Two Jain Nuns Killed in Rewa Accident, Protests Planned Nationwide

A devastating collision in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, has left the Jain community in mourning after two nuns lost their lives and another was gravely wounded. The accident took place on May 20 when a speeding vehicle struck three nuns participating in a religious walk near the collectorate in the Civil Lines locality. Srutamati Mata, a disciple of Acharya Shri Vidhyasagar Ji Maharaj, died on the spot. The other two nuns, Upasamiti Mata and Arika Mata, were rushed to hospital where one later passed away despite intensive care. The driver fled but was apprehended after an extensive manhunt spanning nearly 270 kilometers. Authorities have registered a case against the accused under charges of reckless driving and leaving the scene of the accident. Video evidence suggests the car deliberately turned toward the nuns, raising questions within the community about whether the incident was purely accidental. Jain groups have called for coordinated peaceful demonstrations on May 25 across several cities to demand justice and stronger safety protocols for monks and nuns who travel barefoot. Leaders emphasize maintaining peace while pressing for accountability. Messages of restraint and faith have come from prominent saints, and political figures including Rajya Sabha MP Naveen Jain have voiced their support. The state government has promised swift legal action. The incident has once again drawn attention to the vulnerability of Jain ascetics on public roads and the broader issue of road safety in the region.
