  • Sansad gherao: Samyukt Kisan Morcha accuses Delhi police of spreading misinformation

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Samyukt Kisan Morcha on Monday accused Delhi Police of spreading misinformation by describing their protest outside Parliament as “Sansad gherao”.

However, there was no reaction from police regarding the allegation.

SKM has already informed that there are no plans of laying siege to the Parliament, and the protests will be peaceful and disciplined, the umbrella body of farmer unions said in a statement.

“Delhi Police is choosing to indulge in deliberate misinformation and SKM asks Delhi Police to desist from the same,” it said.

It condemned social media posters doing rounds, asking for a siege of the Parliament.

“All such calls, genuine or fake, are anti-farmer, and against the interest of the ongoing farmers’ movement. SKM strongly condemns it,” the statement said.

“SKM and the protesting farmers have nothing to do with such calls or any such organisation. SKM calls upon those generating posters and calls for action, to desist from deviating and diverting in any way, the just cause of farmers and their peaceful protests,” it added.

  • Police’s request to reduce people gathering for Parliament protest has been declined: Farmer leader

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Sunday asked farmer unions to reduce the number of people who would gather in front of Parliament to protest against three agri laws from July 22, but it has been declined, a farm union leader said.

“We informed police that every day 200 farmers will go to Parliament from the Singhu border during the Monsoon Session. It will be a peaceful protest and protesters will have identification badges also,” Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Mahasangh national president Shiv Kumar Kakka said.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament will start on Monday and is scheduled to conclude on August 13.

Every detail about each protester will be given to police, including a demonstrator’s Aadhaar card and mobile phone number, he said.

Police have offered an alternative place for the demonstration and have asked unions to reduce the number of protesters.

This request of the police has been declined by farmer leaders, Kakka said.

The Delhi Police will give its reply on Monday and the timing of the protest will also be decided, he said.

“We asked them to review their decision due to the ongoing Covid situation and DDMA guidelines. We informed them that we have not allowed people to gather or demonstrate. No permit has been given yet. Further communication will take place accordingly,” a senior police officer said.

Farmers have been protesting against the central laws since November last year at Delhi border points of Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur.

The legislations were enacted in September last year.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of over 40 farmer unions spearheading the stir against the central laws, has planned that around 200 farmers will protests outside Parliament every day during the period of the Monsoon session.

A tractor parade in Delhi on January 26, that was to highlight the demands of the farmer unions to repeal the, had dissolved into anarchy on the streets of the national capital as thousands of protesters broke through barriers, fought with the police, overturned vehicles and hoisted a religious flag from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort.

The SKM had earlier said at a press conference that two days before the Monsoon session begins, a “chetavani patra” (warning letter) will be issued to all opposition MPs to protest the farm laws inside the House.

Farmers agitating against the three farm laws claim that the legislations will do away with the Minimum Support Price system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporations.

Over 10 rounds of talks with the government, which has been projecting the laws at major agricultural reforms, have failed to break the deadlock between the two parties.

  • Delhi Police to meet farmers’ delegation on Sunday ahead of planned Parliament protest

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Officials of the Delhi Police will meet a delegation of farmers on Sunday ahead of their planned protest in front of parliament during its monsoon session to demand scrapping of the contentious farm laws and a legal guarantee on MSP.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of over 40 farmer unions, has planned that around 200 farmers will hold protests outside parliament every day during the monsoon session.

The leaders have not commented on whether they have permission to hold demonstrations outside parliament but have maintained that the protests will be “peaceful”.

A tractor parade in Delhi on January 26, that was to highlight the demands of farmer unions to repeal three new agri laws, had dissolved into anarchy on the streets of the national capital as thousands of protesters broke through barriers, fought with the police, overturned vehicles and hoisted a religious flag from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort.

A senior police officer said the meeting will take place with a delegation of farmers on Sunday before their proposed protest.

During the meeting, police officials may suggest alternative venues in Delhi for the protest, but nothing concrete has been planned yet.

