  • Shreyas Iyer praises Delhi Capitals’ Prithvi Shaw for his knock against KKR

    By ANI

MUMBAI: After facing a defeat against Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Shreyas Iyer praised his rival batter Prithvi Shaw and called him a player who can the change the game in the powerplay.

Delhi Capitals registered a comprehensive 44 run win against Kolkata Knight Riders here at the Brabourne Stadium on Sunday.

“Prithvi Shaw is a type of batsman who can change the game in the powerplay. I’ve played with him before, obviously. He hits the good shots and even as a captain, I can’t figure out how to set the field for him,” Shreyas said in the post-match press conference.

“Prithvi is someone who doesn’t go really big against spinners. Since he got a really good start, I tried to restrict the momentum that they got. I thought Varun and Sunil are really experienced bowlers, and they could have restricted at that point of time and give us a good hold,” he added.

The skipper further said that his side need to focus on their batting, in order to win in games with such high targets.

“Absolutely not worried about the starts we’re getting. But when you’re chasing 214-215 you need to get off to a really good start. And, you know, you can’t think twice about what the bowler is going to bowl because you have to have that attacking mindset right from ball one and one mistake can get you out as a batsman,” said Shreyas.

“I wouldn’t blame anyone in this particular chase. But, yes, we have this history in the last few games that we didn’t get really good starts and obviously that is also something we need to work on. And this is just the early stage of the tournament. So, you know, once we start practising more, start executing stuff really well on the field, I think, things will be really taken care of pretty well,” he added.

Delhi Capitals not only excelled with the bat but they also were brilliant with the ball and the standout performer was chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav who bagged four wickets and also for the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Rishabh Pant led Delhi registered their second win of the season and now they have two wins from four matches.

  • CSK vs DC: MS Dhoni is something different, says awestruck Prithvi Shaw

    By PTI

DUBAI: Delhi Capitals opener Prithvi Shaw is in awe of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s finishing abilities and considers himself lucky to have got a chance to watch the legendary Chennai Super Kings captain, who steered his team to the IPL final with a brilliant cameo here.

The 40-year-old Dhoni produced a nostalgic little innings (18 not out off 6 balls) to take CSK into their ninth IPL final after beating DC by four wickets in the Qualifier 1 here on Sunday night.

Needing 13 off the last over, Dhoni hit a square cut, got a bit of luck going his way and then pulled DC’s best bowler Tom Curran for the most celebrated T20 boundary of recent times.

“MS Dhoni is something different, everyone knows that. We have seen him finish games so many times and it’s nothing new for him or for us to see him do that. He’s definitely a dangerous player whenever he bats.

“I feel very lucky to be in this atmosphere and get a chance to watch him as a batsman and a leader. He took the game away from us,” Shaw said in a release issued by his franchise.

Shaw (60 off 34 balls) and skipper Rishabh Pant (51 off 35) scored stroke-filled fifties to guide DC to a challenging 172 for five before CSK chased down the total in 19.4 overs.

And Shaw said last night’s loss is a tough one to digest for the team.

“At the moment, we have to back each other. The entire team takes the responsibility for our performance, whether we win or lose. We’ll try and come back stronger in the next match. It’s a tough loss to digest for the team.

“However, we have one more match through which we can qualify for the final and I believe in each and everyone in the team. They are all great players – talent and skill-wise.

I really believe that we can do something special in the next match and go through to the final,” he said Talking about his own innings, Shaw felt he should have carried on for a longer time.

DC still have a chance at making the finals as they will take on the winner of tonight’s eliminator in Qualifier 2 on Wednesday.

“I am happy with my knock, but I feel I should have played a longer innings. This is a lesson for me. When I am in the same situation again, I’ll try to bat for a longer time.”

  • IPL 2021: Shaw, Pant fire Delhi Capitals to 172/5 against Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1

DUBAI: Invited to bat first, Delhi Capitals scored a challenging 172 for five against Chennai Super Kings in the first Qualifier of the Indian Premier League here on Sunday.

