that the government should agree to a detailed discussion on the border situation and ties with China, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks made in June 2020 that “no one has entered Indian territory nor has anyone occupied its territory” has emboldened China to indulge in such misadventures.

“Why did Rajnath Singh give a statement so late as the incident is of December 9. Why was this not given yesterday in Parliament? What are they hiding this? This government wants to hide the truth from the nation and our demand from day one has been to tell the truth to the nation,” Gogoi told reporters at a press conference.

He said the Congress is concerned about the security of the nation and that is why it was asking questions to the government.

“Rajnath Singh may be wanting to provide more information but his voice has also been silenced by the Prime minister. That is why the minister’s statement is incomplete. Our questions were valid,” he said.

He alleged that whenever an issue of national security comes up, the “prime minister hides behind his ministers”.

Asking why Parliament was deliberately kept in the dark, Gogoi said that is why the Congress staged a walkout after Singh’s statement in Lok Sabha and later in Rajya Sabha.

“The BJP government is not able to protect the territorial integrity of our country. They do not have the time to think about the country except elections and doing communal politics,” he said, adding that we have to prepare a united strategy after taking everyone together but there is no time for it with this government.

He also accused the government of “diplomatic failure” and that is why China is indulging in such clashes along the border.

“Modi ji, dariye mat. (Don’t be afraid). Name China and assure the country that what he said earlier was wrong and spell out how India plans to take on this challenge strongly,” Gogoi said.

Taking on Home Minister Amit Shah, Khera said he was making allegations against the Congress but should answer why the BJP was taking the help of UC News Mobile and ShareIt in 2019 elections.

“The accounts of Rajiv Gandhi foundation are in public domain and there is nothing to hide about them. But what are the RSS ties with China’s communist party and why they knock at China’s doors and why it has a tie up with CPC. Even when they are not in power, the BJP goes there to get lessons from China.

What are India Foundation and Vivekanand Foundation’s relations with China, the Home minister should tell,” he said.

Khera also demanded that the government should make public details of the PM Cares fund and tell which Chinese companies have given donations to it.

“We want to know what is the secret of Modi ji giving a clean chit to China in 2020. We are concerned about the country’s integrity and its borders. The Congress leader said the government has allowed the Chinese to understand your weakness and that is why failure on your diplomacy. You should have left diplomacy to diplomats. This is the diplomatic failure, as neither can we ask questions from Raksha Mantri, nor from external affairs ministry or anyone else. The Prime Minister is clearly responsible for this as he gave the clean chit to China. China has not only disturbed the status quo and we are asking the government to fight China but you are here fighting with us. This is the diplomatic failure,” Khera asserted.

Asked what he meant by India’s diplomatic failure, Gogoi said, “If it was a success, China would not have shown this courage. We have failed on diplomacy with China. The failure of this government to impose high costs on Chinese misadventure is the number one failure. Number two failure is that you are tying your Army’s hands behind their back and asking them to go back from their own territory. There is a demand for pre-Galwan status quo, but you have dropped the demand. Thirdly, you are seeing a distance between you and your allies, especially in South Asia. Under Prime Minister Modi, India has lost her pre-eminent position in South Asia. Even on economic ad diplomatic front,” the Congress MP from Assam said.

He, however, said the government does not have the time to consider this issue and urged it to show transparency.

“We have been seeking a holistic discussion on China. Prime Minister should hold another round of talks and admit to mistakes. The country gives importance to national security,” he said, adding that the government is answerable to the country and the government should reply to the nation and tell the truth.

Gogoi also asked why the Indian government is making compromises at the border by signing disengagement agreements and creating buffer zones and that is why China is getting the courage to indulge in such misadventures as done in Tawang on Friday.

He claimed that by doing so, China wants that buffer zones are created in north eastern sector.

“If India has to give reply to China’s misadventure, then India will have to engage with South East Asia. But, the effort is to divert the attention of the country. We are facing such a challenge and if we do not respond to it unitedly, we will have to face the consequences in future and PM Modi will have to take the entire responsibility.”

Khera said in 1962, as many as 165 MPs participated in the discussion on China when even our MPs criticised our government then and Nehru ji listened. “But, look at this government they attack us when we ask them questions.”

  • India doesn’t believe in world order where few are considered superior to others: Rajnath Singh

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Friday said India doesn’t believe in a world order where a few are considered superior to others and asserted the country’s actions are guided by the essence of human equality and dignity that is part of its ancient ethos.

In his address at the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD) 2022 held here, he also said India has always seen security and prosperity as a “collective pursuit” of the entire humankind.

“It is my firm belief that if security becomes a truly collective enterprise, then we can think of creating a global order that is beneficial for all of us,” Singh said.

The defence minister said that now “we require to elevate the paradigm of collective security” to a level of shared interests and shared security.

