  • Hard quarantine awaits IPL players flying to UAE from Manchester

    Express News Service

CHENNAI: After the cancellation of the fifth Test between England and India at Old Trafford in Manchester on Friday, Saturday was an extremely hectic day for all the IPL franchises. They were busy making arrangements to ensure that the India and England players, part of the IPL, join the respective franchises in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as early as possible.

While the Mumbai Indians trio of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav were flown to Abu Dhabi on a private charter flight on Saturday morning, a few players from other teams reached later in the day.

Originally, the IPL-bound players were supposed to travel to UAE from Manchester on September 15, a day after the scheduled close of the fifth Test.

Even though all the Indian players had tested negative for Covid in Manchester, Rohit, Bumrah and Suryakumar were tested upon arrival in Abu Dhabi too and returned negative results again. The players flying from Manchester have to undergo six days of hard quarantine before joining their teams in the IPL bubble.

“The trio (Rohit, Bumrah and Suryakumar), along with their families, arrived on Saturday morning. All members had returned negative RT-PCR results before departure. A new RT-PCR test was undertaken upon arrival at Abu Dhabi, which is negative as well,” the Mumbai Indians said in a statement on Saturday.

The IPL-bound Indian players were initially supposed to enter a bubble in Manchester before the fifth Test in order to facilitate a bubble-to-bubble transfer in the UAE but that did not materialise given the circumstances. They will be tested thrice during the first six days of hard quarantine.

The resumption of the suspended IPL begins with Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings in Dubai on September 19. CSK are currently training in Dubai, where they will be joined by five players from the India-England series: Ravindra Jadeja, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shardul Thakur, Moeen Ali and Sam Curran. “The players are travelling on a commercial flight. They will be able to start training with the team only after completing quarantine,” a CSK official said.

Moeen and Curran might be heading to the IPL, but quite a few English players seem to be reluctant. Jonny Bairstow (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Dawid Malan (Punjab Kings) and Chris Woakes (Delhi Capitals) pulled out of the IPL on Saturday and there seems to be a concern that more England players could potentially pull out. Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer (injury) and Ben Stokes had already confirmed their unavailability for the resumption of the IPL.

A source close to Delhi Capitals indicated that there is uncertainty over Sam Billings and Tom Curran joining the franchise too.

“We are not sure whether Billings and Curran will join us. Woakes has pulled out citing bubble fatigue. He wanted to spend time with his family. We are looking at an Australian left-arm pacer as a possible replacement,” the source told The New Indian Express.

“All members had returned negative RT PCR results before departure. A new RT PCR test was undertaken upon arrival at Abu Dhabi, which are negative as well,” it added.

Chennai Super Kings players are also expected to land in Dubai on Saturday. “Now that the Test match is off, we are looking to get the CSK boys into Dubai tomorrow,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told ANI on Friday.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is also arranging a charter flight to get Virat Kohli and Mohammed Siraj into Dubai on Sunday morning, ahead of the resumption of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. They will undergo a 6-day quarantine period before joining the team bubble.

“Yes, we have arranged a charter flight for Virat and Siraj, both of them will be flying out at 11:30 PM UK time on Saturday and they will reach Dubai early Sunday morning. Safe transit of players is the utmost priority for RCB. They will undergo 6-day quarantine there before joining the team bubble,” an RCB source told ANI.

Earlier on Friday, the 5th Test match between England and India was cancelled in Manchester. The BCCI and ECB held several rounds of discussion to find a way to play the Test match, however, the outbreak of COVID-19 in the Indian team contingent forced the decision of calling off the game.

The 14th season of the IPL, which was postponed in May this year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, will resume on September 19 in Dubai with a blockbuster clash between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

  • IPL 2021: Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers in death overs, says Trent Boult

    By ANI
CHENNAI: After the 13-run win over SunRisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, Mumbai Indians pacer Trent Boult lauded fellow seamer Jasprit Bumrah and said he is one of the best bowlers in the slog overs.

Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma played knocks of 40 and 32, but SRH managed to maintain a stranglehold as Mumbai Indians were restricted to 150/5. In response, SRH was bundled out for 137 despite a flying start given by Jonny Bairstow.

SRH needed 47 runs in the last five overs and Vijay Shankar whacked back to back sixes in Krunal Pandya’s third over to reduce the gap. But SRH was again put on the back foot when they lost two wickets in the 18th over and the team’s hopes were finally down when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Shankar with 17 required off seven balls.

SRH collapsed from 129/5 to 137 in nine balls as Boult and Jasprit Bumrah denied the batsmen any chance of slogging in the death overs.

Bumrah bowled economically and just gave 14 runs in his fours overs including a wicket while Boult returned with the figures of 3-28. Spinner Rahul Chahar also bagged three wickets for MI.

“It’s great to see a guy like that operate. How clear he is with what he is doing with the ball throughout the whole spell. But at the death, I personally believe he is one of the best bowlers in the death overs. He makes my job a lot easier but it’s nice to be on the right side of those situations and hopefully, we can get a bit of momentum in the tournament,” Boult said at the post-match press conference.

