In a devastating turn during a joyous wedding celebration, tragedy struck late night in Bhandup West, Mumbai. Guests attending an event at Matoshree Marriage Hall accidentally fell into a massive pit near a under-construction SRA building by Janata Market, close to Metro Mall.
The mishap occurred at approximately 11:29 PM, prompting a swift multi-agency response. Firefighters, law enforcement, ambulances, and local ward teams descended on the site, conducting a frantic rescue amid the darkness. All 11 affected individuals were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities.
Among them, 25-year-old Bhalchandra Phalle succumbed to his injuries at Fortis Hospital. Shreyas Surve and Harishankar Karwa are still hospitalized but reported stable, while the other eight – Aniket Kadam, Jaydeep Shah, Sanket Juvatkar, Aditya Aher, Aniket Mahesh Patil, Ankit Kumar Rohit, and Jaywant Farsane – have been sent home after initial treatment.
As investigations begin, questions swirl over the construction site’s safety protocols. Why was the deep excavation left unguarded, especially so close to a bustling wedding venue? Angry locals protest the apparent lapse, highlighting recurring risks in Mumbai’s construction boom.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils lurking in urban development zones. Authorities must enforce rigorous barriers and lighting to prevent future heartbreaks, ensuring that nights of festivity don’t end in sorrow.