“India believes in a multi-aligned policy which is realised through diverse engagements through multiple stakeholders so that views and concerns of all can be discussed and addressed for prosperity for all,” Singh said.

To talk of the security paradigm, national security should not be considered a zero-sum game, and “we should strive to create a win-win situation for all,” he added.

The defence minister also asserted that “a strong, prosperous India wouldn’t be built at cost of others. Rather, India is here to help other nations realise their full potential”.

  • India does not provoke any country, but…: Rajnath Singh

    By Express News Service

UDUPI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that India does not provoke any country, but it will not spare anyone who tries to disturb its unity and integrity.Singh was speaking at the 30th convocation of MAHE, Manipal, in Udupi on Friday.

On the country’s economy, Rajnath said that India is poised to become the ‘number one’ economy by 2047, and find its name in the list of world’s top three economies in the next five years.

He urged the youth to continue to innovate, develop new technologies and set up research establishments and startup ventures across the country to realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant New India.

Rajnath said that students should inculcate an attitude to make India a strong nation. He asserted that the global powers are acknowledging the capacity of India’s young ignited minds, as major companies like Google, Microsoft, Adobe and IBM are hiring Indians for top positions. ‘’If Indians can help major firms grow across the globe, why can not we think of setting up top companies back home?” the Defense Minister pointed out, calling upon the graduating students to introspect and bring a paradigm change in the nation.

Prime Minister Modi is now heard with attention and seriousness on international platforms by global leaders as India is now leading the world on issues like terrorism and has been successful in garnering support to root out the menace of terrorism, Rajnath said.

The countries that nurture and support terrorism are now aware of India’s ability of giving them an answer, he added.

Describing the present era as knowledge-intensive and constantly-evolving, the minister stressed on the need for upgrading the quality and quantity of human capital, which he said plays a major role in the nation’s development. Technological capabilities and innovative approach of the young generation is the most decisive factor in taking the nation forward, he said. “Before 2014, there were only about 400 to 500 startups. Today, the number has crossed 70,000. Of these, over 100 have become Unicorns,” he added.

  • On J&K merger day, Rajnath aims for PoK

    Express News Service

SRINAGAR:  On the 75th anniversary of Jammu & Kashmir’s Accession with India, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday in a clear message to Pakistan said the Modi government’s aim is to implement the February 22, 1994 resolution of the Indian Parliament to reclaim the Gilgit and Baltistan and PoK, which is under the occupation of Pakistan.

“I want to question Pakistan that under our areas (PoK) that is illegally under its occupation, what rights has it given to people living there? We know how much Pakistan, which sheds crocodile tears in the name of human rights, cares about the human rights of the people in those areas.  Every day, we hear news about atrocities on these innocent Indian people,” Rajnath, said while addressing the 76th Infantry Day programme at Budgam.

He was here to attend the ‘Shaurya Diwas’ celebrations of the Indian Army to commemorate the air-landed operations of the Indian Army at Budgam Airport in 1947 to take on the tribal raiders of Pakistan.Taking a dig at Pakistan, the defence minister said that history is witness that those rulers and states who committed atrocities on their people had to pay for it.  “Pakistan, which is sowing the seeds of atrocities in PoK, will have to face thorns in future. We are pained by the sufferings of PoK people. In the times to come, Pakistan will face the consequences of its atrocities”.

Rajnath said that J&K and Ladakh are on the path of progress and development and touching new heights after Article 370 revocation on August 5, 2019. “We have just started the development process of these areas. We have just started walking and our yatra will be completed when we implement the unanimous resolution passed in the Indian Parliament on February 22, 1994 about PoK to reclaim Gilgit Baltistan and other areas under the occupation of Pakistan. Our aim is to implement Parliament’s resolution to reclaim remaining parts of Kashmir from Pakistan,” the defence minister said. “Our yatra will complete when all refugees of 1947 get justice and get their land and homes back with honour”.

“The day is not far away when these resolutions too will be realised,” he asserted. Referring to Article 370 revocation, Rajnath said that on August 5, 2019, J&K was fully integrated with the country and it brought a new dawn here. “After Article 370 revocation, our government showed to people that our talks and deeds are the same and whatever we promise, we fully implement. We were committed to the integration of J&K with the country and people reposed their trust in us with the passage of time, we succeeded in fully integration of J&K with India,” he said.

He said that before Article 370 revocation, some anti-India elements used to disturb peace and harmony in the name of religion but now there is peace and tranquillity in J&K due to persistent efforts by the government and armed forces.

On October 27, 1947, the Indian Army was inducted by the Indian Air Force at Budgam Airport to evict Pakistani forces and tribal raiders from J&K, a day after the “Instrument of Accession” was signed between Maharaja Hari Singh and the Republic of India. During the Thursday event, the replication of the event was organised to pay homage to soldiers and people of J&K.

