    It’s the 10th International Yoga Day and led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the whole country is celebrating the ancient practice of yoga which originated in India. The celebration of course goes beyond the national boundaries with Yoga gaining popularity globally. Here are 10 LIVE updates on World Yoga Day 2024. 

    1. PM Narendra Modi led the way and performed Yoga at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on the banks of Srinagar’s Dal Lake in Jammu and Kashmir, on International Day of Yoga on Friday. The event was slightly delayed due to rains in Srinagar. Check out the video below:

    2. While addressing an event in Srinagar, the Prime Minister said that India’s proposal regarding the celebration of International Yoga Day at the United Nations was supported by 177 nations. “Today, from the land of Kashmir, I congratulate everyone around the world on International Yoga Day! Ten years ago, I proposed the celebration of International Yoga Day at the United Nations. India’s proposal was supported by 177 nations, which is a record in itself. In 2015, on Kartavyapath in Delhi, 35,000 people performed Yogasanas together,” he said.

    3. Talking about the global popularity of Yoga and how it has boosted the economy, PM Modi said, “In the last 10 years, the expansion of Yoga has changed the perception related to Yoga. Today, the world is seeing a new Yoga economy going forward. From Rishikesh and Kashi to Kerala, we can witness a new trend of Yoga Tourism emerging in India. People from all over the world are coming to India in pursuit of learning authentic yoga. Accordingly, sectors related to hospitality, tourism, apparel, etc. are booming from the huge inflow of people. This is creating new avenues for employment opportunities for youth.”

    4. At this momentous occasion, the Prime Minister spoke about the tremendous scope of yoga and how it has been embraced by people across age groups. He reminded the world of Charlotte Chopin, a 101-year-old woman Yoga teacher from France who was awarded the Padma Shri this year. PM Modi also said that the number of people doing yoga all over the world is constantly increasing. PM Modi also clicked selfies with yoga enthusiasts in Srinagar.

    5. Across the country, several yoga events are taking place. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar performed yoga with foreign diplomats in Delhi and said that “yoga has been a great bonding point for different cultures”. In Lucknow, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel led the Yoga Day celebrations. Many bureaucrats participated in the event. 

    6. Home Minister Amit Shah also took part in a yoga event in Gujarat.

    7. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has come up with a unique initiative, ‘Yoga for Space’, to mark the International Day of Yoga 2024. Under this initiative, all scientists and officials of ISRO will perform Yoga together as per the Common Yoga Protocol guidelines.

    8. In December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring June 21 as ‘International Day Of Yoga.’

    9. Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, known for her fitness and amazing yoga videos, said that PM Narendra Modi was largely responsible for the global popularity of yoga. Talking to IANS, Shilpa told IANS, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has played a pivotal role in bringing yoga to the global stage. His efforts, including the establishment of International Yoga Day, have significantly increased worldwide awareness and appreciation of yoga’s benefits. This has inspired millions to embrace yoga, fostering a healthier and more balanced lifestyle globally.”

    10. This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Self and Society’, emphasizes yoga’s vital role in fostering both individual well-being and societal harmony.

  • Yoga has gained tremendous popularity globally: PM Modi

    NEW DELHI: Ahead of the eighth International Yoga Day on June 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that yoga has gained tremendous popularity globally.

    People from different walks of life including leaders, CEOs, sportspersons and actors regularly practice yoga and talk about how it has helped them, he said in a tweet.

    Modi also posted a video which highlighted various details and benefits of the ancient Indian practice and also carried snippets of his remarks at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Subsequently, June 21 was adopted as International Yoga Day.

  • Ex-Servicemen also enthusiastically celebrated the 7th International Yoga Day

    On the occasion of the seventh International Yoga Day on 21st June, the Directorate of Sainik Welfare Chhattisgarh Raipur along with all the District Sainik Welfare Offices of the state celebrated Virtual Yoga Day. District Sainik Welfare Officer Commander Ranjit Singh Bisht said that the officers-employees of District Sainik Welfare Department and ex-servicemen residing in the district enthusiastically participated in this Yoga Day program following the instructions of Kovid.

    On this occasion, he said that on 21st June, Yoga Day is celebrated all over the world. Yoga is an important contribution in keeping the body healthy and it has been told by India of the whole world. Today the whole world knows the message of keeping yoga healthy. Today, when the whole world is fighting the corona pandemic, yoga remains a ray of hope.

