  • IPL 2021: Sunrisers Hyderabad face Punjab Kings in battle of laggards

    SHARJAH: Almost out of reckoning for a play-off berth, bottom-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to play party-poopers when they take on an equally struggling Punjab Kings in the IPL’s battle of laggards here on Saturday.

    Sunrisers suffered their seventh defeat on Wednesday after being blown away by Delhi Capitals and their play-off chances look less than dim as they have managed just two points after eight games.

    Punjab, on the other hand, quite inexplicably found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against Rajasthan Royals and will be desperate to find an answer to their problems after being placed seventh with six points from nine matches.

    The Kings were well-placed to win their first IPL game of the UAE leg before committing harakari in the last over bowled by Kartik Tyagi.

    They lost two wickets and scored just one run while needing four to win against Rajasthan.

    Despite being packed with excellent Indian and foreign talent, Punjab Kings have regularly messed up games and skipper KL Rahul will have to address their inconsistency.

    Punjab Kings have also lacked any kind of stability over the last 14 seasons with captains and coaches being changed frequently.

    Their playing XI too has gone through many changes, something which has drawn sharp criticism from former team mentor Virender Sehwag.

    In batting, Rahul and Mayank Agarwal have been one of the most dominant opening duo of the IPL. In the last game too, they put on 120 runs in 11.5 overs but none of them could stay back to finish the job.

    While Chris Gayle can destroy any attack even at the age of 41, he was kept out in the last game.

    In the middle-order, Nicholas Pooran, who had a horrendous outing in the first phase, looked good in the last game before he lost his bearings in the final over even as Aiden Markram was left stranded on the other side.

    In bowling department, Mohammed Shami has been their prime bowler and he did well to pull things back against RR. Young Arshdeep Singh also returned with five wickets as he and Shami bowled out RR to 185 in the last game.

    However, Punjab’s spinners, especially England’s Adil Rashid, have disappointed and they will need to step up their game in the next few weeks.

    For Sunrisers, it is all about enjoying the remaining few games and ending on a high.

    With Johnny Bairstow, their season’s leading run-getter, pulling out and Australian opener David Warner in poor form, SRH have found the going tough against Delhi.

    The likes of Kane Williamson, Manish Pandey, Wriddhiman Saha, Kedar Jadhav, Abdul Samad also failed to capitalise on their starts as SRH could manage just 134 in their last game.

    Their bowling has been too dependent on spin sensation Rashid Khan and it will be important for the likes of Khaleel Ahmed, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jason Holder to put up a strong show to give some respectability to the team’s campaign.

  • Losing IPL games narrowly has become a pattern for Punjab Kings: Anil Kumble

    DUBAI: Punjab Kings head coach Anil Kumble admitted that his team losing IPL games narrowly has become a pattern and the two-run defeat to Rajasthan Royals was certainly a difficult pill to swallow.

    The Punjab side failed to score four runs from the final over with the Royals fast bowler Karthik Tyagi dismissing Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda and giving away only one run to snatch the win for his team on Monday.

    “It’s sort of become a bit of a pattern for us, especially as soon as we get to Dubai, it seems. There was a clear message saying we need to finish this game in 19 overs, and that was the approach,” Kumble said at the post-match press conference.

    “Unfortunately, we let it till the end, and in the last couple of balls it becomes a lottery (with) a new batsman going in, it is a bit of lottery.”

    The legendary leg-spinner gave credit to Tyagi for the way he bowled the final over.

    “But credit to how Tyagi bowled the last over, it was pretty obvious that he’s going to bowl wide outside the off stump, but somehow our batters didn’t take the right options. “Yes, it’s become a pattern, that’s something that we need to discuss and sort out. We have five more games, but again, we don’t want to get bogged down by this defeat. It’s certainly a difficult pill to swallow,” elaborated Kumble.

    While Kumble praised the bowling effort of his team, he lamented that the batsmen could not finish the game.

