New Delhi’s fisheries authorities have approved a game-changing Rs 199.24 crore project on Tuesday to build a state-of-the-art smart fishing harbor in Mayabunder, under the Andaman and Nicobar administration. Fully funded by the central government through PMMSY, this integrated facility marks a significant step forward in modernizing India’s coastal infrastructure.
Designed in line with the Blue Ports mission, the harbor will incorporate IoT-driven tech for safe fish landings and vessel berthing. It emphasizes sustainable practices, expanded handling capabilities, superior safety measures, green energy solutions, and blockchain-like digital tracking to curb IUU fishing.
Expectations are high for job creation and income upliftment among fishing communities. The harbor will accommodate 430 boats securely and manage 9,900 tons of annual fish landings, injecting vitality into the local economy and fisheries sector at large.
This island chain’s 600,000 sq km EEZ teems with marine wealth, particularly tuna stocks totaling 60,000 MT—highlighted by 24,000 MT yellowfin and 2,000 MT skipjack varieties. Such endowments position Andaman as a fisheries powerhouse.
Nationally, the sector’s growth is remarkable: fish output has doubled-plus from 9.6 million MT a decade ago to 19.775 million MT by 2024-25. Export values have mirrored this, hitting Rs 62,408 crore for diverse products reaching 130 global markets. The new harbor promises to elevate these achievements, fostering resilient livelihoods and environmental stewardship.
