The Emmy Awards, akin to the Oscars for films and the Grammys for music, stand as a pinnacle of recognition for television and series. The 77th edition of this prestigious award show took place in 2025. Here’s a look at the instances when India has secured Emmy Awards across various categories over the past eight decades.
Subhash Chandra, the founder of Zee TV and a prominent businessman, received the Emmy Award in 2011. He was honored in the Directorate category, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat. This was followed by Ekta Kapoor in 2023, who also won in the same category.
In 2020, the web series “Delhi Crime,” featuring Shefali Shah and Rajesh Tailang, was awarded the International Emmy for Best Drama Series. Ekta Kapoor, the Managing Director of Balaji Telefilms and a Bollywood producer, was recognized with the Directorate Award in 2023. This achievement brought pride to India on a global scale and is considered a significant milestone in Ekta Kapoor’s career.
Vir Das, a 46-year-old stand-up comedian born in Dehradun, was awarded an Emmy for his Netflix show, “Vir Das: Landing.” He received congratulations from all quarters on this occasion and remains the only Indian in history to win an Emmy Award for his show, which was selected for the International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series.
