  • ‘No vested right’: Court asks AAP MP Raghav Chadha to vacate Type 7 govt bungalow

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has ordered that Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha has no vested right to continue to occupy his government bungalow after the cancellation of its allotment.

Additional District Judge Sudhanshu Kaushik has vacated an earlier order that stopped the Rajya Sabha Secretariat from evicting Chadha from his government accommodation.

“Plaintiff (Chadha) cannot claim that he has an absolute right to continue to occupy the accommodation during his entire tenure as a Member of Rajya Sabha. The allotment of Government accommodation is only a privilege given to the plaintiff and he has no vested right to continue to occupy the same even after the cancellation of allotment,” said the order.

Earlier in June, the Rajya Sabha secretariat was directed by the court not to evict him from a Type-7 bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi, which is usually allotted to lawmakers who are former ministers, chief ministers or governors, till the pendency of his application and without following the due process of law.

“.. the argument that the accommodation once made to a Member of Parliament cannot be canceled under any circumstances during the entire tenure of Member of Parliament deserves rejection,” the court clarified in the order.

Emphasising that Chadha has “no vested right in the accommodation and his status is akin to that of a licensee”, the court said it “can be revoked by the competent authority at any time.”

Earlier, Chadha had moved the court, stating the cancellation of the allotment of his Type VII bungalow on Pandara Road, New Delhi, did not follow due process of law, was arbitrary, and that no reasons were provided for it.

It was claimed by the AAP leader that for removing an MP from the bungalow, reasons must be provided in the letter of allotment. While appealing against the eviction, Chadhar had prayed that he was residing with his parents.

  • Agnipath: AAP MP writes to Defence Minister, seeks immediate rollback of scheme

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Saturday urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to “immediately” roll back the Agnipath scheme and resume the regular process of recruitment for defence services for the current year, saying the new recruitment plan has “justifiably” caused “great anguish” among the potential recruits across the country.

In a letter to the Defence Minister, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader listed a host of deficiencies in the Agnipath scheme and said it negates “regimental honour” and “erodes the quality of our troops”.

“Unity and coordination amongst troops is what drives our armed forces towards excellence, and with a shorter duration spent with their peers, we are sacrificing the spirit of the forces,” he said.

It is the ethos of the regiment that keep jawans united and determined, he said, adding, “Any recruitment scheme must respect the regimental honour and ethos built into the system which has been bringing laurels to the country.

” Chadha said the Union government, while formulating the Agnipath scheme, “failed” to comprehend that a jawan supports not only himself but his family as well.

“Only individuals with courage and peace of mind can serve the armed forces. A jawan that is busy contemplating career moves or wondering how his family will survive after his tenure of four years is over, will find it harder to serve our country,” he said.

An “ill-motivated soldier” is certainly an avoidable proposition, he added.

The AAP MP said the new recruitment scheme has “overlooked” the issues of inadequate skilling.

“The Agnipath scheme allows for Agniveers to undergo a crash course in training of six months. An abnormally short period of training will have adverse consequences on the quality of service discharged,” he contended.

He said the scheme allows for greenhorns to face the nation’s greatest security challenges.

“Resultantly, we will be saddled without sufficient leadership and experience amongst the troops,” he added.

Chadha said the Union government’s financial obligations towards the defence pension bill should not be offset by sacrificing the job security of the jawans.

“We cannot shy away from our collective responsibility to give those who protect our borders a life of dignity. It is the least we can do for our jawans. This cannot be our solution to budgetary woes,” he said, adding, “Lives cannot be put at stake to balance the budget.”

Noting that the scheme has been brought in without first implementing it as a pilot, the AAP MP said such “experiments” should not be imposed “en masse”.

“Pilot schemes, preferably outside of the armed forces, would have provided an opportunity to deliberate before deciding,” he argued.

A consultative exercise could have followed thereafter to avoid “national embarrassment” and despair amongst the youth, he added.

AAP MP said the Union government should start with “an immediate” rollback, and a resumption of the regular recruitment process for the current year, taking note of the points that he has raised.

“With all humility at my command, I implore you to roll back the Agnipath scheme, to stop this ‘trial by fire’ of the youth of the country,” Chadha said in his letter to the Defence Minister.

The rollback of the scheme should give the Union government “sufficient time” to rethink and consult the aspirants “who are affected the most by this sudden decision”, he said.

“We are experiencing a great deficit in new recruits, and shortcuts that put our jawans at risk cannot be the solution. We cannot make the opportunity to serve the country in the armed forces a secondary option for anyone,” the AAP leader added.