    “It was a very good wicket, in fact we really came back in the last four overs, I think we gave just about 20 runs and picked up six wickets. Arshdeep (Singh) bowled brilliantly, (Mohammed) Shami bowled brilliantly, (Harpreet) Brar bowled really well on a tough pitch. “And remember one side of the ground, the boundaries were short, the other was longer.”

    At one stage, Rajasthan were looking to score almost 200-210, so to really squeeze the last four overs and pick up six wickets, I thought the bowling effort was really good,” said the head coach, who has 619 Test wickets to his name.

    “I think the batting showed till the 17th over that we were cruising, unfortunately, 18th, 19th (over) sort of pulled us back after that six (Aiden) Markram hit. After that, we just got singles and then lost wickets and took it to the last over, which unfortunately we couldn’t finish,” he added.

    According to Kumble, the team management had given a clear message to finish the game in 19 overs, but unfortunately, it did not turn out that way.

    “As batsmen, they certainly know what their scoring shots are, it’s not about just the scoop. It also boils down to that particular batsman. When you have 8 runs in 12 balls, I don’t think we needed a scoop, all it needed was a bit of hitting, and even if someone got out, the next batsman would at least get five or six balls to get those runs. When it goes to the last couple of balls, it becomes really hard,” Kumble said.

  • Captain Sanju Samson fined Rs 12 lakh for Rajasthan’s slow over rate against Punjab

    DUBAI: Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has been fined Rs 12 lakh for his side’s slow over-rate during their two-run win over Punjab Kings in an Indian Premier League match here.

    The Royals pulled off an incredible two-run victory over Punjab Kings with fast bowler Karthik Tyagi dismissing Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda and giving away only one run in the final over to snatch the win for his team at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday.

    “Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their VIVO Indian Premier League 2021 match against Punjab Kings at the Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on September 21,” the IPL said in a statement.

    “As it was his team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Mr Samson was fined Rs 12 lakh,” the statement added.

    The two sides were playing their first match after the resumption of the IPL on September 19.

  • Karthik Tyagi scripts incredible two-run win for Rajasthan Royals against Punjab Kings

    DUBAI: Fast bowler Karthik Tyagi bowled a sensational last over as Rajasthan Royals pulled off an incredible two-run win over Punjab Kings in an Indian Premier League (IPL) thriller here on Tuesday.

    Punjab required four runs off the last six balls but Tyagi dismissed Nicholas Pooran (32) and Deepak Hooda (0) and gave away only one run to snatch the win for his team from the jaws of defeat.

    Punjab ended their innings at 183 for four, chasing 186 to win.

    Sanju Samson’s side was seemingly down and out when KXIP opening pair Mayank Agarwal (67) and KL Rahul (49) put on 120 runs in 11.5 overs.

    With Aiden Markram (26 not out) and Nicholas Pooran (32) going strong, it looked like it would be only a matter of time when Punjab would wrap up the match.

    But in the end, Punjab made a mess in the last over to suffer their sixth defeat from nine matches.

    With this win, the Royals moved to the fifth spot after four wins from eight matches.

    Earlier, the 22-year-old Arshdeep Singh (5/32) complemented his senior pro Mohammed Shami (3/21) well as the duo shared eight wickets to help Punjab bowl out Rajasthan for 185 in exactly 20 overs after they were going strong at 169 for 5 in 17 overs.

    Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (49) and Mahipal Lomror (43) scored bulk of the runs for Rajasthan.

    Chasing the total, Mayank and KL Rahul looked in good touch.

    KL Rahul, who was dropped thrice, smashed 4 fours and 2 sixes in his 33-ball innings.

    He also crossed 3000 IPL runs during his knock.

    Mayank too produced seven hits to the fence and also clobbered two sixes in his 43-ball knock.

    Once the Punjab skipper was caught off Chetan Sakariya (1/31) in 12th over, Agarwal too was removed by Rahul Tewatia (1/23).

    Markram and Pooran then played some delightful shots to keep their chase on track before they were undone by a brilliant last-over by Tyagi.

    Earlier, opener Jaiswal was part of two vital partnerships, adding 54 with his new opening partner Evin Lewis (36) and then sharing another 48 off 28 balls with Liam Livingstone (25).

