Raipur ;Raigad Center of Agricultural University honored as India’s best spice research center

The Spice Research Center of Agricultural College and Research Center, Raigad, operated under Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, has been awarded as the Best Spice Research Center of India for the year 2019-20. Raigad Center has been given this honor for the development, crop improvement, research and expansion of new varieties of spice crops like turmeric, ginger, coriander, fenugreek, celery etc. This center is also organizing demonstrations of various varieties of spice crops in their fields for the upliftment of tribal farmers of the state. The award was conferred to the center on the occasion of the 31st annual workshop of All India Integrated Research Project ‘Masala’. It is worth noting that the Integrated Spice Research Center was established in the year 1996 for spice research at the Agricultural College and Research Center, Raigad. Since then, the All India Integrated Research Project for spice research is being conducted through this center. The scientists of the project are doing research work on crop improvement and disease resistance on the major spice crops of the state like turmeric, ginger, coriander, fenugreek, celery and nigella. Several species of different crops have been contributed by All India Coordinated Research Trials in Turmeric, Ginger, Ami Ginger, Fenugreek and Nigella by the Spice Research Center of Agricultural College and Research Center, Raigad. Two varieties of coriander developed by the Center, CG coriander-1 for Chhattisgarh state and CG Shri Chandrahasini Dhaniya-2 for Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, It has been released and notified in the year 2019 for the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. At present, two new varieties of turmeric developed by the center are CG. Turmeric-1 and CG Turmeric-2 has been identified for release by the Chhattisgarh State Variety Seed Subcommittee. CVRC proposes to notify this new variety for the states. Is under consideration before New Delhi. Chhattisgarh State Variety Seed Subcommittee has introduced the state’s first celery variety CG for the state. Celery-1 has also been identified. Project scientist Dr. A.K. Singh and Dr. Srikant Savargaonkar have developed a new technique called ‘rhizome multiplication crop production and conservation’ for the production of turmeric and ginger which will prove beneficial for the farmers. Turmeric-2 has been identified for release by the Chhattisgarh State Variety Seed Subcommittee. CVRC proposes to notify this new variety for the states. Is under consideration before New Delhi. Chhattisgarh State Variety Seed Subcommittee has introduced the state’s first celery variety CG for the state. Celery-1 has also been identified. Project scientist Dr. A.K. Singh and Dr. Srikant Savargaonkar have developed a new technique called ‘rhizome multiplication crop production and conservation’ for the production of turmeric and ginger which will prove beneficial for the farmers.
