New Delhi’s agricultural policy took a farmer-friendly turn today as Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan approved Rs 4,886.46 crore for enhanced procurement of sunflower and chickpeas from Karnataka and Maharashtra. Announced on Tuesday, this package targets Rabi seasons to deliver MSP benefits directly to producers.

Karnataka’s sunflower farmers stand to gain significantly with approval for buying 9,023 metric tons in the 2026 Rabi season. Priced at MSP, the deal totals more than Rs 69.66 crore, offering a buffer against fluctuating mandi rates that often leave growers shortchanged.

This approval is more than procedural—it’s a safeguard. Farmers frequently face exploitative markets, selling at a loss. MSP enforcement here promises fair play, boosting morale and encouraging crop diversification into high-value oilseeds.

In parallel, Maharashtra sees a blockbuster expansion for chickpeas. The procurement cap for 2025-26 Rabi has surged to 8,19,882 metric tons, with an MSP outlay over Rs 4,816.80 crore. This mammoth scale reflects the government’s resolve to honor its procurement pledges.

Adding practicality, chickpea buying deadlines in the state now stretch to May 29, a 30-day extension. Late arrivals at procurement centers won’t miss out, ensuring broader access to guaranteed prices and averting distress sales.
