  • Keep up poll promise, effect cut on rates of petroleum products, OPS tells DMK

    By PTI

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu’s main Opposition AIADMK, a BJP ally, on Sunday welcomed the Centre’s move on slashing excise duty on petrol and diesel and urged the ruling DMK in the state to follow suit and implement its poll promise on reducing prices of the petroleum products to benefit people.

AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam said the Union government reducing excise duty on petrol by a record Rs 8 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 6 will help in cooling down the spiralling inflation and bring under control, the prices of essential commodities and fares of autorickshaws and taxis.

He also lauded the central government for other measures including provision of Rs 200 subsidy to the poor who got cooking gas connection under the Ujjwala scheme, for 12 cylinders in a year.

In a statement, the former CM, also known as OPS, urged the MK Stalin-led DMK government to now implement its promise regarding slashing fuel rates, made ahead of the 2021 Assembly polls and further benefit the citizens.

In fact, prices of some of the vegetables in the state including tomato were above Rs 100 a kilo, he said, adding the DMK was duty-bound to fulfill its poll promises.

“Considering people’s welfare and aimed at controlling prices, inflation and to bring down the losses faced by state-run transport corporations (which operate diesel-run buses) besides implementing the poll promise, the chief minister (Stalin) should reduce the price of petrol (by a further) Rs 2 and Rs 4 for diesel per litre and ensure justice for people,” Panneerselvam urged.

The DMK government had last year effected VAT cut to enable the consumers a Rs 3 per litre cut in the price of petrol.

It had promised to slash the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 4 per litre, if elected to power, ahead of the April 2021 polls which it swept. If the DMK kept its word on slashing rates, the price of petrol and diesel will cost around Rs 99 and Rs 89, respectively, the AIADMK leader claimed.

If the ruling DMK failed to do so, people will see it as “yet another Dravidian model”, he sarcastically said, in an apparent reference to Stalin’s oft-stated model of development taken forward by his government.

Panneerselvam also pointed to the Congress-ruled Rajasthan and LDF-headed Kerala announcing tax cuts following the Centre’s move on Saturday.

  • SC strikes down 10.5 per cent reservation for Vanniyars in Tamil Nadu

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down the 10.5 per cent reservation provided to Vanniyars, a Most Backward Community (MBC) in Tamil Nadu, in government jobs and admission to educational institutions.

A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai upheld the Madras High Court order which had quashed the reservation.

“We are of the opinion that there is no substantial basis for classifying Vanniakula Kshatriyas into one group to be treated differently from the remaining 115 communities within the MBC groups and, therefore, the 2021 Act is in violation of Articles 14, 15 and 16 of the Constitution. Therefore, we uphold the decision of the high court,” the bench said.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly had in February last year passed the then ruling AIADMK-piloted bill providing internal reservation of 10.5 per cent for Vanniyars, with the incumbent DMK government issuing an order in July 2021 for its implementation.

It had split the aggregate 20 per cent reservation for MBCs and denotified communities into three separate categories by regrouping castes and provided a 10 per cent plus sub-quota for Vanniyars, formerly known as Vanniakula Kshatriyas.

  • DMK achieved in 10 months what AIADMK couldn’t in 10 years, says TN CM M K Stalin

    By PTI

CHENNAI: Lashing out at the opposition AIADMK for criticising his party on not giving effect to his poll assurances, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin on Wednesday said the DMK government achieved in a short span of 10 months what the AIADMK failed to do during 10 years of its rule.

Also, he promised to implement the decade-old unfulfilled announcements of the AIADMK regime provided they are beneficial to the people.

Making an announcement under rule 110 in the Assembly on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said immediately after assuming charge on May 7 (last year) he signed five files.

Gradually, government orders (GO) were issued to implement 208 out of 505 poll assurances.

But on the contrary, from 2011 to 2021, the AIADMK regime made 537 announcements under Assembly rule 110, but had not implemented any of them.

“Their announcements still remain on paper and were made only for the sake of publicity,” Stalin said.

While the government under him was delivering on its promises, the opposition party keeps on asking questions.

“It’s like asking about the tenth standard marks of a 10-month-old baby. Let me tell you, this child will not only score high grades in the tenth standard but also win a medal in the graduation,” the Chief Minister said amid thumping of treasury benches.

Listing out the announcements of the AIADMK, he said the party neither kept the promises it made in 2011 and 2016 Assembly elections nor fulfilled the announcements made when it was in power.

“You (AIADMK government) had announced to conduct the global investors meet (GIM) once every two years but it was held only once in the last five years,” Stalin said.

The announcements on establishing a satellite city in suburban Thirumalisai, an integrated satellite city near Madurai airport, free cell phones to ration cardholders, free Wi-Fi in public places and Rs 500 coupon to ration cardholders to buy clothes for Pongal at Co-optex and other promises made by the AIADMK were not fulfilled.

