  • Marwari horses exported for first time; to serve in Bangladesh President entourage

    By PTI

JODHPUR: Six Marwari horses have been exported from Jodhpur to Bangladesh where they will be used for carrying the cart of Bangladesh’s President, an official of the All India Marwari Horse Society said.

This is for the first time that this indigenous breed of horse from the desert has been exported.

Jangjeet Singh Nathawat, Secretary of the All India Marwari Horse Society and Marwari Horse Stud Book Registration Society (MHSRS) of India said that all these six horses reached Bangladesh on September 29.

“These horses have been ordered by Bangladesh police for the horse carriage of the President of Bangladesh,” Nathawat said.

All six horses belong to Marwar Stud of Bal Samand Lake Palace, governed by the Umaid Bhawan Palace of Jodhpur, and have been registered as a ‘Marwari horse’ with the MHSRS.

“We kept striving to export Marwari Horses and succeeded in getting permission.

The export would be on a case-to-case basis,” said Nathawat, terming the development an outcome of constant efforts of the erstwhile ruler of Jodhpur and the patron of the society, Gaj Singh.

As a result of these endeavours, the animal husbandry department of the central government gave a no-objection certificate for the export of these horses, with an export licence provided by the Director General of Foreign Trade.

Marwari horses are one of the finest breeds of horses and are considered the most elegant and enduring breed of all.

“It is a matter of great pride for us that the Bangladesh government has imported our horse for the state carriage of the President,” Nathawat said, adding that similar demands of Marwari horses have been pouring in from the US, European, and Arabian countries.

Over the past decade, the society in Jodhpur has been trying not only the promotion and conservation this breed of horse but has also been striving for their exports considering their love among foreign horse lovers and equestrians.

Gajendra Pal Singh Posana, the joint secretary of the society said that there have been five meetings in the past 12-13 years to convince the ministry to allow the export of this breed.

“There had been a demand of 40-50 such horses from Bangladesh but due to delay in sanction we could send only six horses after the last meeting with the minister Purushottam Rupala,” Posana said.

He said that the Bangladesh Army was also in discussion with the society for the purchase of 20 Marwari horses, but due to a delay in permission, obtained 17 Arabian horses from the Qatar government.

Marwari horses are known for their elegance, beauty, gait and other features, which many have said to be incomparable with any other horse breed on the earth.

In 2009, Spanish businessman Mario Calcagno fell in love with the breed and tried hard to take them to Spain but failed.

Undeterred by his failure to export, he bought two colts and four mares of this breed to be kept in the custody of the society at Balsamand Lake Palace in Jodhpur.

Nathawat said that earlier there was no pedigree mapping for the Marwari horse breed, a lack which was filled by the opening of a stud book in 2006, under the helm of MSRS for mapping the breed’s pedigree.

The move not only helped people have a list of purebred Marwari horses but also spread the word among foreign horse lovers who contributed to their conservation, Nathawat said.

Mapping the breed history will pave way for more export for the Marwari breed as the inquiries have been pouring in from Germany, the US, UAE and other countries, he claimed.

“European countries have some protocols regarding some equine diseases.

But we are studying those protocols and are trying to resolve them so that those who want to import the horses of this breed could have them”, Nathawat said.

The society, which has the authority to provide passports for export, has till now registered over 3,000 pure-breed Marwari horses since the process of registration began.

Posana said that these collective efforts have paid off both in terms of a spurt in the number of the horse and their price in the market.

The efforts are now being made by the society to urge the government to speed up the process of their export, he added.

  • 46-yr-old tribal man lynched over drawing water from a tubewell in Rajasthan

    By PTI

JODHPUR: A 46-year-old tribal man was beaten to death over drawing water from a tubewell in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur, police said on Monday.

The accused also hurled casteist slurs at Kishanlal Bheel (46), from Bhomiyaji ki Ghati in Soorsagar, and did not allow his family members to take him to a hospital, his brother Ashok alleged.

It was only after police reached the spot that the seriously injured man was hospitalised where he succumbed to injuries, he added.

Police have so far arrested three people — Shakeel, Nasir, and Bablu — and booked them under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, police said.

The search for others involved in the incident is on, SHO, Soorsagar Police Station, Gautam Dotasara said.

Demanding immediate arrest of all accused as well as financial compensation and a government job for the next of kin, Bheel’s family and community members staged a protest and refused to perform his last rites.

“We have been in conversation with the demonstrators so that the postmortem can be done and the body be handed over to the family for the funeral,” said Dotasara.

Ashok alleged that some of the locals, including the three detained, have control over the tubewell installed in the locality.

They have also fitted a pump on it and do not let others use it.