Prithvi Shaw top-scored with a 34-ball 60, which was laced with seven fours and three sixes while captain Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer contributed 51 not out and 37 respectively.

Josh Hazlewood was the pick of CSK bowlers with figures of 2/29 while Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo and Moeen Ali took a wicket apiece.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals: 172 for 5 in 20 overs (Prithvi Shaw 60, Rishabh Pant 51 not out; Josh Hazlewood 2/29).

  • I was worried about my technique after getting dropped in Australia: Prithvi Shaw

    By PTI
MUMBAI: The promising Prithvi Shaw says he had started “worrying” about his technique after being dropped in Australia before roaring back to form in domestic cricket, thanks to a few technical changes he made in his game.

Shaw, 21, was dropped after his twin failures in the opening Test at Adelaide last December.

However, the Mumbai batsman dominated the Vijay Hazare Trophy like no other in the history of the tournament, amassing a whopping 827 runs in eight matches.

Then, Shaw made a blistering 72 off 38 balls in Delhi Capitals’ first match of the season against Chennai Super Kings.

“After getting dropped from the Test side after the first Test in Australia, I started worrying about my technique on why I was getting bowled. Even if it was a minor mistake, I wanted to minimize that. I started working on it there itself,” said Shaw after Delhi Capitals’ win over Punjab Kings on Sunday night.

He smashed 32 off just 17 balls against Punjab Kings, hitting three fours and two sixes.

“I worked on my initial movement — getting more stable and more ready before the bowler has bowled.

“After returning from Australia, I worked with my coach Prashant Shetty sir and also Pravin Amre sir before going to the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and it worked quite well. I played my natural game in Vijay Hazare Trophy, but I made a small technical change. After that, it’s going well.

“I didn’t get a lot of practice for IPL, the T20 format. But I got good practice sessions with Ricky Ponting sir, Pravin Amre sir and Prashant Shetty sir,” he added.

The talented batsman also said that Delhi Capitals head coach Ponting has given him the freedom to express himself.

“He (Ponting) just says go there and play freely without thinking a lot of things. Partnerships are quite important in the first six overs.

“We (him and Shikhar Dhawan) do plan about all this (having targets and looking at the scoreboard) before we go to bat.

“The first six overs are crucial in this kind of wicket which is not easy to bat on in the powerplay.”

On Sunday, Dhawan struck a swashbuckling 92 as Delhi Capitals made short work of a huge 196-run target for a six-wicket win over Punjab Kings.

Dhawan looked in sublime form during his 49-ball knock that was studded with 13 fours and two sixes.

Dhawan was ably supported by Shaw (32 off 17) first up and then skipper Rishabh Pant and Marcus Stoinis as DC chased down 196 in 18.2 overs.

  • It was satisfying to execute Prithvi Shaw’s well-planned dismissal: Rajasthan Royals seamer Jaydev Unadkat

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Rajasthan Royals seamer Jaydev Unadkat was extremely satisfied with a perfectly-laid trap for the in-form Prithvi Shaw as his dismissal triggered a top-order collapse from which Delhi Captals eventually failed to recover.

Unadkat’s 3 for 15 was a match-winning spell as he scalped Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan (more due to brilliant catch by Sanju Samson) and Ajinkya Rahane with clever variations of pace on a tricky surface that had moisture.

Asked about the strategy employed to dismiss Shaw, Unadkat said: “We had a couple of plans in place for Prithvi. He (Shaw) played really well last game and you know he tries to hit it down the ground a lot.”

Wish some sing on offer Shaw tried to cart one outside the off-stump towards deep mid-wicket but the outside edge flew to David Miller at backward point.

“If you have a protection down there (straight field), you know the batsman would obviously try and do something new. Be it Prithvi or anyone else, if the ball is doing something, then you will try and go out of your way and try to play a shot, which I think eventually he did and lucky to get as we get in that over itself,” he said.

