    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Social media platform Twitter has pulled down filmmaker Leena Manimekalai’s tweet about her documentary “Kaali”, which is currently at the centre of a controversy, in response to “a legal demand”.

In the said tweet posted on July 2, the Toronto-based director had shared the poster of “Kaali”, which depicted the titular goddess smoking and holding an LGBTQ flag.

“This Tweet from @LeenaManimekali has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand,” read a message in place of the original post. It is unknown when the tweet was taken down by the microblogging site.

On Tuesday, the Delhi Police and the Uttar Pradesh Police filed separate FIRs against Manimekalai over the controversial poster.

Further, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa had urged the Canadian authorities to take down all “provocative material” related to the film after it received complaints from leaders of the Hindu community in Canada about the “disrespectful depiction” of Hindu gods.

“Kaali” was showcased as part of the ‘Under the Tent’ project at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. Under attack for the poster, Manimekalai had on Monday said she will continue to use her voice fearlessly till she is alive.

“I have nothing to lose. Till the time I live, I wish to live with a voice that speaks what I believe without fear. If the price for that is my life, it can be given,” she wrote in a tweet in Tamil in response to an article on the controversy. The filmmaker also urged people to watch the documentary to understand the context behind the poster.

  • We have ended illegal mining in state: Punjab minister Harjot Bains

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Mines and Geology Minister Harjot Singh Bains Saturday claimed his department has ended illegal sand mining in the state.

He also said the daily extraction of sand and gravel in legal manner has crossed one lakh metric tonne.

“We have ended illegal mining in Punjab through our hard work day and night. Being the mining minister, I can say illegal mining has ended in Punjab,” Bains said in a video message.

“We have broken the back of illegal mining,” he claimed.

He said the government is prompt on acting on cases of illegal mining, and an FIR is also lodged whenever a complaint is received.

The menace of illegal sand mining was among key issues during the 2022 state assembly polls and the Aam Aadmi Party had targeted the previous government over the issue during the poll campaign.

Bains said the daily average extraction of sand and gravel in last year was 35,000-40,000 metric tonne.

“But we took it to over one lakh MT. Yesterday, 1,03,000 MT tonne extraction was done in Punjab,” he said.

He further said that in May last year, only 8 lakh MT legal mining of sand and gravel was done.

“But in May this year, we have already crossed 18.50 lakh MT of legal mining,” he said.

The minister said that the legal mining of sand and gravel increased considerably despite the fact that only four out of the total seven blocks of mining were operational.

However, shortly after Bains’s claims of ending illegal mining, Congress MLA Pargat Singh shared videos on his Twitter handle and claimed illegal mining was taking place at various places.

“@harjotbains ji, Illegal mining continues at various places in Punjab. I am sharing another video of blatant mining in your own backyard in Taraf Mazri, Anandpur Sahib. I request you to please take care of your own area first before making tall claims and indulging in PR exercises,” Pargat tweeted.

Bains replied, “2.5X increase in Legal Mining. That’s why i am saying kindly check the data of yours term & ours. Have summoned report of this site, will share it. Our intentions are pure, it’s my mission to make it all clean, we have done a lot in two months, will do much more. I pledge it.”

  • FIR against ex-MP Nilesh Rane, others for obstructing public servant from discharging duty

    By PTI

MUMBAI: Police have registered an FIR against former MP Nilesh Rane and others for gathering outside a court in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, in violation of the COVID-19 norms, and allegedly obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty, an official said on Wednesday.

Nilesh Rane, the son of Union minister Narayan Rane, and some other people on Tuesday assembled near the court, which had rejected the bail plea of his brother and state BJP MLA Nitesh Rane in a case, he said.

An argument had allegedly taken place between Nilesh Rane and police near the court.

Later, an FIR was registered on Tuesday evening at Oras police station against the former MP and others under IPC sections 186 (voluntarily obstructing any public servant in discharge of his functions), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), and the Disaster Management Act, the official said.

Nitesh Rane is facing an attempt to murder case in Sindhudurg, where a court on Tuesday denied bail to the legislator, saying his application for relief was “premature and not maintainable”.

The MLA later moved the Bombay High Court to seek bail and in his plea claimed he had been implicated and that this was a “classic case of political vendetta or rivalry at the behest of the ruling dispensation” against him and his father.

The plea further alleged that people belonging to opposition parties in Maharashtra and holding public positions are being “victimised” by the state government (comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) by way of registration of false criminal cases.
