  • Twitterati left amused by exchange between Pakistani actor, Delhi Police

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI: The repartee of Delhi Police on Twitter left netizens amused on Tuesday after a Pakistan actor sought to know its online link as she wished to file a complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the micro-blogging site.

“Anyone knows the online link of Delhi Police? I have to file a complaint against the Indian PM & Indian Intelligence Agency RAW who are spreading chaos and terrorism in my country Pakistan. If the Indian courts are free (as they claim), then I am sure the Indian Supreme Court will provide me justice,” Pakistani actor Sehar Shinwari, who is also a self-proclaimed social activist from Karachi, wrote on the social media platform.

Her tweet might not have attracted much attention, but the response posted by the Delhi Police set the platform abuzz. Without missing a beat, the Delhi Police’s social media team swung into action and delivered a witty response that left everyone in stitches.

“We are afraid we still do not have jurisdiction in Pakistan. But would like to know how come you are tweeting when the internet has been shut down in your country!” its official handle posted.

Sehar, caught off guard by the response, found herself in a predicament and the butt of humour online. Amidst the humour that resonated across the online community, Sehar’s tweet became an instant sensation.

Memes and jokes flooded social media, with users gleefully shared the Delhi Police’s response, relishing in the hilarity of the situation.

A day later, Sehar took to Twitter again, now seeking the intervention of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the matter!

“I thought Delhi Police was a legal institution that works to implement the Samvidhan (Constitution) of India. I made a complain against one of their citizens (Narendra Modi) for commiting crimes inside other country. however, their response proved they are just “Trolls” of BJP whose job is to shut all voices who speak against injustice. Now I demand justice from @IntlCrimCourt,” she wrote.

The Pakistani actor’s tweet came after violence broke out in many cities of the neighbouring country following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan for alleged corruption. The cricketer-turned-politician was taken into custody by the paramilitary Rangers on Tuesday in a graft case.

On March 24, the ongoing protests entered 29th day. The NREGA workers from different states have been reportedly protesting in Delhi against mandatory online attendance and Aadhaar-based payment.

A senior police officer said the university had approached the police over apprehensions that peace and tranquillity could be disturbed. He said the students and activists were later removed from the spot.

An activist associated with NREGA Sangarah Morcha said several students were picked up during the peaceful gathering.

“Many Delhi University (DU) students as well as an American student were detained and taken to the Maurice Nagar Cyber cell station for simply holding a discussion on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), 2005 and the right to work. Several other activists were also detained when they went to the police station to support those who were detained,” Raj Shekhar said.

Taking to Twitter, the NREGA Sangarsh Morcha shared a series of tweets about the incident. In the video, police personnel were seen gathered around the students who were assembled to conduct the meeting.

Few moments later, they were removed from the spot and many were taken in police vans.

“The Delhi police is silencing the right of peaceful protestors to hold public discussions on issues crucial for the poor of the nation. Let us resist this and protest harder,” the group tweeted.

Reacting to the incident, a senior police officer said no FIR has been registered in this regard.

“When activists and students were trying to assemble, they were removed from the spot. Eleven people who had gathered were peacefully removed. Among these 11 people, two were women,” he said.

“No FIR has been registered in the matter,” he added.

  • Scribe Zubair denies Delhi Police disclosure theories attributed to him

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Alt News Founder Mohammed Zubair through an affidavit told Delhi High Court that the theories attributed to him by Delhi Police are false and baseless.

Zubair, who is being probed for posting an alleged objectionable tweet against a Hindu deity in 2018, claimed that the Delhi police has attributed ‘false and concocted theories’ to him in the name of ‘disclosure statements’, which is a ‘subversion of the rule of law’ and made a ‘mockery of due process’, and the search and seizure from his residence were carried out with malafide reasons.

Following a status report filed by the Delhi Police on the investigation in the case, he claimed that he has not made any disclosure statement to the agency in relation to the recovery of certain devices and any such disclosure is ‘wholly false, wrong, concocted and inadmissible in law’.

Delhi Police, in its status report filed in September, had told the court that during Zubair’s police custody remand, one laptop, two invoices and a hard disk were recovered from his Bengaluru residence based on a disclosure statement that was admissible under the Indian Evidence Act and has to be looked upon at the time of trial.

