Tension boiled over into chaos in Jhalawar’s Paliyakhedi village on Sunday morning, as a dispute over a girl’s elopement sparked a savage group brawl and arson attack. Four people were hospitalized after the melee that saw a shop gutted by flames.

The flashpoint: a young man from Harishpur whisked away a girl from Kandal Khedi, prompting her relatives to file a police report. A mediation panchayat convened with village elders, but talks collapsed, leading the girl’s kin to storm the boy’s family home in Paliyakhedi.

Assailants ransacked the property, beat residents with sticks and stones, and ignited a fire in an adjacent shop. Valuable goods inside were completely destroyed before fire services intervened.

Among the wounded were Leelabai, Padma, Ishwar, and Sabba, all admitted to Jhalawar District Hospital. Ishwar, who was present as a visitor, shared his ordeal: ‘The fight broke out suddenly during our visit. They attacked me while I tried to stop it.’ Padma echoed the horror, detailing the brutal assault by outsiders.

Bhavani Mandi police acted promptly, controlling the crowd and securing the area with additional deployments. The situation is now stable, but the incident has cast a shadow over the villages involved.

Such conflicts highlight ongoing challenges in rural India, where elopements can ignite feuds rooted in family honor. Law enforcement urges community leaders to promote dialogue over violence, as probes continue into the attackers’ actions.