“On Sunday night, Kishanlal had gone to the tubewell for water but these people pushed him away and hurled casteist slurs at him,” Ashok alleged.

Soon after he returned home, some people, including Nasir, Shakeel and Bablu, attacked our house and beat up Bheel and his son with rods and sticks, Ashok said.

The police have appealed to the people to maintain peace, not believe in rumours and inform the local police officials about any rumour being spread.

Director-General of Police M L Lather said so far 211 people have been arrested for disturbing peace and harmony.

Tension broke out in Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s constituency Jodhpur on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, over the installation of Islamic flags on the Jalori gate circle, a roundabout alongside the statue of freedom fighter Balmukund Bissa, as members of the other community alleged that a saffron flag, which they had put up there ahead of Parshuram Jayanti, had gone missing.

The issue snowballed into stone-pelting and clashes. The situation was brought under control in the early hours on Tuesday with heavy deployment of police but tensions escalated again in the morning after prayers at an Eidgah close to the circle.

Shops, vehicles and houses were pelted with stones near the area. Looking at the situation, a curfew was imposed in 10 police station areas of Jodhpur city.

  • Rajasthan: Panchayat election results thrill Congress as it wrests Jaipur, Jodhpur Boards from BJP

    Express News Service

JAIPUR: The ruling Congress has marched well ahead of the BJP in the panchayat elections for six districts of Rajasthan. The Ashok Gehlot-led Congress has won 670 panchayat samiti seats and is likely to form the board in 4 of the 6 Zila Parishads that went to polls.

The Congress has secured majority in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur, and Dausa districts while the BJP gained majority in Sirohi Zila Parishad.

The BJP was also single largest party in Bharatpur Zila Parishad but fell short of a clear majority.

Independents and BSP members will play a crucial role in the formation of the zila parishad board in Bharatpur.

The Congress victories in Jaipur and Jodhpur are being seen as particularly impressive as the BJP was holding both of these earlier. With Congress securing a clear majority in both, most see the results as a major jolt to the opposition BJP.

Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra was quick to describe the results as very encouraging for his party and a big setback for the BJP.

“The Congress party has won the elections with an overwhelming majority. Out of 1,562 wards of panchayat samiti, 670 Congress candidates were victorious. In Bharatpur too, 171 candidates of Congress ideology who contested the election without party symbol were the winners,” he said.

He said the Congress would have its Pradhan in 60 of the 78 panchayat samiti where the elections were held and claimed the BJP could win a majority in only 14 panchayat samitis.

Dotasra said the results were a validation of the work done by the Congress government led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. He said that the party would leave no stone unturned in the development of Rajasthan.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also congratulated the winners and thanked voters for making the Congress party victorious in the elections.

“I express my gratitude to all the voters for getting the Congress victory in the panchayat samiti and Zila Parishad elections held in six districts. Many congratulations to all the winning candidates and Congress workers,” he tweeted.

CM Gehlot also claimed that the win in the Panchayat polls is a stamp of approval from the people of the state for the splendid manner in which the Rajasthan government managed to tackle the covid crisis.

Though the results are being seen as a setback for the BJP, the party’s state president Satish Poonia is hardly inclined to concede defeat. He took to Twitter to congratulate BJP  candidates who won the elections. In a tweet, he thanked the people for supporting the BJP  in the elections and the party workers for their hard work. “Hearty congratulations to the candidates who won the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections,” he added.

All political observers are now focused on the election for Pramukh and Pradhan which will be held on September 6. Elections for up-Pramukh and up-Pradhan will be held on September 7.

  • Khap panchayat boycotts three families trying to protect wildlife in Rajasthan village

    Express News Service
JAIPUR: A Khap Panchayat has imposed a total boycott on three families in a village in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district for raising voice against wildlife hunting. As some people did not like their stand, a Khap Panchayat was called in the village and the panchayat issued a diktat for ‘hukka pani band’ (implying no social or economic transactions) for these families nearly three weeks ago.

As a result of the Khap’s decision in Bala village of Bilara subdivision of Jodhpur, the families of Papparam, Chhotu Singh and Suresh Kumar have been virtually imprisoned in their homes since June 5. Nobody in the village is providing them with even basic rations or milk. Also, the affected three families now have no means to earn a living.

Among the victims, Suresh belongs to a family of Vishnois who is known for their love of the environment and wildlife and especially for saving deer found in large numbers in west Rajasthan. In their village, many farmers have put barbed wires in their fields to protect crops from wildlife. As a result, many deer injure themselves and even get killed as they get trapped in these wires. Sometimes dogs and other hunters also chase them.

