The dynamic duo of Swanand Kirkire and Sudhir Mishra is back, this time for the gripping series ‘Summer of 77’, set against India’s dark Emergency years from 1975 to 1977. Kirkire, a powerhouse in lyrics and music, has penned and composed six songs for the eight-episode political saga, lending his voice to three.
Reflecting on their partnership, Kirkire praised Mishra’s directorial prowess. ‘He infuses stories with profound sincerity,’ Kirkire shared. ‘Working under his guidance sharpens your craft because he grasps nuances with emotional precision.’
This isn’t their first rodeo. Hits like ‘Bawra Mann’ from ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ and tracks from ‘Khoja Khoja Chand’ highlight their track record. Now on project number five, Kirkire values Mishra’s commitment to music. ‘In today’s films, songs can seem obligatory, but Sudhir makes them integral to the plot, fueling fresh creativity.’
The series captures the zeitgeist of 1970s youth – their defiance, aspirations, and quest for self amid oppression. Kirkire, fresh from ‘Bandwale’, saw this as the perfect canvas. ‘Recreating that period’s essence demanded authenticity. Music was rebellion’s voice then, through poems and tunes that echoed the people’s unrest.’
As ‘Summer of 77’ gears up for release, it promises a nostalgic yet hard-hitting portrayal, elevated by Kirkire’s melodies that bridge past and present.