Even the announcement on constructing a flyover between Meenambakkam and Chengalpattu, coastal road project from Chennai to Kanyakumari, Aero Park, Mobile e-Governance programme and Monorail project, to name a few, never took off.

The AIADMK regime made a total of 507 promises, including 186 in its 2011 election manifesto and 321 in its 2016 election manifesto, and despite being at the helm for 10 years, the party passed orders to implement only 269.

He said orders were not issued for 20 announcements made for an outlay of Rs 9,741 crore. “As I have already mentioned, during the last 10 months, the DMK government made 208 announcements out of 505 poll promises and GO were issued to implement 171 of them,” he said.

Recalling DMK founder and former Chief Minister C N Annadurai’s quote “matran thottathu malligaikkum manam undu” (even the jasmine in neighbour’s garden have fragrance), Stalin assured to implement the announcements of the AIADMK regime if they were beneficial to the people.

  • Cash, jewels, crypto currency investment papers seized during raid on ex-Minister

    By PTI

COIMBATORE: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Tuesday said the agency has seized 11.152 kg of gold ornaments 118.506 kg of silver, incriminating documents, unaccounted cash of over 84 lakh, mobile phones, locker keys of several banks and computer hard discs during the raid conducted on the premises of former minister S P Velumani and of his 12 associates in six districts of Tamil Nadu and in Kerala.

Investment documents pertaining to crypto currencies to the tune of Rs 34 lakh were also detected, a press release from the DVAC said here.

Based on information that Velumani had accumulated assets disproportionate to his known source of income of over Rs 58.23 crore during 2016-2021 with the help of the 12, a case was registered and subsequently raids were carried out, said the release.

Further investigations are on, the release said. This is the second raid against the former minister, who belongs to the AIADMK, in the last eight months.

The DVAC officials said they searched also the houses of AIADMK MLA K R Jayaaman here and of former MLA Shanmugam near here. Velumani was present on his property during the raid, they said.

  • Former AIADMK Minister acquired properties in the name of partnership firms, says FIR

    By PTI
CHENNAI: M R Vijayabhaskar, former AIADMK Minister, acquired properties in the name of two partnership firms, a First Information Report lodged against him by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption has said.

Vijayabhaskar, an AIADMK strongman hailing from Karur region in Tamil Nadu became a Minister for the first time in May 2016 when late J Jayalalithaa retained power that year following a win in Assembly polls.

The former Minister, who now faces a disproportionate assets case, continued to hold his transport department portfolio till the AIADMK lost power in the recently held Assembly polls and he too was defeated. Jayalalithaa died in December 2016.

After registering the case against him, vigilance officials conducted searches days ago in several premises connected to him and details of the FIR have now emerged.

According to the FIR, during the 2016-21 check period when Vijayabhaskar held office, he “was in possession of pecuniary resources and properties” in his name and that of his wife to the tune of Rs 2.68 crore, disproportionate to his known sources of income.

“The extent of disproportion is 55 per cent of the total income during the said check period.” The FIR alleged it is reliably learnt that the former Minister acquired eight properties in the name of two partnership firms in which he and his wife are partners, “which clearly raised reasonable suspicion that the said assets are acquired by Vijayabhaskar in the name of the partnership firms in which he is a partner.”

Vijayabhaskar’s brother, Sekar, “by representing” the two partnership firms for acquiring the properties and holding them in the name of these firms “aided and abetted” the former Minister, according to the FIR.

The former Minister’s wife and brother are the two other accused persons in the disproportionate assets case, the first after DMK assumed office in May this year.

On Thursday, vigilance officials carried out searches in about 20 locations related to Vijayabhaskar in connection with this case.

The AIADMK had dubbed the DVAC action as “political vendetta” and said the DMK government, “which came to power on false promises”, was not focussing on public welfare, but on “vindictive action,” against the opposition.

The main opposition party had also alleged that the DMK government had taken up the ‘cheap political weapon’ of filing false cases against AIADMK workers.

  • Crucial assembly election results on Sunday in shadow of raging COVID pandemic

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Counting of votes will be held on Sunday in the high-stakes Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry assembly elections, overshadowed by the raging COVID pandemic, as the BJP seeks to consolidate its hold over more states and the Congress along with its allies attempts to regain lost turf.

There will be 2,364 counting halls as compared to 1,002 halls in 2016 in 822 assemble constituencies, a more than 200 percent increase, in view of the COVID guidelines, according to the Election Commission which had drawn flak from the courts over the conduct of polls during the pandemic.

At least 15 rounds of sanitisation will be carried out at each polling centre, besides social distancing and other precautions, including a ban on gatherings, will be strictly followed, officials said.

They said counting of votes will begin at 8 AM and continue late into the night.

