As the monsoon looms over Northeast India, the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) has accelerated its preparations to keep trains running safely through June to September’s deluge. Officials in Guwahati announced a multi-pronged action plan Tuesday, targeting the region’s vulnerability to torrential rains, landslides, and flooding.

In a proactive move, NFR has stationed permanent guards at high-risk track sections. These watch points ensure continuous monitoring, with immediate alerts triggering rapid interventions. Chief PRO Kapinjol Kishore Sharma noted that embankments have been strengthened, drainage overhauled, and water flow paths cleared to fortify vulnerable zones.

Water level sensors now dot critical hilly areas, feeding live data for preemptive action. Relief stockpiles—stones, sandbags, wire nets—are strategically placed for quick access during crises. ‘Emergency on Wheels’ units, complete with skilled crews and tools, are on standby.

Division-wise rapid response squads stand trained to tackle washouts and submersion, prioritizing quick restoration of passenger and goods services. Ample materials are stockpiled for 2026 monsoons: Lumding leads with massive boulder and cement reserves, followed by robust inventories in Tinsukia, Rangiya, Alipurduar, and Katihar.

Every division is equipped with heavy-duty rescue gear like cranes and jacks. Seamless ties with weather authorities deliver instant forecasts to control centers, guiding train scheduling and deployments.

This year’s intensified efforts address past disruptions that isolated Northeast states via rail. Travelers should monitor official updates and heed advisories. NFR’s holistic approach promises resilient operations, protecting lives and logistics amid nature’s wrath.