The status report was filed in response to a plea by Zubair against his arrest and search and seizure exercise in the case.

“It is alleged that Mohd. Zubair disclosed that the laptop and mobile phone used by him for posting the above content is at his residence’. (It) is categorically and completely denied as wrong, false and concocted. It is asserted that I did not make any such disclosure as the tweet in question dates back to 2018 and I clearly and specifically told the police/investigating officer that I no longer have the mobile phone device which I had been using in 2018, at my residence, as the same was lost,” Zubair said in his affidavit in reply to the status report.

“The statement attributed to me as a disclosure is manifestly wrong, false and concocted, to fabricate a non-existent ground to unlawfully raid my residence and seize my laptop and hard disk, which I use for my journalistic fact-checking work. The said search and seizure from my residence was thus carried out with malafide reasons extraneous to the need for investigation,” he stated.

“A series of false and concocted theories have been attributed to me as disclosures, and the same are denied and rejected as false, wrong, concocted and baseless, and I state that I did not make any such disclosure during the course of the investigation,” he said.

Zubair stated in the reply that he was a fact checker who posted content on social media to debunk misinformation and fake news and his work was not limited to any particular kind of posts.

“I categorically and specifically deny that in order to gain popularity I post content that triggers religious sentiments. I am a fact checker and I post content on social media debunking fake news, misinformation and disinformation of all kinds, and my work is not limited to any particular kind of posts, nor do I post content for popularity or any other material gain,” he asserted.

Zubair, represented by lawyers Vrinda Grover and Soutik Banerjee, submitted that the admissibility of the recoveries during the police investigation remains under contest as they are wholly illegal and all investigative steps premised on the purported disclosures, including the search and seizure, are inadmissible.

“The actions of the investigating officer in creating false and concocted disclosure statements to sustain the investigation are a subversion of the rule of law and make a mockery of due process. That the purported have been prepared while I was in police custody without my knowledge, and I have only learnt about the same from the status report dated 14.09.2022 filed by the Respondent in the captioned proceedings,” the reply said.

Zubair had moved the high court earlier this year against the legality and propriety of a trial court’s June 28 order granting his custody to police for four days in the case.

As an interim relief, he prayed that till the petition is decided by the high court, the police shall not venture into Zubair’s laptop as the tweet was made through a mobile phone and not the computer.

On July 1, the high court issued notice on Zubair’s petition and granted time to the investigating agency to file its response to the plea.

Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through one of his tweets and was subsequently granted bail by the trial court.

Earlier in June, a case was registered against Zubair under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, language, etc.) and 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Police had said the case was registered on the complaint of a Twitter user who accused him of hurting religious sentiments.

Police, while seeking an extension of Zubair’s custody by five days, had alleged before the trial court that the accused was following a trend where he used religious tweets in an effort to get famous and that there was a deliberate effort to create social disharmony and hurt religious feelings.

The investigating agency also said the accused joined the probe but did not cooperate and various materials from his phone were deleted.

  • Ex-cop’s son bludegeoned to death with bricks over row on parking at Ghaziabad roadside eatery

    By PTI

GHAZIABAD: A 35-year-old man was battered to death with bricks by a group of unidentified assailants following an altercation over car parking near a roadside eatery here, police said on Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Varun, son of a retired assistant sub-inspector of the Delhi Police and resident of Jawli village in the Teela Mor area.

The place where the incident occurred is hardly 2 km from Delhi border.

According to police, the incident took place on Tuesday night when Varun, along with his two friends, had gone to the eatery for dinner and parked his car near another vehicle, the door of which could not open due to it.

This led to an altercation, after which Varun was allegedly beaten up brutally with bricks by the assailants.

Severely injured, Varun was rushed to GTB Hospital in Delhi for treatment where he died, ASP (Second) Gyanendra Singh said.

Five teams of police have been formed to nab the killers, Singh said.

An FIR has been lodged against unknown assailants under relevant sections of IPC, including section 302 (murder), at Teela Mor police station on a complaint of victim’s father Kanwar Pal.

