  • Punjab man booked for raping minor on promise of marriage

    HOSHIARPUR: A man in a village here has been booked for raping 17-year-old girl on the pretext of marrying here, police said Wednesday.

    A case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

    He raped the victim many times on the pretext of marrying her, according to the complaint.

    Police said efforts were on to arrest the accused.

  • AAP expresses concern over ‘deteriorating’ law and order situation in Punjab

    CHANDIGARH: Senior AAP leader Raghav Chadha on Monday expressed concern over the alleged deterioration in the law and order situation in Punjab and said the murder of a youth Akali leader in Mohali has created an “atmosphere of terror” among people.

    The Aam Aadmi Party’s Punjab affairs co-incharge claimed that over the last few days, there has been an increase in the number of murders in the state and activities of anti-national forces have also intensified.

    Youth leader of Shiromani Akali Dal Vicky Middukhera was shot dead in broad daylight by two armed assailants in Mohali on Saturday.

    Footage from CCTV cameras in the area showed the assailants open fire at Middukhera as he was getting into his parked car.

    Chadha said Middukhera’s killing has “created an atmosphere of terror among the people”.

    “The Aam Aadmi Party is deeply concerned over these developments in Punjab and is determined to extend all possible cooperation to the Captain Amarinder-led government in maintaining peace in the state,” he said.

    He said Chief Minister Amarinder Singh should immediately take up the matter with the concerned authorities and hold a meeting with the representatives of all political parties to discuss the prevailing situation.

    On Punjab being put on high alert after a tiffin box packed with over 2 kg of RDX, which police suspect was dropped by a drone that flew in from Pakistan, was recovered from a village in Amritsar, Chadha said it is a matter of grave concern.

    Pakistan has been indulging in nefarious activities for a long time now, he said.

    The people of Punjab know how to live in peace and harmony and they will give a stern response to the forces that are trying to spoil the atmosphere in the state, he said.

  • Three held in connection with killing of Youth Congress leader in Punjab

    NEW DELHI: Three men have been arrested in connection with the killing of a 34-year-old Youth Congress leader in Punjab’s Faridkot, the Delhi Police said on Sunday.

    The accused have been identified as Gurinder Pal, Sukhvinder and Saurabh, all residents of Faridkot.

    They are allegedly the members of Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

    According to police, Gurinder Pal is the key conspirator in the case.

    Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Manishi Chandra said three men have been arrested in connection with the killing of Youth Congress leader Gurlal Singh on February 18.

    Two unidentified men allegedly fired around 12 shots at Gurlal Singh when he was standing near his car in Faridkot district, according to police.

    He was rushed to a hospital, where he died during the treatment.

    Singh was the president of the Faridkot district Youth Congress.

  • Punjab: 18-year-old killed outside school in Batala over property dispute

    BATALA: An 18-year-old student died after he was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by two persons outside his school at Ghuman village here, police said on Tuesday.

    Simrandeep Singh, a Class 12 student, was killed on Monday when he was coming out of his school along with his brother Harmandeep Singh, they said.

    Harmandeep managed to escape the assailants, police said, adding that Simrandeep suffered injuries to his head, neck and chest.

    He was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, they said.

    It is suspected that Simrandeep was killed over a property dispute between his family and his neighbour, police said.

    Simrandeep was attacked with some shard-edged weapons by the two assailants, they said.

    In a complaint to police, Simrandeep’s father Hardev Singh accused his neighbour of killing his son.

    He has also named members of his neighbour’s family in the complaint, police said.

    Station House Officer, Ghuman, Surinder Singh said a case under relevant Indian Penal Code sections, including 302 (murder), has been registered against nine persons.

    The accused are absconding, police said.

  • Woman, two minor daughters found dead at home in Punjab’s Sangrur

    CHANDIGARH: A 30-year-old woman and her two minor daughters were found dead at their home in Punjab’s Sangrur district, police said on Tuesday.

    Baljit Kaur was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her home in Saron village on Monday evening, Sangrur Deputy Superintendent of Police Satpal Sharma said over the phone.

    The bodies of her two daughters — Arshnoor Kaur (4) and Virasat Kaur (2)–were lying on a bed, said police.

    The bodies were first seen by the woman’s husband after he returned from work, said police.

    The bodies have been sent to the local civil hospital for a post-mortem, they added.

  • 6-year-old girl found raped, murdered in Punjab’s Jalandhar

    CHANDIGARH: A six-year-old girl, who went missing on Saturday evening, was allegedly raped and then killed in Punjab’s Jalandhar district, police said.

    Her body was found from a sugarcane field in Hazara village located on the Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur road on Sunday, they said.

    The victim’s parents, who belong to Bihar and work as labourers, on Saturday lodged a complaint about their missing child after they failed to find her home when they returned from work.

    Santosh, who stays near their home and is a distant relative of victim’s family, told them that he took her on a bicycle to get biscuits and later left her back at home.

    When the girl’s parents started searching her in nearby areas, Santosh absconded, said the police.

    Later, the family lodged a complaint against Santosh, said a police official.

    The girl’s body found on Sunday, said the official.

    Initial investigations suggest that the girl was raped and then killed.

    The body has been sent for post mortem, said the police.

    A case of kidnapping, rape and murder under the IPC and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act has been registered, the police said, adding that efforts were on to nab Santosh.
