  • Format of Priyanka Chopra’s new show ‘The Activist’ changed due to criticism

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: After facing huge backlash, actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ new series ‘The Activist’ is now being reconfigured.

According to Variety, the makers of the upcoming project have shifted its five-episode format to a one-time documentary special.

For the unversed, ‘The Activist’ aims to pit several activists and public figures against each other in order to promote their causes on social media with the goal of securing the highest amount of funding to win the game.

Many social media users have called out the competitive series, which has Priyanka, Usher, and Julianne Hough as hosts. They slammed the show for being tone-deaf and insensitive.

Amid the ongoing criticism, CBS and producing partners Global Citizen and Live Nation issued a statement announcing the change in the show’s format.

“‘The Activist’ was designed to show a wide audience the passion, long hours, and ingenuity that activists put into changing the world, hopefully inspiring others to do the same. However, it has become apparent the format of the show as announced distracts from the vital work these incredible activists do in their communities every day. The push for global change is not a competition and requires a global effort,” the statement read.

“As a result, we are changing the format to remove the competitive element and reimagining the concept into a primetime documentary special (air date to be announced), it will showcase the tireless work of six activists and the impact they have advocating for causes they deeply believe in. Each activist will be awarded a cash grant for the organization of their choice, as was planned for the original show,” the statement continued.

Global Citizen has even apologised to people for hurting their sentiments.

“Global activism centers on collaboration and cooperation, not competition. We apologize to the activists, hosts, and the larger activist community — we got it wrong. It is our responsibility to use this platform in the most effective way to realize change and elevate the incredible activists dedicating their lives to progress all around the world,” the organisation said in a separate statement.

The documentary version is expected to focus on the same activists but without the challenges or evaluations.

  • Aussie journalist questions Priyanka, Nick’s credentials to announce Oscar nominations, actor retorts

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Actor-producer Priyanka Chopra took an Australian entertainment journalist to task after he questioned if the star and her husband, pop star-actor Nick Jonas were qualified to announce the Oscar nominations.

On Monday, the celebrity couple announced the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards from London, where Chopra Jonas is shooting for the Amazon Studios’ series “Citadel” with “Game of Thrones” alum Richard Madden.

Peter Ford wrote on Tuesday night that he wasn’t sure why the duo were zeroed in on as the nomination presenters.

“No disrespect to these two but I’m not sure their contribution to the movies qualifies them to be announcing Oscar nominees,” Ford asked on Twitter on Tuesday.

In her response, Chopra Jonas shared a video listing over 60 credits from her almost two decade-long career — at home in Bollywood, including “Mary Kom”, “7 Khoon Maaf” and “Bajirao Mastani”, her international debut with the ABC series “Quantico” to her Hollywood feature debut “Baywatch”.

She has also starred and co-executive produced the Netflix film “The White Tiger”, which has earned a best adapted screenplay Oscar nomination.

“Would love your thoughts on what qualifies someone. Here are my 60+ film credentials for your adept consideration @mrpford,” Chopra Jonas tweeted.

On the other hand, her husband hasn’t weighed in on the debate on social media.

Jonas, who recently released his new studio album ‘Spaceman’, has starred in films like the “Jumanji” franchise and “Midway”.

He will next be seen in the upcoming “Chaos Walking”.

Soon after her tweet, Ford locked his profile, limiting people from viewing or commenting on his tweet.

Fans of Chopra Jonas were quick to laud the actor for her reply and called out the journalist for being ignorant towards her achievements.

This was the first time the couple announced the Academy Award nominations.

In the previous editions of the award ceremony, they have taken to the stage to present awards for various categories.

  • The Priyanka Chopra Interview | ‘I hope to return to Bollywood soon’

    By Express News Service
Priyanka Chopra is all smiles on account of the positive reception her film The White Tiger is garnering. The actor, who co-produced the direct-to-Netflix film, is thought to be a strong shout for the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Oscar this year.

Priyanka, in London where she is preparing for Citadel, executive produced by the Russo Brothers, expressed her gratitude at being recognised among the many “stunning female performers in the film”. In a chat arranged as part of E-Expressions, a series of webinars organised by The New Indian Express group, Priyanka Chopra spoke with senior journalist Kaveree Bamzai about several topics including work in Hollywood and her views about the representation of minorities.

Priyanka shared that the grey shades of her character Pinky made The White Tiger journey particularly interesting for her. “Pinky wants to help people, but only within her comfort zone. She tries to fakely woke and empathetic with Balram’s character without realising her high ground. No matter how good a person’s intentions are, it is good only after it turns into action.” She also stated her belief that the message in the film is relevant not just for the Indian audience but for the world. “The White Tiger is a reminder for us to think about how desensitised we are about equality. The message is more relevant now as the pandemic has shown us that class division is very much real.”

Priyanka is a strong believer in creating change through art. “I am not a Governor or lawmaker, but I can use my abilities in cinema to start the right conversations. These sparks result in changes. I want to produce opportunities for minorities and the under-represented. I am a big champion for equality. Creating an alternate space for talents that have not found opportunities is my first step to achieving some equality,” she stated.

The actor went on to speak about her presence on social media too. “I have never been one to discuss serious life issues there. Though there is great joy in being able to directly communicate with the people who love me, I remain cautious about the small community of people who thrive in spewing hate and venom.”

Priyanka is presently awaiting the launch of her autobiography, Unfinished, that she wrote during the lockdown. “I am terrified about the world reading it, but I am glad that I have reached a place where I am content and self-assured. Even though I have shared many traumatic incidents, I no longer shy away from talking about them.”

The work she put in the past decade, she said, is paying dividends finally. “I have many exciting updates to share. I have finished shooting for the Matrix film and Text for You during the pandemic. Citadel will keep me busy till the end of the year. I am also in talks for a Hindi film made by my friends. I hope to return to Bollywood soon.”