A video of the incident also went viral.

In the video, the victim was seen lying on the road in a numb condition and the attackers hitting him with a brick.

Later, Ghaziabad SSP Muniraj G visited the spot.

He said that action will be initiated against such eateries which serve food to the people who park their cars along the road and then start drinking in their vehicles.

The deceased’s father in his complaint said that Varun had gone to drop his wife Anjali at Mohan Nagar bus stand around 4.45 pm on Tuesday.

Later, Varun, along with his two friends — Deepak and Sanjay — went to the dhaba (roadside eatery) for dinner, Pal said.

The father said around 9.15 pm on Tuesday, Varun’s nephew Anirudh received a call from Deepak who hails from the same village that Varun has received severe injuries and his car has been damaged by some unknown persons who brutally beat him.

Getting the information, Pal’s younger son, along with a neighbour, reached the dhaba where they found Varun lying in a pool of blood.

They immediately rushed him to GTB hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead, police said.

Pal also alleged that when the scuffle took place his son’s two friends were with him and they too had dinner.

Instead of taking Varun to the hospital or informing the police, the two fled away from there, the father said in the complaint.

Police have also added the names of victim’s friends to the FIR.

Cause of death would be ascertained after the autopsy of the body, the ASP said.

Police have obtained CCTV footage and the culprits would be nabbed soon, he added.

  • Delhi: Asst professor booked for recommending sister’s name as teacher by posing as LG

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has booked an assistant professor of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University here for allegedly recommending his sister’s name for a teacher by posing as Lt Governor VK Saxena, the LG secretariat said on Friday.

A call recommending appointment of a particular candidate in the university’s English department was made to GGSIU vice chancellor Mahesh Verma on September 30 by an unidentified person impersonating the LG, it said in a statement.

The VC contacted the LG secretariat to ascertain the veracity of the call. He found that no such call was made following which the matter was reported to the police.

An FIR was registered for impersonation at the Dwarka police station on October 2, it said.

The recruitment exercise was later cancelled.

“During investigation, the accused was identified as an assistant professor in the Economics department who had made the call, posing as the LG, for appointment of his sister in the English department of the university,” the statement said.

From the call detail record (CDR) of the vice chancellor’s landline number, it was revealed that the call was made from a United Kingdom-based number, it said.

Upon investigation, it was further established that the UK number was also used to call mobile numbers of the assistant professor’s sister and father, it said.

The duo gave up the name of the accused during questioning. The accused had gone to the UK on September 27.

A look out circular (LOC) has been initiated against him and a probe is on, it said.

In its initial enquiry, the university also found the involvement of some other officials in the case and suitable action against them has been initiated, the statement said.

It has also been found that the accused is in UK without the mandatory prior permission of the competent authority and a show cause notice has also been issued to him by the university, it said.

The LG has taken an extremely serious view of the matter and emphasized that it has never been his style of functioning to make calls or entertain any request whatsoever that involved out-of-turn favours, benefits or unethical practices, said the statement.

He also cautioned all concerned to strictly check with his secretariat in case of any such calls or messages received by them, it added.

  • Religious conversion event: Delhi Police to question ex-minister Gautam on Tuesday

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police will question former minister Rajendra Pal Gautam on Tuesday over his presence at a religious conversion event where Hindu deities were allegedly denounced, senior officials said.

He has been issued a notice to appear for questioning along with some others, a senior police official said.

The former minister will be questioned about his presence in the event and details will be sought from him regarding what actually happened there, he said.

Gautam resigned from his post on Sunday amid a controversy over his presence at the religious conversion event.

The BJP had used the issue to attack AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal during the election campaigning in Gujarat and accused him of being “anti-Hindu”.

In a letter shared on Twitter, Gautam said he attended the event in his personal capacity and it had nothing to do with his party or the ministry.

He lashed out at the BJP for targeting Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alleging the saffron party was doing “dirty politics” on the issue.

Gautam, who was the Minister for Social Welfare, SC and ST, Registrar of Co-operative Societies and Gurudwara Elections, said he is resigning as minister as he does not want his leader or AAP to be in trouble because of him.

