  • Emmys postponed until January over Hollywood strikes

    By AFP

LOS ANGELES: The Emmy Awards have been postponed by almost four months, organizers said Thursday, as crippling strikes by Hollywood’s actors and writers drag on with no resolution in sight.

Television’s equivalent of the Oscars had been due to take place this September, but will now be held in mid-January next year, broadcaster Fox and the Television Academy wrote in a statement.

“We are pleased to announce that the 75th Emmy Awards will now air on Monday, January 15, 2024,” said a Fox spokesman.

The Emmys are the most significant entertainment event so far to be delayed by Hollywood’s first industry-wide walkout by both actors and writers in more than 60 years.

The last time the Emmys were delayed was in 2001 when the ceremony was postponed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

Due to the ongoing actors’ strike, A-list stars and nominees would not currently be allowed to attend the Emmys, a development that would be disastrous for television ratings.

Writers would also not be allowed to script a monologue or jokes for the telecast’s host and presenters.

The lengthy delay is intended to allow both sides time to resolve their differences.

The various parties have barely spoken through any formal channels since the writers’ strike began 100 days ago.

Writers Guild of America (WGA) negotiators are set to finally return to the bargaining table with studios Friday.

The far larger Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) began its own strike last month and has yet to resume talks with studios.

Both unions are asking for better pay and guarantees that artificial intelligence will not steal their jobs and income, among other demands.

Reports of an Emmys delay had been circulating in recent weeks, but until now the postponement had not been confirmed, nor had any new date announced.

Mid-January lands the Emmys right in the middle of Hollywood’s packed film awards season.

The Emmys, set to take place on Martin Luther King Jr Day, a US federal holiday, will now take place one week after the Golden Globes, and just 24 hours after the Critics Choice Awards.

Nominations for the Oscars will be announced a week later, with the Academy Awards ceremony set for March 10.

The Hollywood strikes have essentially shut down all US movie and television productions, with limited exceptions such as reality and game shows.

Members of SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are barred from promoting their movies and series.

The unions’ demands have focused on dwindling pay in the streaming era and the threat posed to their careers and future livelihoods by artificial intelligence.

Writers and actors say studios have been methodically eroding their salaries for years, making it impossible for all but the very top ranks to earn a living.

They contend that the rise of streaming platforms — which do not generally reveal viewing figures — has deprived them of giant paydays when they create global hits.

Meanwhile, nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced last month, just hours before talks between studios and SAG-AFTRA collapsed.

“Succession,” the HBO drama about an ultra-wealthy family fighting for control of a sinister media empire, led the nominations with a whopping 27 nods, including best drama.

“The Last of Us” became the first live-action video game adaptation to earn major nominations, with 24, while satire “The White Lotus” earned 23 nods.

LOS ANGELES; ‘Rolling in the Deep’ hitmaker Adele will need to expand the size of her award cabinet as she has scooped a string of gongs at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy.

The 34-year-old chart-topping star can add Emmy awards to her endlessly growing list of accolades – to sit nicely alongside her Oscar and multiple Grammy Awards, reports Mirror.co.uk.

On Saturday evening (London time), she was honoured in the USA for her special TV show ‘Adele: One Night Only’ which aired via CBS last year as she prepared to unleash her chart-topper, ’30’. Her show was up for five awards – and won all of them.

According to Mirror.co.uk, the on-off special — which saw the singer interact with fans and celebrities while singing a number of her songs — scooped the Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) award; beating Dave Chappelle for his Netflix show ‘The Closer’.

She also defeated ‘One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett’, Norm Macdonald’s Netflix special, and the Harry Potter 20th anniversary special ‘Return to Hogwarts’.

Mirror further states that Adele’s show also won Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Variety Series or Special and Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction.

Paul Dugdale was awarded Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, and the show also nabbed Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Special.

Adele’s wins give her a chance to become an EGOT winner – if she were to perform on the theatrical stage and win a Tony Award as she now has an Emmy and already has a Golden Globe and Oscar.

  • Emmys 2021: Michaela Coel wins for ‘I May Destroy You’, dedicates award to sexual assault survivors

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Actor-writer Michaela Coel scored an Emmy award in the outstanding writing for a limited series category for her hit and critically-acclaimed series “I May Destroy You” and dedicated her win to “every single survivor of sexual assault”.

In the HBO show inspired by her own story, Coel starred as Arabella, a young woman who seeks to rebuild her life after she recalls being drugged and raped at a local nightclub. The show, which is based on Coel’s personal experience with sexual assault, bested fellow nominees “Mare of Easttown”, “The Queen’s Gambit” and “WandaVision”.

“I May Destroy You” was created, written and co-directed by Coel and Sam Miller and received glowing reviews upon its premiere last June. “I just wrote a little something for writers,” she said during her acceptance speech.

“Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn’t comfortable. I dare you — in a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to in turn feel the need to be constantly visible, for visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success — do not be afraid to disappear from it, from us for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence. I dedicate this story to every single survivor of sexual assault,” she said.

Coel was also nominated in three other categories for producing, directing and acting in the series.

The show received nods in categories like contemporary costumes, music supervision, casting for a limited series, directing for a limited series (twice), supporting actor in a limited series for (Paapa Essiedu), and limited series.

The win for “I May Destroy You” comes months after it was left out at this year’s Golden Globes, which sparked a controversy following a Times investigation of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that revealed the organisation had no Black voters.

Later, the show bagged two trophies in the categories of the miniseries and leading actress for Coel at the BAFTA Awards.
