Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, erupted in fury over the killing of party worker Debdeep Chattopadhyay in Asansol, West Bengal. Pointing fingers at Trinamool Congress thugs, he painted a grim picture of the state’s lawlessness.
Posting on X, Gandhi labeled the murder ‘deeply reprehensible’ and stood in solidarity with the bereaved family. ‘West Bengal today has no democracy – only TMC’s goonda raj,’ he charged.
Detailing TMC’s modus operandi, he said, ‘Scaring, beating, and wiping out dissenters after votes – that’s their playbook now. Congress has always shunned violence, honoring our legacy of peace and constitutional values, even in loss.’
His demands were unequivocal: swift arrests, severe penalties, comprehensive family protection, and compensation. Vowing resilience, Gandhi affirmed, ‘This assault on India’s ahimsa heritage won’t break us. Justice is coming.’
According to party sources, Debdeep collaborated with Asansol North candidate Prasenjit Puintandy and was attacked mercilessly by TMC affiliates post-elections, leading to his death.
The Congress West Bengal chapter decried the incident as a stark indicator of crumbling governance and vulnerability for opposition ranks. Polls-fresh violence reveals a cycle of threats and vengeance that’s eroding democratic norms.
Gandhi’s bold stance amplifies calls for intervention, as Bengal grapples with escalating political hostilities ahead of future electoral battles.
