NDA Hails SC Order Backing Election Roll Revision

In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has affirmed the legality of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists ordered by the Election Commission. The bench observed that the exercise is essential for maintaining the sanctity of elections and falls squarely within the Commission’s mandate. Reacting to the verdict, NDA leaders across states expressed satisfaction. BJP’s Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters that SIR is a continuous administrative process aimed at ensuring only eligible citizens remain on the rolls. He accused sections of the opposition of creating unnecessary confusion and said the judiciary has repeatedly cautioned such elements. Samajwadi Party-turned-BJP leader Om Prakash Rajbhar welcomed the judgment, stating that the Election Commission is an independent constitutional body whose powers have now been explicitly upheld. He alleged that opposition parties are upset because the revision disrupts their alleged practice of using fake and duplicate votes, including those of deceased persons. Uttar Pradesh Minister Danish Azad Ansari said the revision process is a corrective step that will ultimately enhance the beauty of the Constitution by guaranteeing free and fair elections. He urged all stakeholders to respect the Supreme Court’s decision rather than politicize an administrative exercise. Bihar Minister Deepak Prakash emphasized that voter-list revision is a routine function performed before every major election. He said opposition attempts to portray SIR as an extraordinary or targeted move have not resonated with voters in Bihar, where assembly elections are due soon.