As many as 1,100 counting observers will watch the process and candidates and agents will have to produce a negative COVID test report or double dose of vaccination certificate to get an entry.

Exit polls have forecast a tight contest between the incumbent Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the crucial West Bengal assembly polls and put the ruling saffron combine ahead in Assam while projecting that the Left alliance will retain Kerala, a feat unseen in four decades.

For the Congress, the exit polls predicted that it may fall short in Assam and Kerala and lose in Puducherry to the opposition alliance of AINRC-BJP-AIADMK.

The only good news for the Congress was from Tamil Nadu, where the exit polls predicted that the DMK-led opposition alliance, of which it is a part, will trounce the AIADMK-BJP coalition.

The poll results in the four states and the UT are also likely to reflect how the handling of the COVID pandemic has played on the voters’ mind.

Polling was held in eight phases in West Bengal between March 27 and April 29, in Assam in three stages on March 27, April 1 and 6, while votes were cast in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry in a single phase on April 6, when the COVID surge had begun in many of the states.

Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are among the 11 states that account for 78.22 per cent of the total active cases, according to the Health ministry.

A three-tier security arrangement is in place in West Bengal’s 108 counting centres and at least 292 observers have been appointed and 256 companies of central forces deployed across 23 districts of the state that voted in a gruelling election marred by violence and vicious personal attacks.

The result will decide whether Mamata Banerjee, who has been in power for 10 years and is arguably fighting the toughest poll of her political career, has been able to thwart the challenge by the battle-hardened election army of the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP, which had just three seats in the 294-member Assembly in the 2016 Assembly polls and went to win 18 out of 42 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, had pulled out all stops in the state in a determined bid to oust Banerjee, a vocal critic of Prime Minister Modi, and add another state to its tally of 17.

The Left-Congress alliance is third main contestant in the state.

In Tamil Nadu, both Dravidian parties — AIADMK and DMK — went into the election without their stalwarts, J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam will cement their position as successors of Jayalalithaa if the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham (AIADMK) retains power though it faces an uphill task especially after the rout in the 2019 Lok Sabha election when the DMK-led alliance won 38 out of 39 seats.

The AIADMK had scored successive wins in 2011 and in 2016, when Jayalalithaa bucked the anti-incumbency trend — the first by anyone in nearly three decades in the state.

After a narrow defeat in the last assembly election where several exit polls had predicted his party’s win, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M K Stalin spearheaded a determined election campaign this time and vigorously toured the state to take on the ruling AIADMK.

AIADMK ally BJP, which had not won any seat in the last polls, is contesting in 20 constituencies.

Another AIADMK ally PMK is contesting from 23 constituencies.

The Congress, an ally of the DMK, is in the fray in 25 Assembly segments.

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam-led combine is also in the fray.

There are 75 counting centres across the state and all arrangements are in place to smoothly conduct the exercise, which would be monitored by observers, authorities said.

In Kerala, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) is seeking to break the state’s four-decade-old trend of swinging between the communists and the Congress-led United Democratic Front.

As many as 957 candidates, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, 11 of his Cabinet colleagues, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy, ‘Metroman’ E Sreedharan, former Union Minister K J Alphons and BJP State president K Surendran, among others, were in fray in the election to the 140 seats.

The BJP,which had won one seat in 2016, is confident of garnering more seats this time The poll is significant for Kerala Congress (M) chief Jose K Mani who recently snapped decades-long ties with the UDF and joined hands with the Left front.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had camped in the state for several days and taken part in dozens of corner meetings and rallies, with the party hoping that the state will herald a turn in its electoral fortunes after a series of disappointments in recent years.

In Assam, the ruling BJP is facing a challenge from ‘Mahajoth’ or ‘Grand Alliance’ comprising the Congress, AIUDF, Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF), CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML) Liberation, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM).

The BJP has an alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP), The saffron party had scripted history by winning the traditionally Congress-dominated state in 2016, after remaining on the fringes.

In Puducherry, the AINRC-led NDA and the Congress-led Secular Democratic alliance are in a contest.

While AINRC fielded candidates in 16 of the total 30 constituencies the BJP is contesting nine seats while the AIADMK is contesting five seats.

The Congress-led government in the Union Territory had collapsed just before the elections.

Counting will also be held in four Lok Sabha seats and 13 assembly seats across 13 states where bypolls were held.

The EC has banned victory roadshows and vehicle rallies.

India’s daily coronavirus tally crossed the grim milestone of four lakh on Saturday, while the death toll rose to 2,11,853 with 3,523 fresh fatalities.

The infection tally rose to 1,91,64,969 with 4,01,993 new cases, while the active cases crossed the 32-lakh mark.

