  • Won’t tie-up with Samajwadi Party even for 100 seats now: Chandrashekhar Azad

    By PTI

NOIDA: The Aazad Samaj Party on Tuesday said it will no longer approach the SP for a tie-up for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections even if Akhilesh Yadav offers it 100 seats.

Aazad Samaj Party (ASP) chief Chandrashekhar Azad said his party is open to stitching an alliance with others and maintained that his fight has always been with the RSS and the BJP.

The party had said last week that efforts were being made to form a third front of several opposition parties, apparently after disagreement over seat sharing with Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP).

“I have made it clear. The time was till today (Tuesday) for the leader whom I had approached for an alliance to stop the BJP. I announce this today that we are not going with them (SP). Now, even if they offer us 100 seats we will not tie-up with them because it’s a matter of self-respect,” Azad told reporters.

On Yadav saying he would extend support to the ASP, the flamboyant Dalit leader said he is a lawyer by education and understands well the difference in the language of support and taunt, in a veiled attack on the SP president who had offered two seats to the ASP recently.

He said workers and activists of the Bhim Army, a Dalit outfit he founded, and the ASP are strong enough to compete in the polls and have a reach at village level.

“It is true that we are open to forming tie-ups with other parties. Around 50 small outfits are sitting at our office now as we speak but we have come for the press conference here since it was pre-scheduled,” Azad claimed.

He added that ASP will not field candidates against the RLD, which has a tie-up with the SP for the UP polls because of respect for the Jayant Chaudhary-led party, which had offered the ASP the two seats that Yadav was talking about.

Elections to the 403 seats of the UP Assembly will take place in seven phases, beginning February 10.

The results will be announced on March 10.

  • Chandrashekhar Azad calls for gheraoing PM’s residence if Lakhimpur culprits not arrested in seven days

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Azad Samaj Party chief and Dalit leader Chandrashekhar Azad on Friday said he and his supporters will gherao the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi here if the culprits of the Lakhimpur Kheri incident are not arrested within seven days.

The prime minister should talk to farmers, go to Lakhimpur Kheri and meet family members of slain farmers, he demanded.

“The prime minister tweets on every issue but he is yet to react on the killing of the farmers. The culprits are roaming free. We will gherao the PM’s residence if the culprits are not arrested within seven days,” Azad said at a press conference here.

The Dalit leader compared the Lakhimpur Kheri incident to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, and asserted it will have huge repercussions in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections next year.

Azad alleged there is no law and order in Uttar Pradesh and demanded that the CM tender his resignation.

He also supported the demand for a caste census, saying it will help ascertain the percentage of neglected sections of society.

Eight people were killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence on Sunday.

Of the eight, four were farmers, who were allegedly knocked down by vehicles driven by BJP workers travelling to welcome Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya to an event in the area.

The other four were two BJP workers, a driver of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra and Raman Kashyap, a journalist working for a private television channel.

An FIR under section 302 of IPC (murder) has been registered against the Union minister’s son, Ashish Mishra, and others in connection with the incident at the Tikonia police station but no arrest has been made so far.

  • Fulfill promises made to Hathras rape victim’s family or will go on dharna: Chandrashekhar Azad to UP govt

    By PTI

ALIGARH: Azad Samaj Party national president Chandrashekhar Azad has threatened to begin an indefinite protest if the Uttar Pradesh government fails to fulfil its promises to the family of a 19-year-old woman from Hathras who was gang-raped and assaulted last year leading to her death.

Azad, who had visited the family of the woman in Hathras earlier this week, said, “Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s promises made a year back of providing financial support to the family, including job and housing, have become a cruel joke for the family.”

Azad met Aligarh Divisional Commissioner Gaurav Dayal who, he said, “assured that the promised assistance to the family would be given within one week.”

“We will begin an indefinite dharna at the Aligarh divisional commissioner’s office after 10 days if these assurances are not fulfilled and justice is not given to the family,” he told reporters here on Friday.

The woman died at a hospital in Delhi in September last year, days after being assaulted and raped by four men.

Azad claimed that Aligarh “has become such a difficult place for Dalits that they would be forced to migrate from here.”

Asked whether his party will form any alliance for the 2022 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, he said, “So far no decision has been taken, but we will not spare any effort to ensure the defeat of the BJP.”

  • 2022 UP polls: Rajbhar tapping smaller players to expand Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha’s reach

    Express News Service

LUCKNOW: Estranged Yogi government minister and president of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) Om Prakash Rajbhar is making all-out efforts to rope in more partners, smaller though,  to his Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha in order to make it a force to reckon in the 2022 assembly elections in UP.

However, despite having an image of a tough bargainer, Rajbhar has emerged as an ‘untouchable’ among the big political players in UP.

After stitching an alliance with All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, Rajbhar met Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad recently and invited him to join the outfit to expand its reach in the western UP as well.

“The Bhim Army chief has given his consent to join the Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha,” claimed Rajbhar. Azad has formed the Azad Samaj Party in March 2020 to take part in electoral politics.

Initially, Rajbhar tried to stitch alliances with mainstream parties like Samajwadi Party and even the Congress in order to get acknowledged in the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh ahead of assembly polls but his efforts did not bear fruits since he joined hands with Owaisi.

