Responding swiftly to disturbing reports from Jamia Nagar in Delhi, the National Commission for Women has initiated suo motu proceedings in the alleged abduction, gangrape, and forced conversion of a Dalit woman. The watchdog has sought an action taken report from Delhi Police within seven days, underscoring the gravity of the allegations. The Commission has asked for complete details on FIR registration, sections applied under relevant laws including the SC/ST Act, arrests made, forensic and medical examinations conducted, the victim’s statement before a magistrate, and steps taken for her protection, confidentiality, and rehabilitation. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Police Commissioner emphasizing that cases involving sexual violence, caste discrimination, and religious coercion require immediate, fair, and thorough investigation. The body condemned the incident in the strongest terms and called for exemplary punishment for the guilty. Separately, the Commission has taken note of a shocking alleged acid attack on a woman in Pune, directing Maharashtra Police to act promptly and ensure the victim receives necessary medical and legal support.
