  • T20 World Cup 2024: Nicholas Pooran’s Thunderous Blow Rattles Mark Wood, Video Goes Viral – Watch | Cricket News

The 2024 T20 World Cup has already witnessed some monumental performances, but Nicholas Pooran’s blistering onslaught against defending champions England on Thursday night will undoubtedly go down as one of the tournament’s most electrifying moments. In a clash that had fans on the edge of their seats, the West Indies’ flamboyant left-hander etched his name into cricketing folklore with a humongous six that left the English bowlers shellshocked.

    Fireworks at the Perth Stadium

After a steady start from openers Brandon King and Johnson Charles, the West Indies innings kicked into overdrive when Pooran strode to the crease. The talented Trinidadian didn’t take long to find his rhythm, caressing a couple of delightful boundaries to get his eye in. However, it was his colossal 95-meter maximum off the bowling of Mark Wood that truly set the Perth Stadium alight.

Wood, renowned for his searing pace, attempted to cramp Pooran for room with a well-directed length delivery. But the left-hander’s incredible hand-eye coordination and brute power came to the fore as he nonchalantly flicked his wrists to dispatch the Englishman’s thunderbolt over the deepest part of the midwicket boundary. The cricket ball seemed to hang in the air for an eternity before eventually crash-landing into the ecstatic West Indian fan club behind the ropes, sparking pandemonium in the stands.

    England’s Ashes Revival Hopes Dent

While Pooran’s stroke of genius was the undeniable highlight, the bigger picture indicates that this result could have far-reaching implications for England’s hopes of retaining their T20 crown. The defending champions came into this marquee event riding the crest of a wave after their remarkable Ashes triumph over Australia. However, this damaging loss to the free-scoring West Indies has severely dented their prospects of progressing from a tricky group that also includes the likes of India and South Africa.

For the Caribbeans, Pooran’s pyrotechnics were merely a continuation of the form that saw him dismantle Afghanistan in their previous outing. After Brandon King’s unfortunate departure due to a groin injury, the stage was set for the elegant southpaw to take center stage. And take center stage he did – in the most emphatic fashion imaginable.

How Australia’s Win Helped England Qualify For Super 8 Stage?

England was eager for Australia to win as it would have helped them qualify for the Super 8s. If Australia had lost the game, Scotland would have qualified alongside Australia, as Australia had already secured qualification with 3 wins and 6 points. However, if Scotland had won, they would have accumulated 7 points and qualified. Despite Scotland also finishing with 5 points from four matches, England’s superior net run rate ensured their advancement to the Super 8s.

    Australia’s Tricky Chase

Australia successfully chased down the target of 181 runs in a thrilling encounter, reaching 186/5 in 19.4 overs against Scotland. The match remained closely contested as Scotland fought hard until the end to stay in contention. Despite reducing Australia to 60/3 at one point, Scotland’s efforts weren’t enough to contain Australia’s key batsmen of the tournament, Travis Head (68) and Marcus Stoinis (59), who once again rose to the occasion. Initially asked to bat, Scotland had set a competitive total of 180/5, showing resilience against the formidable Australian side.

  • Five outfits of Queen Elizabeth II that had hidden messages

    By ANI

LONDON: 1. Queen Elizabeth II’s Wedding Dress

According to many documentaries and Palace staff, the Queen’s wedding gown had a very special message. Curated by Joanna Marshner, the gown was paid for by ration coupons given by ordinary women post War.

When the Queen married Prince Philip, Britain was still recovering from the economic losses incurred in War and it was difficult to pay for such a heavy gown. So the Queen used her ration coupons given to her by the Government along with a few sent to her by women across the country to pay for the gown.

The dress, made of satin, had many spring flowers, which gave a message of hope and renewal to the British nationals at that point.

    2. Queen Elizabeth’s outfit after Brexit

Right after Britain opted to exit European Union, the Queen attended the first opening parliament in 2017 right after the decision was made public. She wore a blue and yellow outfit, which are the featured colours in the European Union Flag. Many believe that the message Queen wanted to give was her disapproval of the decision.

    3. Queen’s outfit for her COVID-19 address to the nation

The Queen chose a green coloured outfit for addressing the nation as the pandemic made waves across the world. Many say that the colour green was picked by her to symbolize growth and renewal. The Queen also wore a diamond and turquoise brooch. The same brooch that Queen Mary gifted her upon her death in 1953. The brooch is considered to be a symbol of protection.

The Royal family is always neutral when it comes to politics however the Queen, has, on a number of occasions, given a message through her outfit of whether she approves or disapproves of a certain decision or person.

When the Queen met Donald Trump, she wore a ruby tiara that was originally gifted to her on her wedding day by the people of Burma (now Myanmar). The Burmese ruby tiara symbolises protection from evil and illness.