      
  • Farmers wave black flags outside Yoga Day event venue with BJP’s Babita Phogat in attendance

    CHARKHI DADRI: Farmers protesting against the Centre’s three farm laws on Monday waved black flags when BJP leader Babita Phogat was attending an event here related to the International Yoga Day celebrations.

    A group of farmers gathered outside the event venue after Phogat arrived here to take part in the programme.

    Outside the venue of the Janta College stadium, the farmers gathered for a while and raised slogans against the BJP-JJP government and demanded that the Centre roll back the “black farm laws”.

    Police had been deployed in strength to maintain security.

    A farmer leader said that peasants will continue to stage protests and oppose the public functions of the BJP-JJP leaders till the farm laws are rolled back.

    Last month too, the wrestler-turned-politician had also faced a protest by farmers in Charkhi Dadri when she had gone to address public meetings in a few villages.

    Phogat had joined the BJP in 2019, but lost her first election.

    She was later appointed as chairperson of Haryana Women Development Corporation by the BJP-JJP government.

    Farmers have been opposing public functions of BJP-JJP leaders in the state over the laws.

    The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of various farmers’ unions, is spearheading the stir against the Centre’s new farm laws.

    Farmers have been camping at Delhi’s borders since November last year demanding that the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 be rolled back and a new law made to guarantee minimum support price for crops.

  • Over 6.27 lakh people administered Covid vaccine on International Yoga Day: Anil Vij

    CHANDIGARH: A mega anti-Covid vaccination drive was conducted in Haryana on International Yoga Day with 6.27 lakh people receiving their jabs on Monday, state Health Minister Anil Vij said.

    He had told reporters on Sunday that a target has been set to vaccinate 2.5 lakh people during this drive.

    However, in a tweet on Monday, Vij informed that 6.27 lakh people have got their jabs.

    “Under the mega vaccination day today, 6.27 lakh people in Haryana have been given Covid vaccine,” Vij said.

    He said that in Gurgaon alone over one lakh people had received their jab.

    “It is a historic day for the people of Haryana in the efforts made to contain the spread of COVID-19,” the minister said, according to an official statement.

    He thanked health department officials for their effort to vaccinate a large number of people in one day.

    Vij said that so far 76,59,624 eligible beneficiaries have been vaccinated in the state which includes over 10.32 lakh people in Gurgaon.

    Notably, people aged 18 and above are eligible to receive vaccine.

    He also shared that so far 5,56,030 beneficiaries have been vaccinated in Ambala while 2,76,061 beneficiaries have been vaccinated in Bhiwani till date.

    Among other districts, as many as 2,65,284 beneficiaries have been vaccinated in Panchkula till date while 2,73,029 beneficiaries have been vaccinated in Panipat and 1,97,691 in Charkhi Dadri, he said.

    The state on Monday recorded 29 more Covid-related fatalities, taking the death toll to 9,275, while 162 new cases pushed the infection tally to 7,67,580.

    According to the health department’s daily bulletin, the latest deaths include four each from Panipat and Hisar districts and three from Bhiwani.

    Of the new cases, Jind recorded 29 infections while 19 cases were from Palwal.

    The total active cases in the state stands at 2,337, it said.

    So far, 7,55,968 people have recovered from the infection.

    The recovery rate stands at 98.49 per cent, it said.

    The positivity rate is 7.87 percent, the added.

  • COVID-19: Record 16.41 lakh vaccinated in MP on Monday, gifts galore for people taking jabs

    BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh set a new record for itself by vaccinating 16.41 lakh people against COVID-19 on Monday as part of a mega campaign to coincide with International Yoga Day, with officials saying the target set was 10 lakh.

    They said MP’s feat during the day accounted for almost 20 per cent of all inoculations conducted against the coronavirus infection in the country during the day.

    An elated Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the vaccination drive was such a success on Monday due to the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his decision to give free vaccines to the states.

    “Madhya Pradesh has topped other states in terms of vaccination. Thanks to all,” the CM said, adding that the campaign to inoculate as many people as possible in quick time to ward off a possible third wave would continue beyond June 21.

    Officials said over one lakh ‘corona volunteers’ are playing an active role in creating awareness about the pandemic and ways to tackle it, while 7,000 centres have been set up to administer doses, which are manned by 35,000 staff.

    They added that the chief minister had ensured over 19 lakh vaccine doses were made available in the state.

    Launching the campaign earlier in the day in Datia, the CM had said vaccination was the only way to defeat the virus, adding that chances of anyone getting infected after inoculation were rare, and symptoms, in such a scenario, would be very mild and recovery really fast.

