In a moment blending spirituality and politics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the 300-year-old Thanthania Kali Temple during his roadshow in Kolkata on Sunday, invoking blessings for the ongoing West Bengal election campaign.

The Prime Minister’s arrival electrified the streets, with supporters lining the route in anticipation. His planned detour to the historic temple – one of Kolkata’s most venerated Kali sites – highlighted his deep respect for Bengal’s traditions.

Founded in 1703, before Kolkata’s colonial boom, the temple honors Maa Siddheshwari, a manifestation of Kali considered eternally vigilant. PM Modi, garland in hand, paid homage inside before waving to the crowds and continuing the roadshow.

Post-visit, he posted on X: ‘Prayed at Thanthania Kalibari in Kolkata today. Tied to Bengali heritage and Sri Ramakrishna’s legacy, who worshipped here often. Prayed for India’s prosperity and well-being.’

Ramakrishna’s connection elevates the shrine’s status. The saint’s devotional verse adorns its walls, echoing his profound bond with the deity. This temple stands apart for its meat-based offerings, initiated by Ramakrishna with prawn-coconut prasad for ailing Keshab Chandra Sen’s swift recovery.

The custom persists, rooted in tales of divine intervention. When Ramakrishna fell ill, disciples offered similar prasad here, crediting Maa Siddheshwari for his healing. Today, PM Modi’s pilgrimage reinforces the temple’s living legacy amid Bengal’s charged political atmosphere, where faith often intersects with public life.
