In a bold assertion amid heated parliamentary proceedings, Samajwadi Party parliamentarian Ikra Hasan has called on Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to safeguard the opposition’s right to speak. ‘The Speaker is the protector of the House, and that protection should extend to us too,’ Hasan stated firmly.
Detailing repeated instances of suppression, she noted how the Leader of Opposition is constantly interrupted. During an interview in New Delhi, Hasan stressed the importance of the position: ‘It’s called the shadow Prime Minister for a reason. Robust question-answer sessions are democracy’s hallmark, and the Speaker must ensure they happen.’
The MP demanded fair opportunities for opposition debates, particularly criticizing the budget session where key discussions were stifled. ‘The government avoids scrutiny because their misdeeds would surface,’ she charged. ‘Budget discussions are essential post-presentation, but we’re denied our turn. This feels like an assault on democracy.’
Hasan didn’t spare the Uttar Pradesh administration, accusing it of shielding BJP affiliates with undue privileges and undermining law enforcement. ‘The public sees through this farce,’ she affirmed. ‘UP voters will deliver their verdict in 2027.’
Her comments come at a critical juncture, amplifying opposition frustrations and spotlighting the need for impartial stewardship in India’s lower house.