Moreover, parties decided to keep Rajbhar at an arm’s length after his meeting with BJP state chief Swatantra Dev Singh last month.

That meeting annoyed not only AIMIM chief Owaisi, who intends to contest on 100 seats in UP but also shaken the confidence of the likes of the Samajwadi Party. According to a senior Samajwadi Party leader, it was difficult to ascertain which way would Rajbhar go. “There is no guarantee that the SBSP chief will stand with us after winning election in the alliance. In this scenario, going with a person whose loyalty is questionable will not be a wise decision,” he said.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is believed to be completely averse to an alliance with any person who has aligned with AIMIM since he thinks that Owaisi’s party may dent the Muslim vote bank of SP.

OP Rajbhar’s SBSP had contested Assembly polls in alliance with the BJP and had won four seats in the Assembly for the first time in 2017.

However, having failed to get favourable responses from the main parties, the Morcha is trying to gain strength by approaching other players in the field.

AIMIM chief Owaisi is also doing his bit and met Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) president Shivpal Singh Yadav at his Lucknow residence two days back. The political scientist believe that Shivpal Yadav was finding it difficult to join hands with the Bhagidari Morcah or strike an alliance with any other party as he was still waiting for Samajwadi Party to take a call on an alliance with PSPL and that he does not want to jeopardize any possibility.

The highly placed sources in PSPL claimed that Shivpal was being pressured by SP patriarch and brother Mulayam Singh Yadav to bury the hatchet with Akhilesh Yadav and join hands before the 2022 assembly elections.

However, Akhilesh has been non-committal on the formal alliance with PSPL saying that his party would consider leaving a few seats for the winnable PSPL candidates.

  • Chandrashekhar Azad will soon join Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha, claims Om Prakash Rajbhar

    By PTI

BALLIA: Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar on Wednesday claimed that Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad will soon be a part of the Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha and a formal announcement in this regard will be made at a rally on October 27.

The morcha is a front of like-minded political parties led by Rajbhar, a former BJP ally.

“I had a meeting with AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan in Lucknow on Tuesday which was very fruitful.

The Bhim Army chief has given his consent to join the Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha,” Om Prakash Rajbhar told PTI here.

The AIMIM had recently announced that it would contest 100 seats in the state assembly polls next year by tying up with Rajbhar-led SBSP and its Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha.

Rajbhar, who was a cabinet minister in the Yogi Adityanath government, had resigned before the Lok Sabha polls in 2019.

He had later launched the Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha as a political front of smaller parties.

Rajbhar said during the talks with both the leaders, the strategy regarding the upcoming elections in the Uttar Pradesh was discussed and it was decided that the first major rally of the morcha will be held at Haldharpur in Mau district on October 27 on the foundation day of SBSP.

During this rally, the Bhim Army chief will formally make an announcement on joining the morcha, he said, adding that the next rally would be held on November 27 at Sandila in Hardoi district.

More rallies have been planned for Kanpur, Moradabad and Basti later.

Besides Owaisi and Azad, leaders of all the parties in the morcha will address these rallies, he said.

The Uttar Pradesh-based Bhim Army was found in 2014 to fight for Dalit rights.

Azad later formed the Azad Samaj Party in March 2020 to take part in electoral politics and allied with Pappu Yadav-led Jan Adhikar Party in Bihar Assembly elections.

Asked if the Vikassheel Insan Party will also be joining his morcha, Rajbhar said its president and Bihar cabinet minister Mukesh Sahni has informed that he will clarify his stand by October 15.

The SBSP chief said he was hoping that Sahni would attend the October 27 rally.

Asked about an alliance with the Samajwadi Party, Rajbhar said he has not yet met its national president Akhilesh Yadav or talked to any party leader on the issue.

The SBSP had contested the 2017 Assembly polls in alliance with the BJP and won four seats.

The Rajbhars constitute 20 per cent of the Poorvanchal population and are regarded as the second-most politically dominant community after the Yadavs in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

All six accused have been arrested.

  • Chandrashekhar Azad stages dharna after police stop him from meeting Unnao girl who was poisoned

    By PTI
KANPUR: Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad along with his supporters staged a sit-in here after he was prevented by police from meeting the teenage girl who was poisoned in Unnao on Monday, official sources said.

Azad was stopped at Ganga Barrage here while he and his supporters were on their way to Survoday Nagar, Kakadev to meet the teenage girl who was poisoned in Unnao and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Kanpur Range IG, Mohit Agarwal, told PTI over phone that Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar and his supporters were stopped at Ganga Barrage while they were on way to meet the Unnao girl at a private hospital in Kakadev.

“Azad and his supporters were not allowed to meet the girl as it was not appropriate to to make the hospital overcrowded believing that the mass gatherings may lead the spread of infectious diseases and might be a serious threat to the minor girl,” the IG added.

Azad and his supporters had staged a sit-in and they later handed over a memorandum to a magistrate, the IG said adding, they then left the city.

The Bhim Army chief earlier demanded that the girl be shifted to AIIMS in New Delhi and a CBI probe be initiated in the case, said another senior official.