  • Punjab polls 2022: AAP CM candidate Bhagwant Mann meets Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: A day after the Aam Aadmi Party’s stupendous victory in Punjab, its chief ministerial face Bhagwant Mann met Delhi chief minister and party national convener Arvind Kejriwal at his residence here on Friday.

Mann arrived in the national capital this morning. This is Mann’s first meeting with Kejriwal after the assembly election results were declared on Thursday. AAP leader Raghav Chadha, who has been overseeing the party’s Punjab affairs, was also present in the meeting.

The Aam Aadmi Party romped home in 92 of the 117 assembly seats. Mann won from the Dhuri seat by a huge margin of 58,206 votes. Talking to reporters in Sangrur before leaving for the national capital, Mann said he would meet Kejriwal to congratulate him on the party’s victory in Punjab elections.

Mann has said the oath-taking ceremony will be held at Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in Nawanshahr district. On the party’s resounding poll victory, Mann said, “The people defeated arrogant persons and they made the common people victorious.”

  • Punjab CM, BJP cutting deal over BSF jurisdiction: AAP

    By Express News Service

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday accused Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Channi of “cutting a deal” with the Bhartiya Janata Party over the extension of BSF jurisdiction in the border state. AAP’s Punjab unit co-incharge Raghav Chadha, while calling it a “mockery of the mandate”, claimed that even though 3,000 kg heroin was seized in Gujarat, the BSF’s jurisdiction in the state was decreased by 37.5 per cent. However, it was increased in Punjab for “no reason”. With the new arrangement, the entire Majha region and most of Malwa and Doab will now be under “BJP’s jurisdiction”, he claimed.

“Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has voluntarily handed over the key to 50 per cent of Punjab to Narendra Modi. He pretty much gave away 50 per cent of the territorial jurisdiction and happily placed 100 per cent federalism at the PM’s feet,” said Chadha attacking the new chief minister of Punjab. The AAP, which will be fighting assembly polls in the state next year, has been hitting out at both Congress and Siromani Akali Dal, and presenting itself as the best alternative for Punjab.

It has a good presence in the state and party supremo Arvind Kejriwal has been visiting the state in the past few months, making promises of providing good governance based on ‘Delhi Model’ if voted to power. Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) extended the jurisdiction of BSF up to 50 km within the international border in Punjab, West Bengal and Assam. The BSF’s powers, which include arrest, search and seizures, were limited to 15 km in these states.

  • AAP’s CM candidate for Punjab will be pride of state: Raghav Chadha

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party’s Punjab chief ministerial candidate will hail from the state and will be somebody who can be called the pride of the state, party leader Raghav Chadha said.

With assembly polls in Punjab set for early next year, the AAP is going all out to win the battle and has already promised free 300 units of power to the people of the state if it forms the next government.

Chadha, the AAP’s Punjab co-in charge, told PTI in an interview that people of the state want to give the Arvind Kejriwal led party a chance in the next polls as the Akali Dal has become “irrelevant”, while the Congress has been the most “nikami sarkar” (useless government) ever in the history of electoral politics of Punjab.

He said the chief ministerial candidate of the party for Punjab will be decided by the political affairs committee in due course of time.

On chances of AAP MP and Party’s Punjab unit president Bhagwant Mann being chosen, he said at this point and time, “I can only say three characteristics of the CM candidate of AAP. One is that he will hail from the state of Punjab, he will be from the 2.8 crore population of Punjab and thirdly he will be somebody who can be called the ‘aan baan shaan’ (pride) of Punjab.

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal in June had said that the party’s chief ministerial face for the 2022 Punjab assembly polls would be from the Sikh community.

Over reports that Mann’s supporters want that he should be named as the CM candidate, Chadha said, “All are supporters of Kejriwal and of the Kejriwal model of governance.

I don’t wish to comment on individuals but the vote is for Jhaadu (party’s sign) and for Kejriwal”.

Several AAP volunteers in Sangrur and Barnala districts are holding meetings to press the party leadership to choose Mann as the chief ministerial face, sources in the party said.

Talking about the political situation of Punjab, Chadha claimed that the Akali Dal is slowly becoming “irrelevant” because people have “utmost hatred” for the party of Badals and want it to be defeated.

As far as the Congress is concerned, it is on a “suicide mission and on self destruction mode” and they do not need an opposition.

They are their own opposition and people are just waiting for the AAP and for elections to happen, he said.

On Amarinder Singh’s resignation from the chief minister’s post on Saturday, Chadha has said that governance in Punjab has been the biggest casualty in the Congress party’s ”Game of Thrones”.