The SKM had earlier said at a press conference that two days before the monsoon session begins, a “chetavani patra” (warning letter) will be issued to all opposition MPs to protest the farm laws inside the House.

  • Army man arrested for providing classified documents to Pakistan’s ISI

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Two persons, including an Army man, have been arrested under the Official Secrets Act for allegedly providing classified documents to the Inter-Services Intelligence of Pakistan, the Delhi Police said on Thursday.

The Army headquarters have confirmed that the documents in question were classified in nature, they said.

The development comes after a 34-year-old vegetable supplier at the Pokhran Army base camp was held for allegedly getting sensitive documents from an Army man for money and providing them to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

The vegetable supplier, Habeeb Khan, was picked up on Tuesday by the Delhi Police from Pokhran in Rajasthan, officials had said on Wednesday.

The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch received information that some sensitive documents related to defence establishment were being sent to the neighbouring country through spy network.

“We got input about the involvement of one Habibur Rehman. Our team then conducted a raid and arrested him from Pokhran after due verification. Some secret documents were recovered from his possession and a case was registered against him under the Official Secrets Act,” Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Praveer Ranjan said at a press conference.

During the course of investigation, it was found that Army man Paramjit was the link man in the crime.

He was earlier posted at Pokhran where he came in contact with Rehman who asked him to share the secret documents, the officer said.

Paramjit is currently posted as a clerk at Agra Cantt, police said.

According to police, Rehman’s relatives are based in Pakistan’s Sindh and he had been to that country and met some people there involved in the spy racket.

Rehman was asked to share the documents with them and the money for doing the job was sent through hawala network, police said, adding that further investigation is underway in the matter.

“Both Rehman and Paramjit have been found involved in the illegal act. The Army headquarters have also confirmed that the documents shared by the duo were classified in nature,” a police officer said.

Multiple bank accounts used in the crime have been found, he said, adding the matter is being thoroughly investigated.

  • Delhi police detains five farmers for protesting, raising slogans near Parliament

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Five farmers who were protesting and raising slogans near Parliament on July 1, 2021, were detained and taken to Parliament Street Police Station, said Delhi police.

They were released after questioning, police further said.

Farmers have been protesting at the different borders of the national capital since November 26 against the three newly enacted farm laws – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

Earlier on the completion of seven months of the ongoing protest, farmers on June 26 took out another ‘tractor rally’ and submitted a memorandum to Governors in all states.

Farmers camping at Delhi’s Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders observed the day as “Save Agriculture, Save Democracy Day” to mark the completion of seven months of their agitation.

  • Republic Day violence: Delhi Police secures custody of protester, to probe source of funding

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has remanded a 26-year-old protester to 5-day police custody for interrogation in connection with his alleged involvement in the Red Fort violence and vandalism case during the farmers’ protest rally on the Republic Day this year.

Accused Boota Singh, who allegedly played an active role in the farmers’ agitation, was arrested from Punjab’s Tarn Taran region on Wednesday.

He had a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head and was absconding for over five months.

Delhi Police told Metropolitan Magistrate Shivli Talwar that the accused will be taken to Tarn Taran, about 500 km from Delhi, for investigation during the remand period.

The police said it will also ascertain the source of funding of the alleged conspiracy, money flow to his bank accounts, probe social media accounts, recover mobile, and seize clothes he was wearing at the time of the incident.

Besides, it said it will confront him with video clips and CCTV footage in order to identify co-accused who accompanied him from Singhu Border to the Red Fort to create mayhem and ransack the monument.

“Considering the ground and fact that accused has to be taken to Tarn Taran for the purpose of investigation, accused be remanded to PC for five days,” the judge said in an order passed on June 30.

Investigating officer Inspector Pankaj Arora apprised the court that Singh was part of the riotous mob which “attacked the police personnel, ransacked, sabotaged, and robbed the government and public property and also the Red Fort.

