    Riding high on Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh’s valiant effort, cricketing upstarts US pulled off a major upset, defeating Bangladesh by 5 wickets in the first T20I of the three-match series here at the Prairie View Cricket Complex. At a time the giants and recognised cricketing nations are gearing up for the highly-anticipated T20 World Cup, which is less than ten days away, the co-hosts of the marquee event pulled off an unprecedented victory over a decidedly stronger and much-fancied Bangladesh side.

    After managing to keep Bangladesh to 153/6 in the first innings, the USA gave themselves a platform to bolster their chances of pulling off an upset. The opening pair of Steven Taylor and captain Monank Patel raced to 27 runs in the first three overs.

    But Monank (12) got run out at the non-striker’s end. Andries Gous (23) arrived at the crease and scored runs at a brisk pace before losing his wicket to Rishad Hossain. Taylor (28) looked well set for an extended stay on the crease but Mustafizur Rahman got better of the batter.

    As the promising-looking chase started to go astray in the middle overs, Anderson and Harmeet raised hopes of a win. Harmeet changed the complexion of the game with back-to-back sixes off Mustafizur in the 17th over.

    In the 18th over, Shoriful Islam fell at the receiving end as Harmeet put on a boundary fest. A towering six on the second ball was followed by a boundary on the final delivery. With 14 runs in the over, the equation came down to 24 runs in the final two. Anderson took the mantle of finishing off the game with two sixes and a boundary in the next nine balls. His finishing touches sealed a 5-wicket win for the USA over Bangladesh.

    Earlier in the innings, after winning the toss and putting Bangladesh to bat, it was a moderate performance from the visitors. A conservative approach in the powerplay, saw Bangladesh put 37/2 on board. Shakib Al Hasan struggled before getting run out.

    Towhid Hridoy (58) starred with the bat on the back of his performance in the recently concluded Zimbabwe series. Mahmudullah led the attack in the death overs. But USA bowlers kept their line and length tight to restrict Bangladesh to 153/6.

    It was an initiative of the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation, a release from the event organisers informed.

    Before entering the playing field at Holkar Stadium, Tendulkar spoke to the children, who were seeing a game live for the first time, and told them real winners are those who find solutions to the challenges of life, it added.

    The release said Tendulkar is working closely with Vinayak Lohani’s Parivar Foundation for the betterment of tribal children in remote areas of Madhya Pradesh through STF.

    NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday hailed the Indian women’s cricket team for fighting till the end after it suffered a heart-breaking defeat against South Africa to crash out of the Women’s World Cup.

    “I applaud #TeamIndia led by @M_Raj03 (Mithali Raj) for fighting till the end. Their #CWC22 journey embodied the team’s never say die spirit. Wishing you all the best for your future battles,” Gandhi tweeted.

    India crashed out of the Women’s World Cup after suffering a three-wicket defeat against South Africa in a must-win league-stage game that went down to the wire in New Zealand’s Christchurch on Sunday.

    Smriti Mandhana (71), Shafali Verma (53) and skipper Mithali Raj (68) struck half-centuries, setting the platform for India to reach a competitive 274 for seven at the Hagley Oval.

    Despite India’s average bowling and fielding, the match went the full distance with off-spinner Deepti Sharma needing to defend seven runs in the final over, but South Africa won on the last ball.

  • Gwalior: Out at 49, batsman critically injures fielder who took catch

    GWALIOR: A 23-year-old batsman who was approaching 50 runs in a cricket match in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh hit a fielder with his bat after the latter took a catch and got him out, police said on Sunday.

    The fielder, identified as Sachin Parashar (23), had to be rushed to a government hospital in a critical condition and the batsman, Sanjay Paliya, was charged with attempt to murder, City Superintendent of Police Ramnaresh Pachouri said.

    The incident took place on Saturday during a game being played on Mela Ground under Gola Ka Mandir police station limits, the CSP added.

    “Paliya got angry after Parashar took his catch and got him out on 49, just one run short of a half century. Paliya rushed towards Parashar and started hitting him on the head with his bat. Other players tried to stop Paliya. Parashar continues to be unconscious in hospital,” Pachouri said.

    Paliya absconded from the place and efforts were on to nab him, the CSP said.

    India skipper Virat Kohli broke yet another batting record in the first match of New Year as he became the fastest to reach 1000 runs in T20I cricket as captain and only the sixth overall to achieve the feat.

    Kohli needed 25 runs to reach the milestone before the start of the three-match series against Sri Lanka. Kohli is only the second Indian after MS Dhoni (1112 runs from 62 games) to achieve this feat. Virat Kohli achieved the feat in 30th innings as a skipper.

    Virat Kohli has also overtaken his teammate Rohit Sharma on the list of most runs scored in T20I cricket. Virat Kohli needed just 1 run to become the batsman with most runs in the T20I format. Notably, Kohli and Rohit Sharma ended 2019 at the joint-top spot as they had amassed 2633 runs each.

    Earlier, an all-round India ticked all the boxes on Jasprit Bumrah and Shikhar Dhawan’s return to international cricket and outplayed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second T20 International on Tuesday.

    The convincing win gave the hosts an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

    After Virat Kohli won the toss to field first, the bowlers restricted the visitors to a below-par total of 142 at a venue that was supposed to witness a run-fest on Tuesday evening. KL Rahul (45 off 32) provided a perfect start, taking India to 54 for no loss in six overs.
