  • Maharashtra: Man gets daughter to pen suicide note naming kin, then kills her

    By PTI

NAGPUR: A 40-year-old man has been arrested here for allegedly hoodwinking his teen daughter into writing suicide notes to implicate his relatives, and then asking her to enact suicide during which he actually murdered her.

The 16-year-old girl was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her house in Kalamna area of Nagpur city on November 6, a police official said on Saturday.

Police registered a case of abetment to suicide against her stepmother, uncle, aunt and grandparents on the basis of five suicide notes found in the room, said the official of Kalamna police station.

But an examination of the victim’s father’s mobile phone during the probe revealed that there was a fiendish plot behind what looked like a suicide.

“In the mobile phone, we found a photograph of the victim enacting a suicide bid. It came to light that he had asked his daughter to act as if she was hanging herself and clicked a photograph, claiming he wanted to teach his relatives a lesson,” the police official said.

“Before that he had asked her to write five suicide notes naming these relatives. When the girl did that and then tied the noose around her neck and stood on a stool as instructed by him, he clicked a photo and then kicked the stool, causing her death by hanging. She died in front of her father and 12-year-old sister,” the official said.

The accused then left the house. He later called police, claiming that he had stepped out for some work and upon return found that his daughter had hanged herself, said the official.

Police initially registered a case of abetment to suicide under the Indian Penal Code against the five relatives.

But then the investigators realized that something was amiss.

“After we came upon the suicide enactment photo in his phone, we questioned the man, and he confessed to murdering his daughter. His first wife had ended her life in 2016 and the second wife had also left home,” the official said.

The man, who works as a labourer, was arrested for alleged murder.

Police were probing the motive behind the crime, the official added.

  • Antilia case-Hiran murder: Court rejects former cop’s plea; says his involvement prima facie ‘clearly seen’

    By PTI

MUMBAI: A special NIA court here has rejected the discharge plea of former police officer Sunil Mane in the Antilia bomb scare case and the subsequent murder of Thane businessman Mansukh Hiran, saying that prima-facie his involvement is clearly seen in the case.

Special court judge A M Patil rejected Mane’s discharge application on Thursday. The detailed order was made available on Friday.

Mane was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in April 2021 for his alleged role in the case.

However, in his discharge plea filed before the court, the accused claimed that he was nowhere connected to the theft of Mansukh Hiran’s vehicle on February 25, 2021 or placing of explosives near businessman Mukesh Ambani’s residence.

He further contended that former police officers Sachin Waze, prime accused in the case, and Pradeep Sharma, had hatched a conspiracy to kill Hiran with other accused and till this stage, this applicant (Mane) was not in the picture.

As per the charge-sheet, it is clear that the applicant has not committed any offence under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and therefore, he is entitled for discharge of the offence under the provisions of anti-terror act and for default bail in the offence of Indian Penal Code (IPC), Mane’s plea said.

On the other hand, the NIA submitted that Waze had induced Hiran to place an explosive-laden SUV on Carmichael Road (near Ambani’s residence) and tried to convince him to accept the responsibility for placing the same.

When Hiran refused to accept, Waze hatched a conspiracy to kill him through accused Pradeep Sharma and Mane with the help of hired killers, the probe agency claimed.

It further contended that this applicant entered into a “well-organised conspiracy” headed by Waze for the murder of Hiran, which was a direct outcome of terrorist act committed by Waze and others.

The court, upon perusal of statements of witnesses, said, “It is clear that prima-facie involvement of this applicant is seen in this case.”

It is also seen that prosecution has material to prove conspiracy between the accused and its culmination in the murder of Hiran by Waze, along with the co-accused including the applicant, the court held.

Apart from the statements of witnesses, the prosecution has incriminating evidence, such as call detail records of mobile phone used by the accused (Mane), the court added.

It is also seen from the charge-sheet that Hiran was killed by the accused because of the crime dated February 25, 2021.

It is the basic story of prosecution that the act of parking the explosives-laden vehicle of Hiran and thereafter his murder was a well-planned act involving high-end criminal conspiracy, which was executed by the accused with an intent to strike terror, the court said.

The judge said that it is seen from the prosecution story that the said act of the accused is “nothing but a terrorist act”.

Lastly, the court ruled that the act of Mane cannot be segregated at this juncture.

“Without leading evidence, it cannot be concluded that applicant number 5 (Mane) had no knowledge about the act of other accused in respect of the incident dated 25, 2021,” the court noted.