    Lomror then smashed his way to a 17-ball 43, studded with four sixes and two fours.

    However, in the last three overs, Shami claimed three wickets and Arshdeep completed his five-for to wrap up the RR innings.

    Put in to bat, Jaiswal and Lewis gave RR a flying start with the former smashing two successive fours off Shami in the first over and the latter smacking Ishan Porel, also playing his first match, for a six.

    The West Indies batsman punished Porel for bowling short and wide, blasting four boundaries in the fourth over.

    Deepak Hooda was then taken to the cleaners as he bled 13 runs.

    Arshdeep then produced the breakthrough, deceiving Lewis with a slower ball as Mayank Agarwal took a fine low catch as RR were 57 for one after the powerplay.

    Jaiswal then reverse swept England spinner Adil Rashid for a six, before depositing him over long off for another maximum.

    RR skipper Sanju Samson failed to make any impact as a terrific one-handed catch by KL Rahul ended his stay and gave Porel his maiden wicket.

    Livingstone then joined Jaiswal, who picked up another maximum off Rashid in the 9th over.

    Jasiwal raised the team hundred with another four off Harpreet Brar in the 11th over.

    Livingstone also tried to match his partner as he scooped one fine over KL Rahul and then smacked one over mid-wicket off Arshdeep.

    A sensational catch at deep midwicket by Fabian Allen sent Livingstone back to the hut with RR slipping to 116 for 3.

    Jaiswal couldn’t complete his fifty as his leading edge was held on to by Mayank at short cover.

    New man Lomror then went on a six-hitting spree, blasting two maximums off Rashid before sending Hooda for a couple more in the 16th over as RR crossed the 150-mark.

    Lomror also smashed two fours as Hooda conceded 24 runs off his second over.

    However, RR lost the plot after that as Shami and Arshdeep restricted their opponent to a competitive score in the end.

    Arshdeep Singh returned with a five-wicket haul after Mohammed Shami claimed three as the duo restricted Rajasthan inside the 200-mark after they were going hammer and tongs at one stage.

    Put into bat, Jaiswal was part of in two vital partnerships, adding 54 with his new opening partner Evin Lewis (36) and then sharing another 48 off 28 balls with Liam Livingstone (25).

    Lomror then smashed his way to a 17-ball 43, studded with four sixes and two fours.

    However, Punjab pulled things back in the end with Shami claiming two wickets to restrict RR inside 200.

    Earlier, Jaiswal smashed two successive fours in the first over off Shami, while debutant Lewis sent Ishan Porel, also playing his first match, sailing over for a six as RR had a flying start.

    DUBAI: Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul won the toss and elected to field against Rajasthan Royals in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Tuesday.

    Punjab have left out big-hitting Chris Gayle, and included Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram, Adil Rashid, Fabian Allen as the four foreign players in the playing XI.

    The Royals chose Evin Lewis, Liam Livingstone, Chris Morris and Mustafizur Rahman as their four overseas players.

  • Punjab Kings players KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Mayank Agarwal arrive in Dubai

    DUBAI: Punjab Kings players KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Mohammed Shami who were a part of the Indian squad for the Test series England landed in Dubai on Sunday for the second half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

    These three players will now undergo mandatory six-day quarantine and thereafter, the players will join the rest of the squad.

    Earlier, the Delhi Capitals players who were part of the Indian squad for the Test series against England landed in Dubai safely on Sunday for the second half of the IPL 2021. The players, including Rishabh Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw and Umesh Yadav, underwent Covid-19 tests upon arrival in Dubai.

    “The players will be serving a 6 day hard quarantine, as per IPL protocols, during which they will be tested thrice. Thereafter, the players will join the rest of the Delhi Capitals squad, who are already part of the bio-bubble,” said Delhi Capitals in its official statement.

    The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has informed all franchises that every player coming in from the UK will have to undergo six days of hard quarantine before they can join the existing team bubbles in UAE for the resumption of the 2021 edition of the IPL.