Before the Article 370 revocation, the shutdown used to be observed in Valley on the call of separatists but no call for strike was given this year and people did their normal chorus of life.

Taking a dig at Pakistan, the defence minister said that history is witness that those rulers and states who committed atrocities on their people had to pay for it.

We were committed to the integration of J&K with the country and people reposed their trust in us with the passage of time, we succeeded in fully
integration of J&K with India,” he said.

  • Rajnath lauds heroes of 1947 war, crucial role played by J&K people

SRINAGAR: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday heaped praises on the heroes of the 1947 war and also commended the crucial contribution made by the people of Jammu and Kashmir in driving out Pakistani infiltrators to protect the territorial integrity of the country.

In his address at an event held at the old airfield, Srinagar to mark the 75th anniversary of the Infantry Day, he also said “traits of new-born Pakistan could be seen from its nascent stage only”.

Exactly 75 years ago, troops of the Indian Army’s 1 Sikh Regiment had arrived at the old airfield of Srinagar, carried in Dakota aircraft, to protect Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistani forces, a day after its then Maharaja Hari Singh signed the ‘instrument of accession’ on October 26, 1947.

“The bloody tale of the Partition that was written in 1947, and even its ink had not dried, and a new script of betrayal began to be written by Pakistan. Shortly after the Partition, the character of Pakistan came to the fore, which could never be imagined,” Singh said.

Talks on Jammu and Kashmir integration with India was going on when on October 22, 1947, Pakistan attacked J&K.

“The Kabalis were not wearing a military uniform, but they carried guns, mortars, and other combat equipment,” the defence minister said.

“From Domal and Muzaffarabad, they moved to Peer Panjal Hills in their attacks. Maharaja Hari Singh was in a fix over the situation as these Pakistani infiltrators plundered, killed and wreaked havoc,” he said.

But, these infiltrators could not succeed against the iron grit and bravery of “our soldiers”, many of whom made the supreme sacrifice while fighting to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country, the minister added.

Singh in his address asserted that despite a number of stumbling blocks, India has risen time and again, because of the “courage and sacrifice of our soldiers” and today the edifice of India stands tall on the strong foundation laid by them.

“The greatest glory, as they say, is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. The incident of 1947 is one such instance,” he said.

Some of the key scenes of the historic landings of the Indian Army troops were reenacted at old airfield, Srinagar, in the presence of Singh, to pay tribute to the brave soldiers and people of Jammu and Kashmir who laid down their lives, and also to honour the next of kin of war heroes who participated in the 1947-48 war.

Under command of Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai, who later laid down his life at Baramulla, the course of the war changed, wherein people and soldiers of State Forces of Jammu and Kashmir and the Indian Army fought alongside valiantly, to evict Pakistani forces, driving them out of most of Jammu and Kashmir till ceasefire on January 5, 1949.

Singh also extolled the valour of the first Param Vir Chakra recipient, Maj Somnath Sharma, who despite being injured led a company and saved the Srinagar airfield from enemy clutches and in the process made the supreme sacrifice.

He also paid glowing tributes to the bravery of other gallantry award winners such as Brig Rajinder Singh and Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai.

Major Somnath Sharma, who was there with his men “till his last bullet and last breath”, and other heroes will always remain a source of inspiration for every Indian and the nation will forever be indebted to their sacrifices, the defence minister said.

“Here, I would also like to remember former Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik, who was also a skilled pilot, and made a valuable contribution to the movement of the troops during the war.

He may have belonged to different political views, but his contribution to national security will always be remembered, ” the minister said.

He commended the crucial role played by the people of J&K who helped the armed forces in forcing the enemies to retreat, saying, the help rendered by “Kashmiri brothers and sisters deserves fulsome praise”.

Singh termed the campaign of October 27, 1947 as the one for safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity as well as the safety of the people.

It was a campaign to protect the dreams and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he said.

“On October 27, 1947, Indian Army came through aerial and road routes to Budgam for saving the country’s honour and prestige,” he said.

At the venue, huge cut-outs of Brig Rajinder Singh, Brig Mohd Usman, Maj Somnath Sharma and Maqbool Sherwani were mounted, and ‘Shaurya Diwas’ posters were also put up.

“These bravehearts played ‘Holi’ with blood in fields of saffron. Three days ago, it was Diwali, so in 1947 too, it must have been near Diwali. And, many laid their lives protecting Jammu and Kashmir against Pakistani forces,” he said.

Singh also said that Pakistan is fully responsible for inhuman incidents against innocent people in PoK.

“We are moving forward with the spirit of unity. We must resolve to fight together against any divisive forces which may come in the way of our development in the future,” he said.