The NIA, probing the case, has arrested 10 people, including Waze, Sharma and Mane, in connection with the February 25, 2021 incident when an explosives laden vehicle was found parked near ‘Antilia’, Ambani’s residence.

Hiran was found dead a few days later in neighbouring Thane.

  • 16-year-old boy in Odisha held for murdering family members, neighbour

    By PTI

AGARTALA: A 16-year-old boy allegedly murdered three members of his family and a neighbour at a remote village in Tripura’s Dhalai district and dumped their bodies in a well, a senior police officer said on Sunday. The accused has been detained for interrogation, the officer said.

“Initial investigations suggest that the boy, a resident of Kamalpur subdivision, routinely consumed drugs. He killed his mother, grandfather, 10-year-old sister and a neighbour on Saturday morning when his father was away. The motive of the crime is not clear as yet,” the officer said.

According to the officer, the boy’s father came home to find blood splattered everywhere, and the bodies dumped in the well next to the house. The father raised an alarm, following which villagers informed the police about the incident.

Villagers claimed that they could hear loud music playing around 9.30 am at the household of the accused, and hours later his father found the four bodies in the well.

“We suspect that he played loud music to keep other villagers in the dark,” the police officer said. The bodies were recovered on Saturday evening and sent for post-mortem, he said.

“There were injury marks on the bodies which indicate the killer used blunt object to murder the four persons.

However, the actual cause of death will be known only after the postmortem report arrives,” the officer said, adding that the accused was detained as he was trying to flee the village.

Police claimed that the 22-year-old man Rahul has confessed that he killed his wife over domestic strife.

The deceased has been identified as Priyanka (20) who lived with her husband and a one-year-old daughter at a rented accommodation in Sirhual village here, a police official said, adding they got married in February last year.

After the woman’s body was found on Monday afternoon, police filed an FIR under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (hiding the evidence) at Sector 18 police station.

The post-mortem revealed that she was strangulated to death.

A police team scanned footage from CCTVs at IFFCO Chowk and identified an e-rickshaw in which the accused had reached the spot with the suitcase, ACP (crime) Preet Pal Singh Sangwan said.

“On questioning the e-rickshaw driver, it was found that the person had boarded the vehicle from Sirhaul village. Following combing of the village, Rahul was nabbed,” the police officer said.

During interrogation, Rahul revealed that the wife used to demand mobile, TV and refrigerator which was out of his means since he earned a meagre salary.

They used to fight over this issue quite often.

On the night of October 16, Priyanka slapped Rahul following a fight, which enraged him and he strangulated her, Sangwan said.

On the morning of October 17, he bought a big suitcase and stuffed her wife’s naked body into it after peeling off the skin from her hand which had her name tattooed.

The knife also has been recovered by police, the ACP said.

“We have informed the families of both the accused and deceased,” the police officer added.

Due to security reasons at the Barrage bridge, the police of Laxman Jhula police station stopped the protesters by putting up barricades, on which angry protesters started sloganeering there. Women protesters also sat on the road and started shouting slogans.

In Hindi and broken English, he has also written in his diary one-line sentences like: “I want Restart My life”, “Zindagi to bas taklif deti hai, sukoon to maut hi deti hai (life only hurts, death brigs peace), and “everyday starts with expectation but ends with bad experience”.

Lohar has also scribbled in his diary a popular Bollywood song from movie Ashiqui 2 — “Bhula dena mujhe, hai alvida tujhe” — in which the lyrics talk about separation and goodbyes.

He wrote he was “99 per cent sad” in his life but wore a “fake smile 100 per cent”.

“I am 10 per cent happy, having zero per cent love in life and 90 per cent tension in life. I hate my life which only gives pain and waiting for death to restart my life,” he wrote.

DG (Prisons) Lohia was found dead at his residence on the outskirts of Jammu on Monday night. His throat was slit and there were burn injuries on the body.

According to Additional Director General of Police, Mukesh Singh, Lohar was working in this house for nearly six months.

“Initial investigations reveal he was quite aggressive in his behaviour and was also under depression,” he said.

The ADGP said a preliminary examination of the crime scene indicated that Lohia must have been applying some oil on his foot, which was swollen.

The killer allegedly suffocated Lohia to death and used a broken ketchup bottle to slit his throat and later tried to set the body afire.

“The suspect had bolted the room from inside while he was rubbing balm on his foot. He repeatedly attacked him with a sharp object and even threw a burning pillow towards him in an apparent bid to set the body ablaze,” he said.