    “The BCCI has informed us on Friday that every player coming in from UK to UAE will have to undergo six days of quarantine before they can join the team bubbles. Obviously the bubble to bubble transfer from UK to UAE no longer stands keeping in mind the current scenario,” the official said.

    With the final Test between India and England in Manchester cancelled, IPL franchises on Friday got in touch with charter companies to fly out their players from Manchester to UAE for the resumption of the cash-rich league.

    The 14th season, which was postponed in May this year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, will resume on September 19 in Dubai with a blockbuster clash between Chennai Super Kings and defending champions Mumbai Indians.

    The action will then shift to Abu Dhabi where Kolkata Knight Riders will square off against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Sharjah will host its first game on September 24 when Royal Challengers Bangalore take on Chennai Super Kings. In all, 13 matches will be held in Dubai, 10 in Sharjah, and 8 in Abu Dhabi.

    The board has come up with a 46-page health advisory that lays down all the pointers that everyone associated with the IPL needs to follow in order to ensure the smooth functioning of the league.

  • Aiden Markram​ to replace Dawid Malan in Punjab Kings squad

    NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings on Saturday named South African batsman Aiden Markram as replacement of English batsman Dawid Malan in their squad for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 after the England batsman pulled out of the tournament.

    “Ahead of the resumption of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League, Punjab Kings today announced the inclusion of South African cricketer Aiden Markram to the squad,” said Punjab Kings in a statement.

    “Markram will replace Dawid Malan who is taking some time off to be with his family before the T20 World Cup and the Ashes Series,” added the franchise.

    Punjab Kings are sixth on the points table, having won three matches out of the eight they have played. They have six points and have a net run rate of -0.368.

    The second leg of the IPL will begin on September 19 with Punjab Kings playing Rajasthan Royals on September 21.

  • Punjab Kings name Australian pacer Nathan Ellis as replacement player

    NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings have named Australia pacer Nathan Ellis as a replacement player for the remainder of Indian Premier League which will be held in the UAE beginning September 19.

    Punjab Kings will miss Riley Meredith and Kane Richardson during the second phase of the IPL.

    “Earlier today, Punjab Kings announced a new addition to their roster, roping in new Australian sensation Nathan Ellis.

    The pacer will be part of the squad for the remainder of the 2021 VIVO Indian Premier League, and is expected to join the team camp shortly after finishing his quarantine,” a press release stated.

    Ellis recently set the T20 world ablaze as he became the first bowler ever to pick up a hat-trick on International debut.

    Ellis claimed figures of 3/34 on debut against Bangladesh in August, 2021.

    The youngster was also recently named in the reserves squad of Australia for the 2021 T20 World Cup.

    Ellis was one of the standout performers of the 2021 Big Bash League.

    He was the leading wicket-taker for his franchise Hobart Hurricanes, accounting for 20 wickets in just 14 games.

    He played all games for the franchise this season and almost got them to the knockout stages.

    Ellis gained a reputation for being a wicket-taker for his franchise, with an impressive bowling average of just over 22.

  • Shikhar Dhawan stars in Delhi Capitals’ dominant win over Punjab Kings

    AHMEDABAD: Shikhar Dhawan’s delightful 69 dwarfed Mayank Agarwal’s unbeaten 99 as Delhi Capitals defeated Punjab Kings by seven wickets in the IPL here on Sunday to go atop the points table.
    Agarwal, leading the side in the absence of regular skipper K L Rahul, used the straight bat effectively in his lone hand to take Punjab Kings to 166 for six.

    For Punjab Kings, it was their fifth loss in eight games, summing up their inconsistent run so far.
    The destructive opening duo of Prithvi Shaw (39 off 22) and Dhawan (69 not out off 47) gave another flying start to Delhi who raced to 63 for no loss in six overs. Both struck delightful drives and punches on the off-side.

    Against the run of play, left-arm spinner Harpeet Brar carried on from where he left off in the game against RCB to dismiss the set Shaw on his very first ball which turned just enough to clip the off-stump.
    After that wicket, Punjab were able to bring down the scoring rate by conceding almost run-a-ball from over 7 to 10.
