Hyderabad’s political circles buzzed on Sunday as Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla approved the nomination of state minister Mohammad Azharuddin and Professor M. Kodandaram to the Telangana Legislative Council via the Governor’s quota. This step replaces outgoing members D. Rajeshwar Rao and Farooq Hussain, whose tenures ended last year.

Pending legal appeals could still impact the finality, per the official notification. For Azharuddin, the timing couldn’t be more pressing. Sworn in as a minister last October, he faces a constitutional deadline of April 30 to gain legislative membership or vacate his post.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s proactive outreach paid off. His April 19 meeting with the Governor followed the cabinet’s August 2023 recommendation. Reddy recently highlighted the Supreme Court’s neutral stance, paving the way for these approvals.

Flashback to the turbulence: BRS leaders Dasoju Sravan and Kurra Satyanarayana challenged similar nominations in court, leading to a temporary stay on Kodandaram and Aamir Ali Khan’s appointments. They eventually took oath in 2024 after revised cabinet proposals, with the apex court emphasizing adherence to interim orders.

Professor Kodandaram, known for spearheading the Telangana statehood movement, brings a legacy of grassroots activism. Azharuddin, the cricketing icon turned Congressman, injects star power into the legislative fray.

This development bolsters the Congress government’s stability in the face of opposition scrutiny. With appeals lingering, the coming weeks will test the resilience of these strategic appointments in Telangana’s evolving political theater.