Being able to execute a strategy in a manner one wants is extremely satisfying, an emotion that the often panned Jaydev Unadkat felt after his match-winning spell for Rakasthan Royals against Delhi Capitals in an IPL game.

Unadkat took 3 for 15 in 4 overs to rock DC’s top-order and also came in at No 9 to score an unbeaten 11 off 7 balls to help Chris Morris in a low-scoring chase.

“So happy to have contributed to the game and happy for myself that I was able to execute what I wanted and how I wanted to do,” Unadkat said at the post-match conference.

A domestic stalwart for Saurashtra, Unadkat’s IPL career has been inconsistent at best and he has often been a subject of harsh trolling in past years when his performance didn’t match his million dollar price tag.

In fact, he was also dropped from the playing XI during Royals’ opening game against Punjab Kings.

“It’s always about just one good game and I knew that when my opportunity will come, I will have to be right up there in terms of my performance and happy to have contributed today,” Unadkat said.

Unadkat felt that the Wankhede pitch wasn’t as much on the slower side as it looked.

“It wasn’t on the slower side. If you would see the stats, it was just about four or five slower balls that that I bowled in the Powerplay. It seemed more because I got wickets on those balls.

“I think it was seaming a little as there was a little moisture in the wicket to start with. The pace (of the deck) increased as the game progressed. That’s why it was still seaming when they came into bowl.”

  • Delhi Capitals batsman Shikhar Dhawan says Prithvi Shaw made a champions-like comeback

    By ANI
MUMBAI: Delhi Capitals opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan said that youngster Prithvi Shaw has made a comeback like a champion in IPL 14 after going through a bad patch earlier in the year.

Dhawan and Shaw sealed the deal for their team with a partnership of 138 runs in their opening match of the Indian Premier League 2021 against the Chennai Super Kings here at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

Dhawan played a blistering knock of 85 from 54 balls, while Shaw smashed 72 runs off 38 balls to help Delhi Capitals defeat Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets.

“It was lovely to watch Prithvi bat so effortlessly and timing the ball so nicely. He went through a bad patch earlier and has come back as a champion. He did so well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scored so many centuries and a double century as well. And now, he has brought the same form in IPL. I am so happy to see him perform that well,” Dhawan said in the Delhi Capitals release.

The 35-year-old added that a comprehensive victory in their first match of the season is a huge confidence booster for the team.”Starting a season on such a high note increases the team’s confidence tremendously. There’s a positive vibe in the dressing room now. We prepared well for the match and everything fell into place nicely. I am very happy with the team’s and my own performance. Looking forward to the next game,” he said.

When asked about Rishabh Pant’s captaincy in his first match as DC skipper, Dhawan said, “We are missing Shreyas Iyer, and I am glad that his surgery went well. But I am very happy for Rishabh Pant. He is a young captain and it’s a great thing that he has got a win in his first match as captain. He was very calm and composed while leading the side. He made good changes as well and I am sure that with experience, he’s only going to get more refined.”

The opening batsman feels Delhi Capitals can lift the title this season with the continued backing from the team’s fans.

“I would like to thank the fans for their love and wishes and tell them to keep supporting us the way they have been doing and continue to be a part of the DC family. And with the fans’ support, we will surely win and bring the trophy home,” he said.

Delhi Capitals will next take on Rajasthan Royals here at the Wankhede Stadium on April 15.

  • Speak to Ricky Ponting about tactics and strategies as a batsman: Delhi Capitals star Prithvi Shaw

    By ANI
MUMBAI: Delhi Capitals got off to a fantastic start in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 with a seven-wicket win over the Chennai Super Kings here at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday. Opening batsman Prithvi Shaw was in the thick of things as he blasted his way to 38-ball 72-run innings, helping his team chase down a target of 189 runs with 8 balls to spare.