“The people of Punjab are yearning for a change.

They feel they have tried everyone and now only AAP is their hope and they wish to try AAP, they wish to vote for AAP and are banking heavily on the Kejriwal model of governance in Delhi that was showcased in the last six years,” he said.

Chadha said when he asks people of the state who they will vote for in the next polls, they reply that this time they want to give a chance to AAP.

On the impact of the ongoing farmer’s protest on the polls, Chadha alleged that all three parties – BJP, Congress and Akali Dal – have “betrayed” the Indian farmers and “backstabbed” them “I don’t look at the farmers protest through the prism of politics and it would be unfair for anyone to do that but I can most certainly say that the BJP is not even a player in Punjab because of enacting these three laws.

Akali Dal is hated because they were the people who brought this law as Harsimrat Kaur Badal being the minister in the Union Cabinet proposed this legislation and Captain (Amarinder Singh) is also hated because he was part of the drafting committee of these laws,” he said.

“The AAP and its leader Arvind Kejriwal have stood with the farmers throughout and have been rock solid behind them and will work for the welfare of the farming community and their uplift,” he said.

Asked if the AAP will be benefited by the vote bank of Akali Dal, he claimed that everyone will be voting for the AAP not just those who are traditionally Akali Dal or Congress voters.

“This time all these divisions and classifications are not going to work.

Just like when elections happen in, Delhi people from all caste, creed and religion vote for Arvind Kejriwal.

Similarly, they will vote for Kejriwal in Punjab,” he said.

Talking about the party’s vision for Punjab, Chadha said reforms that have been carried out in the national capital will also be carried out in Punjab.

“With utmost sincerity and dedication we will work work towards making Punjab ‘khush haal’ (happy) and achieving our dream of ‘rangla Punjab’ (vibrant and colourful) by solving the problem of unemployment, debt trap of the state, uplift farmers and giving them their due, working for the landless labourers, ease of doing business for the business community and the traders, reforming completely the electricity and the water sector,” he said.

The party will also strive to bring to Punjab world class education in primary and secondary schools as well as an affordable and accessible healthcare system.

In 2017, the AAP had emerged as the main opposition party in the state after winning 20 out of the 117 assembly seats.

The Congress had won 77 while an alliance of Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP won 18 seats.

Assembly polls in Punjab are scheduled for 2022.

  • AAP MLA Raghav Chadha kicks up row after calling Navjot Singh Sidhu ‘Rakhi Sawant of Punjab politics’

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: AAP MLA Raghav Chadha on Friday called Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu “Rakhi Sawant of Punjab politics” over his criticism of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, drawing the ire of netizens who slammed him for his “misogynist” comment.

“The Rakhi Sawant of Punjab politics -Navjot Singh Sidhu- has received a scolding from Congress high command for a nonstop rant against Capt. Therefore today, for a change, he went after Arvind Kejriwal. Wait till tomorrow for he shall resume his diatribe against Capt with vehemence,” Chadha tweeted, tagging a video of Sidhu criticising the Delhi government for “notifying the Centre’s farm laws”.

Sidhu had in the video said, “Exploitation of farmers and decreasing prices even on crops where MSP is announced–Arvind Kejriwal you notified the Private Mandi’s central black law! Has it been de-notified or the masquerading is still going on?” Soon after Chadha’s tweet, actor Rakhi Swant started trending on the microblogging site as netizens came out in her support and slammed the AAP MLA for the comparison.

Alka Lamba, former AAP member and now with the Congress, said Chadha’s comments showed the mentality of the ruling AAP in Delhi towards women as she equated it with RSS’s thinking.

A netizen reacted, “Rakhi Sawant- the most hard working who gives her hundred percent loyalty and effort to each project she takes, turning a dull flop show into an entertaining one, she is a compliment compared to the hateful fake counter parts!”

“What’s wrong in being a Rakhi Sawant that you are using it as an insult? No matter how hard these seasoned sanghis try to cover their reality, it does slip occasionally,” another user wrote.

Another Twitter user asked, “Why to drag a woman’s name in your political battle?” “Misogyny continues to dominate Indian politics. Criticism of a rival cannot be done without dragging a woman’s name. Shame on you Raghav,” another one tweeted.

Meanwhile, Sidhu hit back at Chadha, saying the AAP leader had not yet answered his question.

“They say man descended from the apes and the monkeys, Looking at your mind @raghav_chadha, I believe you are still descending! You still haven’t answered my question about notifying the Farm Laws by your Government,” he said.