“It’s hard to pin-point one performance there. A lot of credit to the whole side for hanging in there. We knew we were a few runs short of the par score. But we also knew that this is a pitch where you can fight. And you get a couple of wickets, you can really get back in the chase. I thought a couple of direct hits from Hardik (Pandya) and the three wickets from Rahul (Chahar) were important when we were bowling. And then Bumrah there, bowling his four overs for only 14 was pretty amazing,” he added.

New Zealand pacer further talked about the difference between the wickets in Mumbai and Chennai.

“The contrast between Wankhede and Chepauk Stadium is quite considerable. It looks like its swinging around nicely and it’s a perfect surface in Mumbai. Here as a pace bowler, you got to be extremely accurate. Key has really been our ability to bowl dot balls and keep pushing the run rate,” Boult said.

Boult also shared his views over their first-leg matches in Chennai.

“I think it’s very unique. It gives us a chance to settle at the venue. But the key would be to obviously read the conditions quickly as possible and make the most of them really. So, it’s a unique situation. We’ve got five here, 4 in Delhi, move around a little bit. But, I think especially in the first half of the tournament you obviously get on the right side of a couple of results and like I touched on earlier, it’s nice to get those couple of wins in the last two matches,” he said.

  • Jasprit Bumrah is your trump card, have to use it in an aggressive manner: Zaheer Khan

    By ANI
CHENNAI: Zaheer Khan, Director of Cricket Operations, Mumbai Indians on Monday said the last edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was a tipping point in Ishan Kishan’s career and the left-handed batsman has just flourished from there.

Mumbai Indians lost the opening game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Friday and now the side would lock horns against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Tuesday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

“Ishan Kishan is looking assured, he is looking calmer. When you are growing as a cricketer, you are trying to make that impact at the highest level, you have that tipping point. The last year was a tipping point for Ishan when he played that knock against RCB, he just flourished from there, he is in the same zone, he is going about his business, he is making sure that he is continuing his processes and spending enough time in the nets,” said Zaheer during a virtual press conference on Monday.

Before IPL 2021, Ishan had made his T20I debut for India and he played a match-winning knock in his very first match on the big stage.

“Well, I think giving them freedom to express themselves is very important. As a setup, we encourage that and we encourage each and every individual to bring out their original self in the middle. When you do not have that clatter of thought, you are able to express yourself freely. We do have healthy discussions around what they can add to their game, as cricketers, you always look to evolve yourself to try and understand the game better. We try hard, we are lucky enough to have a squad in hand who keep pushing the boundaries,” said Zaheer.

When asked about Jasprit Bumrah not bowling enough at the start of the innings, Zaheer said: “Bumrah is your trump card, when you have a trump card, then you have to use it in an aggressive manner, when you really need it. That is how the process revolves around Jasprit, he can turn the game around at any stage.”

Opening batsman Chris Lynn played a knock of 49 runs in the first match against RCB, but his spot is not guaranteed anymore as wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock has finished his quarantine and he would be available for the match against KKR.

“It is a good headache to have as a management, we are lucky to have such a squad where people are waiting to grab their opportunity. We have players who keep pushing each other so that is the exciting part. All I can say is as management when you have these types of headaches, it is assuring that you are well set in the tournament,” said Zaheer.

The 27-year-old Bumrah missed the final two Tests and the whole of the white-ball leg of the series against England as he had taken leave for his marriage on March 15.

MI skipper and India limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, his brother Krunal and Suryakumar Yadav on Monday joined the squad at the team hotel.

The four players were on national duty for the ODI series against England, which India won 2-1 after defeating the tourists by seven runs in the third match in Pune on Sunday.

  • It is unfortunate for neutral umpires not to come on foreign tours: Bumrah

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Saturday made a controversial decision not to allow Australian captain Tim Paine to be given a run-out after the end of the first day of the second bowling day Test match against Australia, saying that it is sad that the current time In neutral neutral umpires cannot come on foreign tours. “It is very unfortunate that unbiased umpires cannot come on foreign tours for Test matches,” Bumrah said in a press conference held after the first day’s play against a close run-out appeal against Tim Paine.

He, however, said soon after that the team’s focus is not focused on Penn’s decision to run out. Australian captain Tim Paine was actually a victim of a run-out during the first innings today. When the decision of Penn’s run out went to the third umpire, Penn was run out from the angle of the camera, while from the other angle he was seen a little inside the crease.

During this, the third umpire Paul Wilson said that he has no strong evidence of this, in which the pens are seen outside the crease, so he is giving a decision of not-out. After this decision of the third umpire, Ajinkya Rahane, who was captaining the team in place of regular captain Virat, was also seen talking to the umpire on the field, and two-three Indian fielders also raised questions about this decision.

Ravichandran Ashwin stole the show with two wickets while pacer Jasprit Bumrah provided India an early breakthrough to put Australia on the back foot in the first session of the Boxing Day Test here at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Joe Burns (0) failed to capitalise on the start he got in the last Test as India drew the first blood. If Bumrah provided India an early breakthrough, it was Ashwin who stole the show with his two wickets (Wade and Smith) in the first session.

The Tim Paine-led side’s score read 65/3 at the end of the first session on the first day. Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head are currently unbeaten on 26 and four runs respectively.

Ashwin then dismissed Steve Smith for a duck to put visitors on top. The Indian spinner’s back to back wickets left Australia at 38/3. Head then joined Labuschagne and the duo ensured that the hosts did not lose any more wickets before the end of the first session.
