In a landmark announcement from Copenhagen, the WHO Europe Regional Office has elevated Denmark’s Centre for Health and Infectious Diseases Research (CHIP) to the status of a WHO Collaborating Centre. This move is set to supercharge regional campaigns against HIV, viral hepatitis, TB, and sexually transmitted infections.

Housed within Rigshospitalet and the University of Copenhagen, CHIP will collaborate with WHO/Europe and member countries to operationalize scientific discoveries. The centre’s mandate includes fortifying public health infrastructures and speeding up the achievement of health objectives throughout the region.

The four-year collaboration zeroes in on HIV, co-infections of hepatitis and TB, while maintaining momentum on STIs. Key activities encompass training healthcare professionals, broadening diagnostic access, advancing research into program implementation, and refining biomedical prevention at national levels.

Ivo Perelts, WHO/Europe’s Director for Health Security and Regional Emergencies, highlighted the role of these centres: ‘They amplify WHO’s technical prowess, deliver specialized knowledge, and build robust institutional frameworks in nations and areas.’

Understanding the diseases at stake is crucial. HIV targets immune cells, potentially leading to AIDS if untreated, but ART offers a path to prolonged wellness. Hepatitis inflames the liver via viral, alcoholic, toxic, or autoimmune triggers, manifesting in jaundice, exhaustion, pain, and urine discoloration—or silently in many instances.

TB, a highly contagious bacterial illness mainly hitting the lungs, brings chronic cough, thoracic discomfort, feverish spells, fatigue, and nocturnal sweats. Successful treatment hinges on completing antibiotic regimens to avert resistance.

As Europe grapples with these epidemics, CHIP’s new role as a WHO Collaborating Centre heralds innovative solutions, enhanced expertise, and a unified push toward eradication.