” He stated that in one of the videos, the accused was seen with co-accused — Gurjot Singh and Gurjant Singh in which the duo was giving interview to the media after they hoisted Nishan Sahib at the Flag Guard area.

“During further investigation, it has also come on record that he, along with his other associate, was in touch with co-accused Iqbal Singh who is stated to be one of the main conspirators and instigators,” Inspector Arora submitted.

Advocates Jasdeep S Dhillon and Gurumukh Singh, representing the accused, said that their client is being falsely implicated in the case and that there are no specific allegations against him.

It was further submitted that the mere presence of Singh in the interview given to a media channel by co-accused persons “does not reflect his complicity in the offence”.

On January 26, protesting farmers had clashed with police during the tractor rally against three farm laws and stormed into the Red Fort, hoisting religious flags on its domes and injuring scores of policemen.

An FIR was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, Epidemic Act, and Disaster Management Act.

Actor-activist Deep Sidhu is accused of being the key conspirator of the violence and is currently out on bail.

The court had recently taken cognizance of the charge sheet in the case and summoned all the accused on July 12.

  • SC rejects police plea against HC order for testimony’s copy to Delhi CM, others in CS assault case

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Thursday dismissed the police plea against the Delhi High Court order asking it to supply the copy of statement of a witness to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and 11 other MLAs in a case related to alleged assault of the then chief secretary Anshu Prakash in 2018.

A bench headed by Justice D Y Chyandrachud rejected Delhi Police’s plea, saying that as per the basic principle of natural justice, there must be a “robust common sense” that the accused must have the copy of the statement of the witnesses.

The criminal case relates to alleged assault on Prakash during a meeting at Kejriwal’s official residence on February 19, 2018.

Kejriwal, Sisodia and nine other AAP MLAs were granted bail in October 2018 .

The other two MLAs, Amanatullah Khan and Prakash Jarwal, were granted bail earlier by the high court.

The alleged assault had triggered a bitter tussle between the Delhi government and its bureaucrats.

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Farmer leaders on Saturday virtually spoke to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal after they claimed they weren’t allowed to meet him and submitted to his representative a memorandum addressed to the president demanding repeal of the three farm laws.

Farmers had given a call for a protest march from Civil Lines metro station to the Raj Bhawan, a senior police officer said, adding that the Delhi Police tightened security across borders of the national capital in view of the anticipated march.

The SKM alleged in a statement that protestors were not allowed to meet the LG, and were picked up and taken to the Wazirabad Police Training Centre.

Later on, a brief virtual meeting was arranged with the LG and the memorandum was handed over to his representative, it said.

“The memorandum included our demands for withdrawal of the three farms laws and demand for a new law to ensure guarantee for MSP,” BKU media incharge Dharmendra Malik said.

Earlier hundreds of farmers from interiors of Uttar Pradesh reached Ghazipur to mark the completion of seven months of the protest.

Many of them came on tractors.

“Adequate police deployment was made at the site in view of the increased gathering of protestors,” a police official said.

A protestor from Moradabad and affiliated to the BKU, said he has been associated with the movement for seven months and intended to continue the stir till the farmers demands were not met.

“Tikait saahab has told us that we have to keep making efforts especially on the 26th of every month in order for the government to listen to our demands,” he said.

Earlier in the day, reports about the arrest of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait were circulating on social media.

The Delhi Police clarified that the reports were fake and said action would be taken against those spreading such news.

“Fake news! News related to arrest of Rakesh Tikait is incorrect. Pl stay away from such fake news/tweets. Action will be taken for spreading such false news/tweets,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) tweeted.

BKU media in-charge Malik also said that Tikait had not been arrested.

“Tikait was not arrested by the police. He’s still at the Ghazipur protest site where demonstration is underway against the farm laws. There is no conflict situation at the protest site,” Malik said.

The Delhi Metro decided to shut down three main stations on the Yellow Line for four hours on Saturday.

It said thousands of farmers across India planned to march in rallies to Raj Bhavans in different states on Saturday.