As for Kerala, the LDF is all set to retain power with the poll of polls predicting 84 to LDF, 54 to UDF and 2 to the BJP. Today’s Chanakya predicted 70 seats for the saffron alliance and 56 for the Congress-led opposition.

However, As Per the Post Poll Survey conducted by ‘Peoples Pulse’, BJP would get 43-48 seats and the Congress seems to attempt to be closing in with 38-43 seats.

  • AIADMK, DMK, Tamil Nadu’s key contenders for power leave fate to people

    By PTI
CHENNAI: After fierce electioneering over a span of about four months, with a resurgent DMK eyeing capturing power and a determined AIADMK straining every nerve to retain power for the second time, Tamil Nadu is all set for the Assembly polls on Tuesday.

The most intense in its electoral history and the first polls in the absence of stalwarts, AIADMK’s J Jayalalithaa and DMK’s M Karunanidhi, Chief Minister K Palaniswami, who is seeking a third successive win from Edappadi segment in his home district of Salem, steered his party’s hectic campaign.

With women (3,19,39,112) outnumbering men (3,09,23,651), the 6.28 crore voters, which includes 7,192 third gender people, would decide the fortunes of 3,998 candidates.

As many as 13 candidates, including BJP’s Pon Radhakrishnan and Vijay Vasanth of Congress are in the fray for the bypoll to the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat.

Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, who too embarked on an aggressive campaign, is contesting again from his native Theni district’s Bodinayakanur constituency, where he emerged victorious in the 2011 and 2016 polls.

The AIADMK leadership that began the campaign in December last, latched on to government’s ‘achievements’ like 7.5 per cent quota for government school students in medical admissions, successful COVID-19 management and poll promises like Rs 1,500 monthly assistance to families.

The DMK’s poll plank was corruption charges against the government and 500 plus poll promises, including Rs 4,000 relief to COVID-19 hit rice ration card holders and legislation to earmark 75 per cent of jobs for locals.

DMK chief M K Stalin, who spearheaded several campaign programmes against the ruling party, including the ‘We Reject AIADMK’ in December last and ‘people’s’ grama sabhas, vigorously toured the state to take on the ruling AIADMK.

He is seeking reelection for the straight third term from Kolathur segment here.

His son and party youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin is debuting from Chepauk- Triplicance constituency.

For the first time, Makkal Needhi Maiam, founded in 2018 and led by actor-politician Kamal Haasan, is trying its luck in Assembly polls.

AIADMK’s ally, BJP which is contesting in 20 constituencies, has made a serious bid to make a mark in the Assembly polls.

Currently, the BJP has no MLAs in the Assembly.

The saffron party conducted a ‘Vel’ yatra last year and claimed in its campaign that it had championed the cause of protecting the people’s sentiments.

Its yatra prompted DMK chief Stalin to even hold a ‘Vel’.

Several senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national chief J P Nadda were among those who campaigned.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi toured Tamil Nadu with zest and covered many regions to woo voters, targeting the BJP for not ‘respecting’ Tamil culture and its ally, the AIADMK leadership, for ‘bowing’ before the Centre.

The Congress, an ally of the DMK, is in the fray in 25 Assembly segments.

Haasan is trying his luck from Coimbatore South, while BJP’s state unit president L Murugan and the saffron party’s Kushbhu Sundar are contesting from Dharapuram and Thousand Lights constituencies respectively.

Another AIADMK ally PMK is contesting from 23 constituencies and is pinning its hopes on measures like the 10.5 per cent internal reservation for Vanniyars, a Most Backward Community.

AIADMK’s rival Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, led by TTV Dhinakaran (contesting from Kovilpatti) and Nam Tamizhar Katchi of Seeman (Tiruvotriyur) made a determined effort to woo voters.

DMDK, which walked out of the AIADMK alliance over not being alloted the number of seats it sought, is fighting the polls in alliance with AMMK.

The state has 88,937 polling stations 1,29,165 ballot units, 91,180 control units (which comprise the Electronic Voting Machine) and an equal number of VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) units.

As many as 4,17,521 polling personnel are on duty and over 1.50 lakh security personnel, including those from state police, Central Armed Police Force, and home guards have been deployed.

There are 10,813 vulnerable polling stations and 537 critical and webcasting is all set to be done from ’50 per cent’ of the polling stations.

A total of Rs 428.46 crore worth seizures have been made in the run up to the polls, which includes a cash component of Rs 225.52 crore.

There are 234 Assembly constituencies which goes for a single phase polls on Tuesday.

AIADMK is in the fray in 191 segments (including allies who are contesting on AIADMK’s two-leaves symbol) and DMK is fighting from 188 constituencies (including poll partners who are contesting on DMK’s Rising Sun symbol).

The DMK was in power during 2006-11.

The AIADMK, then led by late Jayalalithaa, won the 2011 polls hands down and also went on to retain power in 2016.