Since such incidents were increasing constantly, a complaint was filed with the Forest Department. In this case, the forest department made Suresh a government witness. This is reportedly the chief reason that angered the villagers and led to the Khap’s decision to ostracise the victims. A meeting of the Khap Panchayat was held on June 5, Environment Day. About 50 people, including Sarpanch Nathuram, gathered and issued a decree to excommunicate the families of Papparam, Chhotu Singh and of course, Suresh Kumar.

After the decree of the Khap Panchayat, villagers have stopped all interaction with the victim families. As soon as the decree was issued, people distanced themselves from the three families. Even traders of pulses, fertilizer seeds, agricultural equipment, etc. refused to provide them any goods.

If anyone protested against the decision, the Khap also threatened action against them. Due to this, the shopkeepers of the village are not giving even ration and water to the three families.  For the past three weeks, the victims have faced total contempt from people in their village.

“The barbed wires were being used as a means to hunt and kill wildlife and even dogs. We are being punished simply because I raised my voice against cruelty to wildlife and became a government witness in this case,” Suresh Kumar remarked.

On the basis of a complaint filed by key victim Suresh Kumar, the police have finally registered a case. According to Achal Dan, the SHO, “a case has been registered at Bilara police station regarding Khap Panchayat and our investigation is going on. About 50 people including Sarpanch Nathuram have been named in this case about calling a village panchayat and socially boycotting the family of the complainant Suresh Vishnoi . The investigation is on and  action would be taken against anyone who is found guilty. ” Moved by the plight of the victims, a prominent Jain saint, Shraman Dr Pushpendra has now shot off a letter to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on this whole issue. In the letter, the saint has asked for rescinding the decree of the Khap Panchayat and has asserted that “I’ve never seen worse results for anyone trying to stop violence against wildlife as in this case. As such, the state government should take the strictest measures against the culprits and rescue the victims as soon as possible so that in future no one will dare to issue such absurd diktats as the Khap Panchayat.”

  • Asaram fit and stable, his plea for treatment elsewhere abuse of law: Rajasthan government tells SC

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Rajasthan government has told the Supreme Court that self-styled godman Asram Bapu, serving a life term in two rape cases in a Jodhpur jail, is fit and stable but trying to change the venue of his custody on the pretext of medical treatment.

The state government made this submission to the apex court in its reply to Asaram’s fresh plea, seeking suspension of his sentence and interim bail to undergo treatment for various ailments at an ayurvedic centre near Haridwar in Uttarakhand.

Asaram is serving varying jail terms including life sentences in two sexual assault cases. “The accused/petitioner with ulterior motive has been attempting to change the venue of his custody, under the guise of medical treatment. Such change, with due respect, is an abuse of the process of law,” the state government said in an affidavit.

“The accused is also deliberately delaying the pending trial at Gandhi Nagar as well as Jodhpur, raising such pleas with mala fides whereas he is stable and fit,” it said.

The government said Jodhpur is one of the rare centres, where both the allopathic and ayurvedic treatments are available.

“The treatment to the accused may be provided by a committee of doctors of Jodhpur AIIMS and the Jodhpur Ayurveda Hospital, as may be directed by this court,” the state government said.

It also said Asaram was tested positive for COVID-19 on May 6 and was having mild symptoms, with low-grade fever and was treated properly.

On June 4, the apex court had sought the Rajasthan government’s response to Asaram’s plea for the court’s permission for the treatment at an ayurvedic centre near Haridwar.

The top court had then orally observed that it was not inclined to grant interim bail by suspending the self-styled godman’s sentence.

Ashram had sought the suspension of his sentence for two months saying he needed to get ‘holistic’ treatment of his multiple ailments at a medical centre near Haridwar.

Asaram has moved the apex court, challenging the Rajasthan High Court order which had earlier dismissed his plea for the suspension of his sentences to undergo treatment at a medical centre of his choice. The plea was filed through lawyer Saurabh Ajay Gupta.

A Jodhpur court, on April 25, 2018, had sentenced Asaram to life in prison after finding him guilty of raping a teenage girl in his ashram in 2013.

His accomplices Sharad and Shilpi were sentenced to 20 years in jail by the court in the same case for their roles.

The teenager had said in her complaint that Asaram had called her to his ashram in Manai area near Jodhpur and raped her on the night of August 15, 2013.

The 16-year-old girl from Shahjahanpur of Uttar Pradesh was studying at Asaram’s ashram in Chhindwara in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. He was also convicted in a 2002 rape case and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Asharam is also facing a rape case in Surat in Gujarat.

Asaram was arrested in Indore and brought to Jodhpur on September 1, 2013, and is in judicial custody since then.

