  • For the first time ever, no CSK batter crosses the 400-run mark in a season

    By ANI

MUMBAI: For the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), none of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batters could register 400 runs or more during a single season.

The side got this unwanted record attached to its name after their final IPL 2022 game against Rajasthan Royals at Brabourne Stadium on Friday. With a five-wicket loss, CSK’s season ended on a disappointing note as they failed to qualify for playoffs, with only four wins in their 14 games.

In 14 games, he has scored 368 runs at an average of 26.29. Three fifties have come out of his willow, with the best individual score of 99.

He is followed by Shivam Dube (289), Ambati Rayadu (274), Devon Conway (252) and Moeen Ali (244).

Chennai Super Kings ended their current season with a disappointing five-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals. They end their season at the ninth position on the points table with six points.

  • CSK coach Stephen Fleming predicts a bright future for Pathirana after fruitful debut vs Gujarat Titans

    By IANS

MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has predicted a bright future for young Sri Lankan pace bowler Matheesha Pathirana for the franchise in the coming years, after the 19-year-old grabbed two wickets in a losing cause for the four-time champions against Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Pathirana bowled an economical spell while also taking the wickets of GT opener Shubman Gill and skipper Hardik Pandya to rattle them in the chase in his debut match for CSK. However, Wriddhiman Saha’s unbeaten half-century helped the IPL newcomers to a seven-wicket victory with five balls to spre.

“Yeah, great. We were really looking forward to him playing and he has had success straightaway. He is very young, we know who the similarities he has with which are big shoes to fill. He had a great debut, and we are really pleased for him. It is a unique skill, and learning to coach how to use that is one of the challenges. It was great for him to get a game with us,” Fleming said.

The head coach also added that the Super Kings know where they want to improve going into next year, and they will leave “no stone unturned” for IPL 2023.

“We have got some jigsaw puzzles and we are just trying to fit them all together. It is not just about how a player will perform one day, it is the role that he does. We have got a view to where we want to get to, and where we need to improve for next year. We went through this two years ago, and we got it right. So, we are really working hard on trying to get the jigsaw pieces together.

“There are some places that we probably need to fill as a lot of teams that don’t qualify have that same challenge. What we try and do is see what we have got right now and make sure that we have no stone unturned when we plan for next year,” said Fleming.

Fleming added that the expansion of the IPL had provided more opportunities to youngsters to showcase their talent.

“It has been good. The two new teams have allowed more youngsters to get more prominent roles, which I think is another great opportunity for Indian cricket to develop more talent. We have got a few, we have seen a few on show and we have introduced a few today. Our preference has been for more experience, but by no means do we not look for young players and young talent.

“And, we are very happy with the guys that have played today and certainly happy with the guys we have in our squad.

“The start of the three-year cycle is the time that you bring the young players in and then you make something out of them during those three years,” added Fleming.

  • CSK star Ambati Rayudu announces retirement from IPL, deletes tweet later

    By ANI

NEW DELHI: Chennai Super Kings cricketer Ambati Rayudu surprised everyone on Saturday by tweeting that the Indian Premier League 2022 would be his last season.

An hour later the veteran Indian cricketer deleted the tweet. This retraction by the CSK batter created a lot of confusion among the fans.

“I am happy to announce that this will be my last IPL. I have had a wonderful time playing it and being a part of 2 great teams for 13 years. Would love to sincerely thank Mumbai Indians and CSK for the wonderful journey, ” tweeted Rayudu.

After this, a CSK official spoke to ANI and denied the news of Rayudu’s retirement.

This is not the first time Rayudu has announced his retirement. When he was not picked for the 2019 ODI world cup, he had announced his retirement but reversed the decision and came back to play in the IPL.

His tweet on Saturday confused everyone and led to speculation whether the ongoing edition was truly the “last IPL” for Rayudu. In 12 matches in the season so far Rayudu has not been in the best of form scoring 271 runs at an average of 27.10.