  • South Delhi club brawl: Woman alleges bouncers thrashed her, ‘tore off’ her clothes

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The bouncers of a club in south Delhi allegedly thrashed a woman and tore off her clothes, the police said on Sunday. The woman’s friends were also beaten up in the brawl.

However, the club owner denied all charges, accusing Delhi Police personnel of mental and physical harassment apart from being falsely implicated in the case for not paying ‘extortion’ money.

According to the police, the incident took place on the intervening night of September 17-18. “A PCR call was received at KM Pur police station regarding an incident of misbehaviour and tearing off the clothes of a woman at ‘Da Code’ club in South Extension after which the police reached the spot and met the caller,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Chandan Chowdhary said.

According to the DCP, when the police reached the spot, they found that the woman caller’s clothes were messed up and disordered, and on inquiry, she told that her clothes were torn by two bouncers and their manager of the club. “She further informed that she was misbehaved and hit by them, and they had also touched her inappropriately,” the DCP said.

After taking the victim woman to AIIMS Trauma Centre, the police, accordingly, registered an FIR under sections 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 354 A (Sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment), 354 B (Assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and began probing the incident.

The senior official said the complainant was examined in the case, who had informed that she had come to the club along with her friends to party, but they had an argument over entry into the club and were subsequently thrashed by the bouncers.

The officer informed that they are investigating the incident and CCTV cameras of the club and other neighbouring showrooms are being analysed. “The details of the bouncers have been taken from the club and efforts are being made to arrest the real culprits,” the DCP said.

Chowdhary further informed that the complainant’s statement was also recorded before the Concerned Magistrate at Saket Court Complex. Seven days later on September 24, the club, yet again, found itself in controversy as seven of its people were detained after they allegedly tried to stop Delhi Police personnel who went there after a complaint of quarrel and loud music.

“A PCR call was received at KM Pur police station on 12.02 a.m. on September 24 stating that some quarrel has taken place with bouncers of the club and DJ is being played,” DCP Chowdhary said.

The senior officer said when the police reached the spot and tried to enter the ‘Da Code’ club, the bouncers tried to stop them. “Hence, seven persons were detained and action against them was taken under sections 107 and 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure,” the DCP said.

The police also seized an amplifier that was being used to play the music at the bar. Notably, the DCP of the south district also shared a three-year-old old case of the club in which an FIR was registered against five people, including the bar owner and his son, on the complaint of an Excise Department Inspector. Sharing details of that case, the DCP said three years ago in 2019 when the Excise Staff came to conduct a raid in the club, they were assaulted and confined in the bar for several hours by the owner and his staff.

“The Excise Staff was released from the club when the local police reached there and intervened in the matter. Hence, the club owner, his son and staff were also charge-sheeted in the case,” the DCP added. On the other hand, the owner of the club, Surendra Singh Chowdhary, had a completely different story to tell.

In a letter to the Special Commissioner of Police (Law and order), he accused the local police personnel of demanding Rs 5 lakh extortion money every month and when he refused to pay that, he was subsequently threatened by them. On the September 18 incident, the club owner said that at around 1 a.m. in the night, four boys and three girls, who were all drunk, misbehaved with the club’s staff and when they were told to behave, the girls threatened to implicate us on false charges.

“They forcibly took Rs 1.5 lakh from the podium and then made a call to the police. When the police came, it was the same cop who had been threatening us with extortion and then he yet again threatened us of severe consequences,” the club owner wrote in his letter to the Special CP. The owner claimed that the police personnel came the next day on September 18 as well and detained two of their staff members who were explaining to them the previous night’s incident.

“We kept requesting the police personnel to investigate with the help of CCTV cameras as our club is completely covered with it and the whole incident has been recorded on it,” the club owner said. He said that the police kept his staff members in custody for over 22 hours and thrashed them with belts, sticks and shoes at regular intervals.

The owner claimed that on September 23-24 intervening night, the police, yet again, reached their bar and seized Rs 2,53,000 worth of instruments as he refused to pay the extortion money. Responding to the allegations of the club owner, DCP (south), Chowdhary said that further enquiry into the allegations made by the club owner is also being done.