    Chouhan took part in the campaign in Datia, Bhopal and Budhni, which is his Assembly seat, while in charge ministers attended the drive in their respective districts, officials said.

    Officials said a three-day vaccination campaign will start from July 1 to motivate people to get vaccinated.

    More than 80 lakh vaccine doses, the highest in a single day, were administered across the country on Monday as the revised guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination came into effect, the Union Health Ministry said.

    India’s cumulative COVID-19 vaccination coverage has reached 28. 33 crore since January 16, it said.

    “We are offering free bus tickets to passengers getting vaccinated at the Navlaka vaccination centre for one-time journey,” Prime Route Bus Owners Association president Govind Sharma told PTI.

    “We have suffered huge losses due to COVID-19. Therefore, we are praying that this vaccination drive gets successful and this pandemic gets over soon,” he said.

    Sharma informed at the Navlaka centre, the association is also getting drivers, conductors and cleaners vaccinated against coronavirus.

    Officials said for the first time, vaccination centres have been set up at three shopping malls in Indore.

    The owner of these malls, Karan Chhabra, informed that they are offering selfie sticks and other gifts on the spot to those getting jabs at these centres.

    Those getting vaccinated at these sites will be eligible to take part in a lucky draw where a refrigerator and other gifts are on offer, he said.

    People coming to get vaccines are also being offered snacks.

  • Yoga remains ‘ray of hope’ as world fights Covid, says PM Modi

    NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said yoga remains a “ray of hope” as the world fights the coronavirus pandemic and asserted that in these difficult times it has become a source of inner strength.

    Addressing the 7th International Yoga Day programme, Modi also said that in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), India has taken another important step and now the world is going to get the power of M-Yoga application, which will have many videos of yoga training based on Common Yoga Protocol available in different languages of the world.

    This will help us in making the ‘One World, One Health’ motto successful, he said.

    “At a time when the whole world is fighting the coronavirus pandemic, yoga remains a ray of hope,” Modi said.

    The prime minister noted that there may not have been any major public events in countries around the world and in India for around a year and a half, but the enthusiasm for Yoga Day has not diminished.

    For most of the countries of the world, Yoga Day is not their age-old cultural festival and in this difficult time, people could have forgotten about it and ignored it, but on the contrary, people’s enthusiasm for yoga has increased, he said.

    “When the unseen coronavirus knocked on the doors of the world, no country was prepared for it in terms of resources, capability and mental state. We all have seen that in such difficult times, yoga has become a great source of inner strength,” he said.

    Yoga shows us the way from stress to strength and from negativity to creativity, he asserted.

    Modi noted that the medical science focuses as much on “healing” as on treatment, and said yoga plays a role in healing.

    Many schools now begin their online classes with yogic exercises like pranayam, he said, adding that this prepares children physically to deal with Covid.

    The prime minister expressed confidence that yoga will continue playing its preventive, as well as promotive role in healthcare of masses.

  • Ayush Society of Bihar govt starts social media campaign on yoga

    PATNA: The Bihar State Ayush Society under the health department has started a unique social media campaign to encourage people to adopt yoga for a healthy lifestyle. The 10-day campaign ‘Bihar With Yoga’ will continue till June 21 which is observed as International Yoga Day. Aimed at creating awareness on the benefits of yoga, the campaign will be carried out on various social media platforms.

    “Yoga now gas a global centerstage and is helping people transform their lives without any boundaries. It has now been adopted by the modern medical science as both a cure and treatment,” a senior official from the health department said. 

    “The department aims at reaching all sections of the society and has chosen a medium best suited to achieve this goal. Using modern technology, the ancient yogic methodology is being imparted on a large scale to encourage and motivate people to adopt yoga for a healthy life,” said the campaign coordinator Ravindra Jha. 

    He further added that the illustrious and appealing messages along with creative images will be shared on the official social media handles of the department to sensitise people on the inclusion go yoga in their lives. 

    Apart from generating mass awareness, the department will pool in trained instructors and yoga gurus to teach asanas. “By encouraging the ancient practice of yoga, we strive to shape milieu where each individual is mentally and physically healthy to contribute to the growth of the nation,” Jha said.

    All registrants will be provided with a digital admit card. In addition, T-shirts will be provided to the first 100 registrants of every district.
    To participate in the ‘Chhattisgarh Virtual Yoga Marathon’ organized by the Chhattisgarh Yoga Commission under the Social Welfare Department, the applicant has to share his photo/video on his social media accounts with the hashtag #yogwithchhattisgarh.