  • Queen Elizabeth II privately marks her 96th birthday

    By Associated Press

LONDON: Queen Elizabeth II is marking her 96th birthday privately on Thursday, retreating to the Sandringham estate in eastern England that has offered the monarch and her late husband, Prince Philip, a refuge from the affairs of state.

Elizabeth is expected to spend the day at the estate’s Wood Farm cottage, a personal sanctuary where she also spent her first Christmas since Philip’s death in April 2021. Philip loved the cottage, in part because it is close to the sea, she said in February when hosting a rare public event at Sandringham.

“I think the queen’s approach to birthdays very much embodies her keep calm and carry on attitude,” said Emily Nash, the royal editor at HELLO! magazine. ”She doesn’t like a fuss.”

This birthday comes during the queen’s platinum jubilee year, marking her 70 years on the throne. While Thursday will be low-key, public celebrations will take place June 2-5, when four days of jubilee festivities have been scheduled to coincide with the monarch’s official birthday.

The day marks yet another milestone in a tumultuous period for the monarch, who has sought to cement the future of the monarchy amid signs of her age and controversy in the family. After recovering from a bout of Covid-19 earlier this year, the queen’s public appearances have been limited by unspecified “mobility issues.” Prince Andrew’s multi-million-pound settlement with a woman who accused him of sexual exploitation also caused unwanted headlines for the royal family.

But the queen got an early birthday treat last week, when grandson Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, paid her a joint visit for the first time since they stepped away from frontline royal duties and moved to California in 2020. Harry, in an interview with NBC, said his grandmother was “on great form,” though he added that he wanted to make sure she was “protected” and had “the right people around her.”

Britain’s longest-serving monarch, Elizabeth has spent much of the past two years at Windsor Castle, west of London, where she took refuge during the pandemic. It’s been a little over a year since the death of Philip, her spouse of more than 70 years.

The queen said goodbye during a scaled-down funeral in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Coronavirus restrictions in place at the time limited the service to 30 mourners and forced the monarch to sit alone — a poignant reminder of how she would spend her remaining years.

Last month, with the pandemic on the wane and restrictions, eased, the queen shrugged off recent health issues to attend a service of thanksgiving for Philip at Westminster Abbey, entering the abbey on the arm of Andrew, her second son.

Her choice of escorts was seen as a vote of support for Andrew following his legal settlement. But the in-person appearance was rare. The Queen has increasingly relied on Prince Charles to take on public engagements in the twilight of her reign, most recently offering alms to senior citizens at the Royal Maundy service at St. George’s Chapel.

Charles took on the traditional task of distributing specially minted coins to pensioners who were being recognized for service to the church and the local community. This year, 96 men and 96 women received the coins, one for each year of the queen’s life.

“She has a lot coming up in the next few months, so it absolutely makes sense that she enjoys her birthday quietly, privately at Sandringham,″ Nash said. “She will no doubt have quite a lot of time to reflect on her happy times there with Prince Philip over the years. But this is really someone whose focus is still on the future, even at the age of 96.”

  • Poor contributions by Indian players has let Mumbai Indians down: Ex-England cricketer Mark Butcher

    By IANS

LONDON: Former England cricketer Mark Butcher feels that the lacklustre performance of Indian players, unlike the previous editions, has let down the defending champions Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL 2021.

Mumbai’s batting has been off-colour and it’s the reason behind their slide this season. The key Indian players like captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Panday, and Krunal Panday have failed to take responsibility and post big totals.

Mumbai Indians, who are currently in the seventh position in the points table, face Rajasthan Royals — placed just one place above them, on Tuesday evening in Sharjah. The Rohit-led Mumbai Indians came into this match with a defeat against Delhi Capitals while Rajasthan Royals stunned Chennai Super Kings in their last clash.

“If all your eyes are turning towards Quinton de Kock at the top and if all eyes are turning towards Trent Boult as a wicket-taker in the powerplay, th’n you’ve got a problem. Mumbai Indians’ success has been built around the fact that they’haven’t looked to overseas players to win the tournament. They have great overseas players, but the Indian players have come to the party and done the job,” said Butcher on Crick’t.com’s show Man vs Machine.

“Rohit Sharma hasn’t made the ‘uns you’d expect him to make.’Yes, he’s a brilliant captain.’Yes, he’ll probably become India’s T20I captain in the near future. But they need runs from him. Ishan Kishan has found himself out of the team, such has been his form. Contribution from Indian players is just as important, in fact, more important when it comes to winning IPL and qualifying than anything else,” he added.

In the past, Mumbai have qualified for the playoffs and won titles after being in improbable positions and the former England batsman feels the defending champions have what it takes to pull a rabbit out of the hat once again.

