Hormuz Strait Blockade: UN Predicts Mass Hunger Crisis Ahead

Global alarm bells are ringing as the UN cautions that a Strait of Hormuz shutdown could trigger widespread starvation. UNOPS Executive Director George Moreira da Silva warns of dire consequences for agriculture without timely fertilizer deliveries.

Posting on X with statistics and an Al Jazeera interview clip, UNOPS revealed that 45 million individuals could slip into hunger if supplies falter. The strait’s closure disrupts shipments from Gulf nations, hitting import-dependent regions like East Africa hardest.

Fertilizer markets are in turmoil: urea up 65%, ammonia 40%. Skyrocketing raw material costs will inflate production expenses, curb yields, and spike food prices globally. ‘The impact won’t be short-term; it will linger for years,’ da Silva affirmed.

This sowing season demands urgent action. Without fertilizers, farmers face devastation, leading to chronic food shortages. The UN’s new task force aims to ensure safe passage for essential cargoes.

Da Silva calls for swift diplomatic efforts to safeguard supply lines. The world cannot afford complacency; a fertilizer crisis today means famine tomorrow, affecting billions indirectly through higher costs and reduced supplies.
