In a gesture of goodwill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated BNP leader Tarique Rahman on his party’s dominant showing in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections. Posting on social media platform X, Modi described the outcome as a testament to the Bangladeshi public’s faith in Rahman’s vision.
‘Heartiest congratulations to Tarique Rahman for BNP’s big win in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections. This shows the people’s confidence in your leadership,’ Modi stated. He pledged India’s continued solidarity with a Bangladesh committed to democratic values, progress, and inclusivity.
Modi also looked forward to working together to bolster multifaceted relations and mutual development objectives. BNP is leading on 198 seats, Jamaat-e-Islami on 62, and NCP on 2, with results still pouring in according to Dhaka Tribune reports.
Rahman, returning hero from 17 years in exile, clinched the Dhaka-17 seat. His homecoming last December, just before his mother Khaleda Zia’s death, galvanized supporters. The 60-year-old, son of two former premiers, hit the campaign trail hard, focusing on security, infrastructure revival, and health reforms.
Post-victory, he called for nationwide special supplications post-Jumu’ah prayers over street celebrations. With 299 of 300 seats contested, this poll underscores BNP’s resurgence against the backdrop of Sheikh Hasina’s ouster. India’s support could pave the way for renewed regional stability and cooperation.
