Gagan Narang’s marksmanship redefined Indian shooting on the international stage. His bronze at the 2012 London Olympics in 10m air rifle wasn’t just a medal; it was India’s first in that event, scored with a flawless 701.1. This achievement capped a career filled with records and accolades.
Hailing from a Punjabi family in Haryana’s Panipat district, Narang was born in Chennai on May 6, 1983, but raised in Hyderabad. A BCA graduate from Osmania University, he took up shooting in 1997 courtesy of an air pistol from his father. What started as a hobby soon became a national obsession.
His international debut was explosive: gold in 10m air rifle at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games. By 2006, he dominated with World Cup gold and four Commonwealth Games golds. In 2008, his ISSF World Cup final performance in Granada, Spain, etched history—103.5 in the finals for a universe record total of 703.5.
Narang peaked at home during the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, bagging four golds, and silver at the Asian Games that year. Glasgow 2014 added silver and bronze in 50m rifle events. Off the range, honors poured in: Khel Ratna in 2010, Padma Shri in 2011, and a ceremonial role at the 2012 Indian Grand Prix.
Narang’s story is one of precision under pressure. He not only elevated shooting in India but also mentored future talents, ensuring the sport’s growth. His Olympic bronze remains a beacon for aspiring athletes dreaming of podium finishes.