“Very happy with the way I batted. Everyone executed whatever we practiced in the last few days. It was brilliant to see everyone contributing to the team. The opening stand which we got was very crucial for us. Chasing 190 odd is not easy without a good start. It was a great win for us; however, I should have stayed in the middle until the end. So, if I have to rate my innings out of 10, I will give an 8 to myself,” Shaw said in the Delhi Capitals release.

The 21-year-old, who scored a whopping 827 runs in 8 matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, spoke about how he got back into form before the IPL 2021.

“I made some small changes in my batting before the IPL. I just wanted to minimise all the mistakes I was making, and I worked hard. I practiced for two weeks with Strength and Conditioning Coach Rajinikanth Sivagnanam sir and Pravin Amre sir before the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Then I just played my natural game with a few changes in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.”

The opening batsman expressed that he worked out his technical errors with Rajinikanth Sivagnanam and Pravin Amre and speaks to the head coach Ricky Ponting more about tactics as a batsman.

“With Ricky, I generally speak to him about tactics and strategies as a batsman. He has played so much of cricket and he has got the experience which he can share with us and he does especially with the youngsters. I am really enjoying working with him,” Shaw said.

When asked about the newly appointed skipper Rishabh Pant’s captaincy, he said, “We really miss Shreyas Iyer, and he led the team very well. However, Rishabh Pant is very smart. He is fearless and enjoys the game. He’s very entertaining on the field and is very cool and calm as a Captain. He’s doing a fantastic job for the team.”

Shaw, who was very happy with the team’s performance in their first match of the season, had a special message for the Delhi Capitals fans.

“All the fans have given us so much of love. The fans were still caring for me even when I wasn’t doing well before the Vijay Hazare Trophy so I would like to thank everyone and ask them to keep supporting me and the Delhi team for this IPL,” he said.

Delhi Capitals will next take on Rajasthan Royals here at the Wankhede Stadium on April 15.

  • After getting dropped during Australia tour, I worked hard on myself: Delhi Capitals batsman Prithvi Shaw

    By ANI
MUMBAI: Delhi Capitals batsman Prithvi Shaw said he worked hard on himself with coach Pravin Amre after returning from a “disappointing” Australia tour and the hard work can be seen in the batting style of the opener in the recent tournaments.

Shaw played the first Test of the Australia series but the scores of 0 and 4 paved his way out of the team. The 21-year-old focused on his technique and came back strong. He amassed over 800 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, becoming the first cricketer in history to do so.

In this season’s opening clash for Delhi Capitals against Chennai Super Kings, Shaw continued his form and played a knock of 72 off 38 balls studded with three sixes and nine fours. Shaw and his partner Shikhar Dhawan put on 138 runs for the opening wicket in a chase of 189 which enabled them to defeat CSK comfortably by seven wickets.

“Feeling good. Everyone contributed and it was a good start (to the season). The wicket was good to bat on in the second innings and we executed quite well. From Australia when I was dropped I was working from there itself, coming back and across early, so I practised before going to Vijay Hazare with Pravin Amre and worked on that. I had a good plan before going into that tournament, so it is working quite well,” Shaw said after the match

“I don’t want to think about it (being dropped from the Indian side) because it was a disappointing moment for me but I have to move on and if something is wrong with my batting or technique, I have to improve and I am working hard on myself,” he added.

Dhawan also said that Shaw carried on his form from Vijay Hazare.

“I really enjoyed my batting. Was enjoying the way I was hitting the ball. Prithvi was batting really well. He carried on with his form from Vijay Hazare. It was important to get off to a good start because we were chasing a big total,” Dhawan said.

The left-handed batsman played a knock of 85 runs was studded with two sixes and 10 fours. He played shots all around the park and troubled CSK bowlers with his clever batting.

“I have to innovate a few shots and I enjoy taking up challenges. I was playing the ball close to the body. The wicket was a little sticky. I knew my game plan. It is tremendous to watch Prithvi. He played some effortless shots. So good and so happy for him as he didn’t have a good IPL last time around. I liked the Moeen Ali catch the most,” he added.