“They have pulled rabbits out of their hat’ before. It’s in the feature of their success in the IPL. Their fans would be confident that they can beat these two teams – Rajasthan Royals — they took them down in April,” said Butcher.

“They would also think Sunrisers are there for the taki’g as well. It’s simply a case of concentrating on the job in your hands. No point worrying about ifs and buts. Win this one and the next one. Get two points on the board and then worry about the net run-rate,” he added.

    By PTI

DUBAI: The Delhi Capitals players who were part of the Indian squad for the Test series against England landed here safely on Sunday for the upcoming IPL, the franchise said.

  • English FA commission independent probe into Euro final mayhem

    By AFP
LONDON: The English Football Association have commissioned an independent investigation after ticketless fans fought their way into Wembley before the Euro 2020 final.

It has been reported that thousands of supporters gained entry to the stadium by storming the gates prior to Italy’s win against England.

There were ugly scenes in the stands and concourses during the game as fans with tickets clashed with those who had broken in.

Outside Wembley, it has been estimated that 200,000 people were in the area for a match with a 67,500 capacity, with the drunken and violent scenes marring the showpiece event.

FA chiefs on Monday said they had informed the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) of the review over the weekend and vowed to identify those responsible for the “disgraceful scenes” both before and during the match.

“We are determined to fully understand what happened outside and then inside Wembley Stadium at the UEFA EURO 2020 Final on Sunday 11 July 2021,” the statement said.

“We informed DCMS at the weekend that an independent review led by Baroness Casey of Blackstock has been commissioned to report on the facts and circumstances involved. It will speak to all parties concerned and include external experts.

“A key emphasis of the findings will be to ensure that lessons are learned and such disgraceful scenes are never able to be repeated.

“We continue to work with the relevant authorities in support of their efforts to identify those responsible and hold them to account.”

Police have since released CCTV images of some of those they want to question.

England trio Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were racially abused on social media platforms after penalties in the decisive shoot-out following the 1-1 draw.

The behaviour of both those who forced their way into Wembley and the online trolls has been widely condemned.

The shocking incidents have raised doubts about the chances of a successful proposed joint bid by the United Kingdom and Ireland to host the 2030 World Cup.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel shoot paused amid surge in COVID cases in UK

    By PTI
LONDON: The recent rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the UK has forced HBO to halt the production of its much-anticipated “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon”.

According to Deadline, the UK shoot of the show has been paused for two days after a positive case in zone A, which includes cast and crew.

Based on author George R R Martin’s book “Fire & Blood”, “House of Dragons” is set over 300 years prior to the events of “Game of Thrones”.

It and tells the story of House Targaryen and the Targaryen civil war, known as the “Dance of the Dragons.”

The surge has also led to the cancellation of actor-director Kenneth Branagh’s UK theater production, a revival of “The Browning Version” by Terence Rattigan.

The play was due to be staged at London’s Riverside Studios in August.

In a note sent to the ticket holders, the venue said the production was “no longer viable” due to the an “increasing number of Covid-enforced absences” and that refunds would be issued.

Producers said number of team members tested positive, some of whom were symptomatic, despite COVID-19 protocols being observed.

Shoot of Netflix’s popular series “Bridgerton” was shut down twice over the weekend because of positive cases on the set.

The streamer’s feature adaptation of “Matilda” has also halted production due to the virus.

On Sunday, the UK recorded a further 48,161 coronavirus cases and 25 deaths.

This followed an excess of 50,000 cases recorded on Friday and Saturday, the highest since mid-January.

  • IPL 2021: There is a family sort of vibe with Delhi Capitals, says Chris Woakes

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: England pacer Chris Woakes said he is enjoying his time and having a family sort of vibe with his new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals.

Woakes made his debut for Capitals in their opening clash against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on April 10. He returned with figures of 2-18 in his three overs.

“Yeah, always nice to, I suppose to start with a new team. Obviously, played with a couple of IPL teams but there is a real good feel here, good family sort of vibe going on,” Woakes said in a video posted on Delhi Capitals official Twitter handle.

Delhi Capitals made a winning start of the campaign under new skipper Rishabh Pant as they defeated CSK by five wickets.

“It is too early, it’s always good to get off to a good start. Winning your first game gives everyone a bit of confidence. You know, everyone is eager to get going, to begin at the start of the IPL but it’s just one performance. We know there’s a lot of games ahead and some good teams to play against. So, we won’t be getting ahead of ourselves but I think everyone in the group is confident and looking forward to the next few games,” Woakes said.

The opening game saw both Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan send the CSK bowlers on a leather hunt and Shaw’s approach impressed head coach Ricky Ponting as the batsman had suffered a loss of form earlier in the year during the tour of Australia.

Delhi Capitals will next take on Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium later in the day.
