In a major setback for Congress in Assam’s Assembly elections, state chief Gaurav Gogoi is lagging in Jorhat constituency. BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami has taken a clear lead after five rounds of vote counting today.

Current figures reveal Goswami with 23,339 votes against Gogoi’s 15,326, a gap of over 8,000 votes that’s only growing. This early reverse has rattled Congress supporters, even as leaders express confidence in a potential comeback.

Statewide, the BJP-led alliance is powering ahead on 98 seats in the initial trends, dwarfing the opposition’s 25-seat lead. Counting is underway amid heightened security, with results expected to clarify by evening.

Polling on April 9 drew 85.96% participation from 2.5 crore voters, featuring 722 candidates including 59 women. Congress led with 99 nominees, BJP 90, AIUDF 30, AGP 26, BPF 11, and numerous others like AAP (18), TMC (22), and 258 independents.

Raijor Dal fielded 13, AEP 10, CPI(M) 3, and APHLC 2 candidates. These diverse contests highlight Assam’s vibrant political scene. As numbers pour in, the NDA’s dominance suggests a likely return to power, reshaping regional dynamics.