  • Decision on PoK should have been taken during 1971 Indo-Pak war: Rajnath Singh

    By PTI

SHIMLA: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that decision on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) should have been taken during 1971 war between India and the neighbouring country.

The defence minister said this while addressing a function to honour martyrs’ families at Badoli in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

“We have recently marked the Golden Jubilee of victory of 1971 war. The 1971 war will be remembered in history as the war fought for humanity instead of property, possession or power,” Singh said.

“There is only one regret. The decision on PoK should have been taken at that time itself,” he said.

Singh also attended a similar function at Nadaun in Hamirpur district.

In Kangra, Singh also shed light on the Centre’s unwavering resolve to make the country ‘Aatmanirbhar’ and the progress achieved due to the measures taken to realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.

“Earlier, India was known as a defence importer. Today, it is among one of the top 25 defence exporters in the world. From about Rs 900 crore eight years ago, defence exports have crossed Rs 13,000 crore. We are hopeful that the defence exports will touch Rs 35,000 crore by 2025 and the target of Rs 2.7 lakh crore set for 2047 will be met,” he said.

While maintaining that India has never attacked any country, nor has it captured an inch of a foreign land, he assured the nation that if any attempt is ever made to disturb the harmony in India, a befitting reply will be given.

“India is a peace-loving country, but it should not be mistaken for being a coward or afraid of war. At a time when we were dealing with COVID-19, we had to face the tension on the northern border with China. The courage of our soldiers during the Galwan incident proved that no matter how big the power is, India will never bow down,” he said.

Singh said that the formation of the post of ‘chief of defence staff and the setting up of the department of military affairs are some of the major reforms taken to bolster national security.

“Doors of National Defence Academy (NDA) have been opened for girls, while women in the Armed Forces are being given a permanent commission. We have also allowed the deployment of women on warships,” he said.

Singh stressed that the government is building a ‘New India’, which will give a sense of security and trust to all our peace-loving friendly countries and those with evil intentions will get nothing but dust.

During the 2016 surgical strikes and 2019 Balakot air strikes, the defence minister stated that India’s new strategy against terrorism has broken the backs of those who try to hurt the unity and integrity of the nation.

“Terror activities were carried out from Pakistan under a well-thought-out policy. After the Uri and Pulwama attacks, our government and the Armed Forces, through the 2016 surgical strikes and 2019 Balakot air strikes, displayed to the world India’s unwavering commitment to root out terrorism. We showed that our forces have the capability to act on this side and, if needed, on the other side of the border. India’s image has been transformed. It is now seriously listened to on international platforms,” he said.

The defence minister was of the view that the inspiration taken from the heroes of the Armed Forces is the reason behind India moving swiftly forward on the path of development.

“When the dark clouds of war appear and national interests are attacked, it is the soldiers who bear that attack and protect the country. It is the supreme sacrifice of the fallen heroes which keeps the people alive,” he stated.

“The names of General Sam Manekshaw, General Jagjit Singh Arora, General Jacob, General Sujan Singh Uban and General Officer in Command Air Marshal Latif, who led India to a resounding victory, will never be forgotten. Indian soldiers in the war included Hindus, Muslims, Parsis, Sikhs and one Jew. It is proof of India’s belief toward Sarvadharma Sambhav (respect for all religions). All these brave soldiers belonged to different states with different mother tongues. They were bound by a strong and common thread of Indianness,” he said.

Singh termed Himachal Pradesh as a border state strategically important for India and the people residing in the border areas as strategic assets.

While emphasising that it is the responsibility of every government to make their lives better, he stated strengthening the border infrastructure as well as the intelligence and communication capability of the country has been accorded top priority by the government, led by Prime Minister Modi.

He pointed out that hundreds of kms of roads, bridges and tunnels have been constructed in the border areas, with Atal tunnel in Himachal Pradesh being one of the mega projects.

Singh paid respects to the families of the war heroes, stating that the country will forever be indebted to the sacrifices made by the valiant soldiers.

He said the Armed Forces will always be a source of inspiration to the people, especially the youth, as they possess the traits of discipline, devotion to duty, patriotism and sacrifice, and are a symbol of national pride and trust.

“Background, religion and creed don’t matter, what matters is that our beloved tri-colour continues to fly high,” he said.

The defence minister paid glowing tributes to the war heroes, including first recipient of Param Vir Chakra Major Somnath Sharma (1947); Brigadier Sher Jung Thapa, Maha Vir Chakra (1948); Lt Col Dhan Singh Thapa, PVC (1962); Captain Vikram Batra, PVC (1999) and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, PVC (1999).

On this occasion, Singh felicitated the families of the brave soldiers of the Armed Forces hailing from Himachal Pradesh, who laid down their lives in the service of the nation.