Responding to Rayudu’s tweet former India pacer Irfan Pathan tweeted: “Played cricket with you since our u-19 days. Always admire your batting and the energy you give on the field. Wish you well for your journey ahead brother. You have done very well and should be proud of your achievement @RayuduAmbati.”

In 55 ODIs Rayudu has scored 1694 runs including three centuries at an average of 47.05 and he has scored 42 runs in six T20 Internationals.

  • CSK’s decision to send Shivam Dube higher in order for batting is working well for him: Sunil Gavaskar

    By IANS

MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings’ young India all-rounder Shivam Dube has been garnering a lot of praise for hitting big sixes whenever he has sent in to bat higher in the batting order in the IPL 2022.

In the 9 games he has played, the talented left-handed batter from Mumbai has scored 279 runs at a strike rate of 160.34.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Dube for his hitting those big sixes and claimed the team management’s decision to send him higher in the batting order is helping the southpaw play long and impactful knocks.

‘His strength is his balance. He stands tall and hits the ball straight. He’s a better striker of the ball and a more consistent striker of the ball (this season). That’s the secret of him picking up the balance. The moment you try and move your foot a little too far across, you’ll lose your balance and shape. And most importantly, he’s getting the responsibility of batting higher up the order which means he’s getting more overs to bat. Earlier, he used to bat down the order for his previous franchises, he could only play five-six overs, you can’t score too many runs when you get to play only five-six overs,’ Gavaskar said on Cricket Live on Star Sports.

Former England cricketer Graeme Swann while referring to Dube’s unbeaten 95 off 46 balls against RCB, said the left-handed India batter took the responsibility of a senior player and scored heavily.

‘Despite being a junior player, Shivam Dube took up the senior’s role and batted responsibly. One of the straight sixes he hit in the game against RCB (where he smashed 95*), that was one of the easiest sixes I have seen in cricket. 102 meters over the sightscreens, it was ridiculous,’ Swann said.

  • CSK batter Devon Conway reveals his emotional struggles following a freak injury during 2021 T20 World Cup

    By IANS

MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings’ charismatic batter Devon Conway has revealed the trauma of missing the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 final in the UAE because of a freak injury in the semifinal against England.

The 30-year-old New Zealand cricketer was dismissed by England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler in the successful run chase in the semifinal, and a frustrated Conway smashed his bat to the ground, breaking the fifth metacarpal in his right hand.

“I think it took a while for me to get over that. I remember when I got the X-rays back, the surgeon said to me you have got a fracture in your hand. It was immediate devastation. Right, this is the end. I am not playing the final. I am not going to India straight after the World Cup (for the Test and limited-overs series). All the opportunities that were presenting themselves, I was close to the door and I think the worst thing was to go back to the hotel and tell the boys that I have done this and jeopardised my opportunity to play and help the guys to try and win the final,” Conway said on chennaisuperkings.com.

“That was the toughest thing. I was fortunate enough to get the support from every single player in the group. They knew that it was a freak accident, I never for one second thought that punching my bat with my glove on I would potentially break my hand and be out of the World Cup final. So it was an immediate regret.”

Conway, who is averaging a massive 77 in IPL 2022 after scoring three half-centuries (231 runs) in the four games he has played for CSK this season, added that he had no option but to come to terms with what he had done and try to control his emotions.

“For me to overcome that I had to come to peace with that it was a mistake and the learnings that came from it all was just to make sure that you control your emotions in the heat of battle. Whether it is through your actions or it is through what you say you have to remain calm. No matter how intense that moment becomes, instead of me dwelling on that for years.

“Unfortunately, that will live with me forever. I might never get an opportunity to play in an ICC World Cup final again, but I cannot let that hold me back. I have got to try and take the learnings from it and just remember that I don’t want to go through that experience again. So, it was a bad situation but I can take the learnings from it and move on,” he added.