  • COVID: Pakistani Hindu migrants in Rajasthan appeal to PM Modi for vaccination based on travel documents

    Express News Service
JAIPUR: While the Indian citizens over 18 are being vaccinated as a defence against the Corona virus, The Pakistani Hindu migrants living in Rajasthan are being turned away from vaccine centers as they have no Aadhar cards. Now, the migrants have appealed to PM Modi to be inoculated based on their travel documents.

A large population of migrants are waiting for citizenship. The Adhar card is created when someone is a citizen of India. The displaced ask that when sages, saints, and homeless people are being vaccinated without an Aadhar card, then why not them?

Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district is the biggest hub for Pakistani migrants in the country. There are about 21 colonies of Pakistani migrants in Jodhpur who are facing the rigors of the Corona pandemic.

Shyam Hirani is one such migrant who had come to Jodhpur from Pakistan’s Sindh province in 2009. When he went with his five-member family to a vaccine center in Jodhpur, he was asked to go back.

“We have been living in Jodhpur for the last 12 years and have applied for Indian citizenship but we do not have Aadhar cards so we were not given the vaccines. The Corona second wave is killing so many people in Jodhpur and the lives of my family members are in danger if we do not get vaccinated”, he said.

Tired of the religious persecution in Pakistan, hundreds of Pakistani Hindus had come to settle in India before the Thar Express was closed. These migrants are living not just in Jodhpur, but also in Jaisalmer and in many areas of the state. More than 30 thousand Pakistanis are living in Jodhpur, Jaipur, and Jaisalmer, who do not have a Aadhaar card.

Migrant activist, Ashok Suthar, says that 10 Pakistani Hindu migrants have died due to Corona-like symptoms and lack of medical facilities in Jodhpur, although many have recovered.

“Coronavirus is spreading rapidly in these areas and in 21 such ghettos 50 people have been found for the positive while 1500 people have an influenza-like illness but they have never had any medical investigation done”, he said.

Hindu Singh Sodha, President of Lok Seemant Sangathan, an NGO working for their rights has written a letter to the Prime Minister asking for vaccination for the migrants.

“Pakistani migrants have travel documents. People have term visas and permission to stay. Inoculate with these documents. Nomads, saints, homeless, etc. are included in the notification of the Union Ministry of Health but this most vulnerable group is left out! ” Hindu Singh Sodha, President of Lok Seemant Sanghthan urged.

Jodhpur is also the hometown of Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, and the state government has given reassurance to the migrants that they will be vaccinated. But the entire issue is linked with the Central Government as well.

In 2019 before the Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Modi had conducted a huge rally in Barmer where he had promised to mitigate the problems of the Hindu migrants from Pakistan. After the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act, the migrants hoped that they would get citizenship soon and their identity crisis would end, but the troubles in the corona period remain the way they were.

  • Six day search operation ends with Army officer’s body found from Jodhpur lake

    By PTI
JODHPUR: A six-day-long search operation for an Army officer came to an end on Tuesday when his body was finally found by divers from a lake here in the afternoon.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Neeraj Sharma said the body of Captain Ankit Gupta was recovered from the Kalyana lake at about 3 pm and was immediately taken to the Military Hospital.

It is not confirmed yet whether his last rites would be performed in Jodhpur or at his native place.

Captain Gupta of the 10 Para (Special Forces) unit of the Army had jumped into the lake from a helicopter with some fellow personnel during an exercise on Thursday afternoon.

While the others resurfaced immediately after jumping into the water, Captain Gupta failed to show up, thereby triggering the search operation.

The six-day-long search operation in the lake was one of the longest such operations, in which a special camera team, the MARCOS unit of the Navy, the NDRF, the SDRF, a Civil Defence team, private local divers as well as divers and experts from the Army and the police tirelessly embarked upon a mission to search the drowned officer day and night.

Sub-Inspector from the Rajiv Gandhi Nagar police station Manoj Kumar said about 250 divers and experts with 15 boats were part of the search operation, but the thick moss and complex rocky formations at the bottom of the lake, apart from the aqua vegetation and sticky sand, constantly thwarted their efforts.

On Monday, a team of 20 experts with special cameras was also roped in to enable viewing through the murky water of the lake.

Besides, huge compressors were pressed into service to stir the water in anticipation that the body would surface due to the waves created by the air infused through the pipes.

An officer, seeking anonymity, said though the hopes of finding Captain Gupta alive were diminishing gradually, still the search operation would begin with a renewed vigour and determination every day.

Captain Gupta hailed from Haryana’s Gurugram and had been married for just over two months.

He had reached Jodhpur straight from his wedding vacation to join the exercise.
